Mark 11.9, 10 Collect Shepherd of Israel, hear our prayer as your Son heard the plea of the criminal crucified with him. Gather into Christ s holy reign the broken, the sorrowing, and the sinner, that all may know wholeness, joy, and forgiveness. Amen.

Jesus may have seen his own ministry in the light of this passage, and certainly, the apostolic church recognized him as the promised Messiah. Compare John 10:1-18 to see how much this was so. But there is also a note of both salvation and judgment in the passage: salvation in verses 11-16; judgment in verses These same elements are reflected in the parable in Matthew 25: EPHESIANS 1: This may not be a letter at all, but a prayer, especially its first three chapters. The latter chapters (4-6) are an exhortation to live what we believe. This passage of the prayer rises from personal and particular references to the one, universal purpose of God in Jesus Christ: to bring all creation under the sovereignty of Christ. MATTHEW 25: This parable tells us that the reign of Christ with God will begin with a final judgment. But that reign and God s eternal judgment are going on right now with each decision and action we take. How we live today has eternal consequences. We are to witness to the reign of Christ in the way we serve him in faithfulness, kindness and love to our neighbors in need. If this is our faith, each one of us has to ask ourselves where we stand and how we are to respond to the opportunity God constantly gives us to be among God s people now and forever. 8 READINGS FOR THE REIGN OF CHRIST SUNDAY November 26, 2017 A Reading from the Book of Ezekiel For thus says the Lord God: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited parts of the land. I will feed them with good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord God. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice. Therefore, thus says the Lord God to them: I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. Because you pushed with flank and shoulder, and butted at all the weak animals with your horns until you scattered them far and wide, I will save my flock, and they shall no longer be ravaged; and I will judge between sheep and sheep. I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. Ezekiel 34:11 16, Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church Response: Thanks be to God A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. 9 A Creed for Today We believe in God, Who made the world, loves it, and smiles upon it. We believe in Jesus Christ, who has shown us the human face of God, And a love that refused to be limited. We believe in the Holy Spirit, through whom God reaches us, Surprising, prompting, and questioning us; Who is the life breath of creation? And the source of nurture, humour and hope. We believe God calls us now, Calling us to a life that is absurd by the standards of the world; Calling us to resist evil, including anything that would degrade or destroy another; And to create, protect, love, justice, freedom and peace.
