Anointing of the Sick: Please call the parish office. The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. Did you know that the Sacrament may be repeated if the person becomes sick again? A person should be anointed before surgery when a dangerous illness is the reason for the intervention. Eucharistic Ministry to the Sick and Homebound: If you are unable to attend Mass, please call the parish office so we may assist you in having a visit from one of our ministers or one of our priests. 2 All Souls Catholic Church 2 Scripture Reflection 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time "You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come." The only thing we really know about when Jesus will come again is that we won't be expecting it. As Jesus instructs us today, the best plan of action is thus to be prepared at all times. We need to be ready and waiting to meet Jesus so that when he does return, it won't catch us off guard. A little thought experiment might be helpful here. Let's imagine that the doorbell rings this evening after dinner. We open the door and find Jesus standing there. He asks to come in. Are we ready for this honored guest? What will he find when he steps in unannounced? Is everyone at peace around the house? Is everyone speaking with love and acting with generosity? Is there anything in our home that, in his presence, we might be ashamed of--books, shows, movies, or music that aren't appropriate? Pictures, Facebook posts, or a record of Internet history that we hope he won't discover? Now, imagine that he came unannounced into our HEARTS this evening. What would he find there? Are our hearts ready to welcome Jesus? In truth, we need not wait for the second coming to have Jesus in our hearts. He wants to live there already today! So regardless of the timing of the second coming of Christ, we would do well to follow the traditional spiritual practice of a daily examination of conscience to see where we are doing well and where we need to make changes. Taking such a deliberate spiritual inventory is an excellent way to help us be ready for Jesus like those servants "who await their master's return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks." Veremos en lo que Jesús enfatiza en diferentes ocasiones y es la imagen del tesoro para hablar del Reino. El tesoro es deseado, es algo así como sacarnos la lotería cada semana que la rifan, o que nos llegue una herencia no esperada. En la vida nos encontramos rodeados de tesoros que nos quieren vender muchas cosas con la promesa de ser felices. Sin embargo, Jesús nos dice que poseer el Reino de Dios implica otra cosa a la que debemos poner atención. Esta va en la medida de donde ponemos los bienes que tenemos, del cómo compartimos nuestro tiempo, talento y tesoro con los demás. Se trata de no acumular, sino de buscar y dar, dar siempre, para obtener el tesoro que no se acaba. La seguridad de pertenecer al grupo de Jesús no está en querer todo, sino en confiar en Dios. Eso es lo difícil porque se tiene la tendencia de aferrarse a las cosas materiales, el dinero, la ropa, el carro, la casa y tantas otras cosas que se podrían mencionar. Cómo hacer para que a partir de hoy aumente la confianza en Dios? Dónde está a lo que me aferro? Qué me aleja de Dios? Para responder a estas preguntas Jesús nos explica tres parábolas: el patrón que regresa de su boda y encuentra a los siervos atentos y vigilantes, y prepara la mesa para ellos; el ladrón que entra a la casa, roba y se lleva todo; y la del administrado fiel que cuando llega el patrón lo encuentra trabajando. All Souls Cemetery Location: Corner of 25th St. & Hardy Ave. Patience is a virtue. At least that's what they say. You might think Geoffrey Chaucer in "The Canterbury Tales" first used the saying. There he wrote, "Patience is a great virtue of perfection." However, William Langland first used the saying in 1370 in his poem, "The Vision of Piers." The poem was in Middle English, so the saying reads, "Suffraunce is a soverayn virtue." But you get the picture and you have something to store away for your next trivia contest. Jesus hadn't read Chaucer or Langland when he was talking to his disciples in Luke 12 about the servant who begins to act improperly towards his charges because he believes there has been a delay in the master's return. But Jesus was talking about the values of patience and commitment. He was urging them to stay ready and keep working to spread the good news. It is easy for a person to get complacent and let down one's guard. It is easy for a person to get tired of waiting and then turn to other sources of satisfaction. The stewardship way of life is just that: a way of life. It is 24/7. We sometimes want to reduce it to a series of activities or take a break from giving of ourselves so much. We are not only talking about the second coming of Jesus Christ, but the ways that Jesus comes to us daily in the form of people in need. If we are not vigilant, we run the risk of being found asleep or even worse when the Master comes to call. A virtue is a trait or quality that we see as morally good or a necessary component for a moral life. Patience is important because staying the course and carrying the cross of Jesus is not easy. But Jesus, and Chaucer and Langland, are sure the reward at the end of the road is well worth it. Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Being a registered parishioner makes the process much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school or religious education registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals. A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings, too. Church law advises that territories or boundaries no longer limit parish registration. All Souls accepts anyone who wants to share in the life of the parish regardless of where they live. In order to register, you need to complete a registration card. Our Council of Catholic Women The Ladies of the Board of Council of Catholic Women attended the Lake Yale Symposium over last weekend. All of us had classes to teach us our new positions. Many speakers had enlightening ideas for us to bring home to the membership. It is also a very fun weekend to meet new Sisters in Christ as well as our ones we have known for years. We have already started plans for our first fundraiser. Enjoy this last month of vacation 'cause we will be off and running in September. You may also visit the parish website and download the appropriate forms under the Grade K-12 area under the Faith Formation tab, complete them and return to the parish office. We will also have open registration after all of our Masses on Saturday August 13 and Sunday, August 14. Please note that Faith Formation parent orientation will be held on August 30 and 31 and our Faith Formation classes will begin on September 6 and 7. All children in our programs must be registered each year. We do not automatically re-enroll students. Please note that registration in our Faith Formation Classes will NOT be accepted during the first week of classes so do not delay in registering your child/ren. Additionally, a baptism certificate with notations (if any) is to accompany all registrations. Contact the Faith Formation Office at to verify that your child s baptism certificate is on file, if in doubt. Parishes throughout the Diocese of Orlando are in need of volunteer American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters to help deaf or hearing impaired individuals fully participate in the celebration of Mass each week. This position requires a year-long commitment to serving one Saturday or Sunday Mass per week and a diocesan background screening. Volunteers must be 18 and older. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Saint of the Week Dominic Feast Day August 8 As a theology student, this Spaniard once sold his treasured religious books to help poor people during a famine. As a student, he held positions at the Osma Cathedral, which helped him pay for his studies. Ordained at age 25, he followed a contemplative life under the Rule of St. Augustine. Dominic embarked on a more active vocation after he went to southern France with his bishop on a papal mission to fight the Albigensian heresy an error that saw material creation as evil and so rejected the Incarnation and the sacraments and promoted a strictly ascetical life. Continuing to preach the Gospel, Dominic and his fellow itinerant preachers became a community, and in 1215, he established a religious house in Toulouse and headed the preaching mission, which the following year was formally established as the Order of Preachers, or Dominicans.
