2 All Souls Catholic 2 February 11, 2018 The 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time We may not like it, but generosity and risk often go hand-in-hand. At least, that's what Jesus shows us in today's Gospel as a leper approaches him for healing. Until the nineteenth century, lepers were shunned to the margins of society for fear of spreading the disease. To touch a leper was to risk becoming unclean yourself. In today's Gospel, Jesus defies convention. "Moved with pity, he reached out his hand, [and] touched him." The leper is healed! But this is not the only risk Jesus takes. Before Jesus heals the man, he knows full well the desperate nature of his situation. Jesus knows that this man will be overjoyed upon being healed and that he just might tell everyone he knows. For a Messiah looking to temporarily fly under the radar, healing this particular leper might not be the best idea. Jesus heals anyway. It can be easy to become calculated in our giving. If I go out of my way to help this person, how will it affect my reputation? How will this charitable donation affect my budget? How could I possibly make time to volunteer regularly? In today's Gospel, Jesus casts these concerns aside. He touches the untouchable. He reaches the unreachable. For his efforts, he receives a betrayal of his request for silence. "The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter." Before long "it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly." Jesus is forced to remain "outside in the deserted places." It would appear, perhaps, that he is unable to accomplish his mission. When we take a risk to be generous, things might not follow the prescribed path. We might be disappointed. We also might be surprised! Our witness to radical generosity is attractive to a world in desperate need. Indeed, when Jesus took risks for love, "People kept coming to him from everywhere." LPI, Inc. The Sacraments The Sacrament of Reconciliation: Confessions are heard each week on Saturday at the (SR #46) from 3:45pm to 4:45pm Learn more about this beautiful sacrament by visiting our website: The Sacrament of Baptism: Call the parish office to learn the necessary requirements and make an appointment with Father Kenneth Metz to have your child baptized. Ask us about the requirements for Godparents. The Sacrament of Marriage: Getting married? Congratulations! The process of being married in the Catholic could take between 6 months to a year to complete. Please contact Ann Cammarata at the parish office as soon as possible after your engagement if you would like to be married at All Souls Catholic. Anointing of the Sick: Please call the parish office. The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. Did you know that the Sacrament may be repeated if the person becomes sick again? A person should be anointed before surgery when a dangerous illness is the reason for the intervention. Eucharistic Ministry to the Sick and Homebound: If you are unable to attend Mass, please call the parish office so we may assist you in having a visit from one of our ministers or one of our priests. Catholic Funeral and Burial: Please call the parish office or have the funeral home director contact us to arrange the Funeral Mass and for more information about burial at All Souls Catholic Cemetery. Everyday Stewardship If you witnessed a miracle, wouldn't you want to tell everyone? If you saw the sun dance in the sky, a crippled man walk, or the Virgin Mary appear in front of you, wouldn't you just want to shout about it from a rooftop so all could hear? Maybe you would be afraid others would not believe you. You might choose instead to keep it to yourself to avoid criticism and ridicule. At least, if you saw a miracle, you would have a choice: to tell or not to tell. Yet, at every Mass we witness a miracle. We witness bread and wine as it becomes the true presence of Jesus Christ. It isn't a saint or Mary appearing before us; it is actually Jesus! When was the last time you told anybody about that miracle? It might not be easy for us to always talk about our faith, but we can show them. When we receive the Eucharist into our bodies, we become one with Christ. We go forth from the Mass as a living testimony of the miracle that occurred at Mass. People will not be able to simply look at us and see the evidence. We need to demonstrate to them the reality of this miracle by our good deeds and profound acts of charity. That is stewardship. That is bearing witness to the truth of our God being truly present to us. It is something we should want to share with everyone. -Tracy Earl Welliver, Master of Theological Studies, for LPI, Inc.
