2 All Souls Catholic 2 April 1, 2018 Easter Sunday The first light of Easter dawn had begun to creep over the horizon. The steadfast women from Friday's gory events are returning again to the body of their Lord. "Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?" How quickly we return to mundane concerns and how thoroughly God wants to surprise us! Imagine the utter shock upon seeing the stone rolled away, the tomb empty, and a stranger clothed in light proclaiming the impossible. "You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; he is not here." He is risen indeed and the world will never be the same. We know from other Gospel passages that Mary Magdalene made haste to the disciples to proclaim the Good News. We know that Peter and John rushed to the tomb to see for themselves. We know that the wonder and awe of the Resurrection permeated the lives of the apostles until their own dying day. Can we comprehend the utterly world-changing nature of this surprise? The historical reanimation of a dead man is of no real value to us. But we know that Easter Sunday is so much more. By the Resurrection of Jesus, life has triumphed over death for us all. The gates of heaven are opened and the treasury of graces is poured out upon the here and now. This Resurrection Day, let us draw near, amazed yet unafraid, to the risen Christ. Let us recall the words of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, "Jesus is not a character from the past. He lives, and he walks before us as one who is alive, he calls us to follow him, the living one, and in this way to discover for ourselves the path of life" (Easter Vigil, April 15, 2006). Aleluya, aleluya! LPI, Inc. The Knights of Columbus is proud to invite you to support the nationwide theatrical release of Paul, Apostle of Christ. Produced by Catholic ministry ODB Films and starring acclaimed actors Jim Caviezel and James Faulkner, this movie dynamically and truthfully illustrates the beginnings of Christian persecution under the Roman Empire. St. Paul s story is one of conversion, forgiveness and perseverance in the face of extreme intolerance, not unlike that faced by many Christians today. This dramatic retelling of his life can move the hearts of both believers and nonbelievers. Q u es t i o n s f o r R ef l e c t i o n & R es p o n s e First Reading: In this passage from Acts, Peter proclaims the resurrection message with boldness. When is the last time you shared the good news of the Gospel? Second Reading: What do you think Paul means when he says each of us is joined to the death and resurrection of Christ? Gospel Reading: As you reflect once more on the Resurrection of Jesus, where can you bring new life to someone this week? Recognize God in the Ordinary When I was younger and growing up in Alexandria, VA, I remember one year it actually snowed on Easter. It was crazy to see it that late in the year. We got up and dressed in our best spring clothes so we could venture into the snow on our way to Easter Mass. I remember thinking that the day did not feel much like Easter. It was hard to really get into the mood of God making all things new on a day so cold and full of flurries. If I am honest, I think we rushed home after Mass just so we could get on warm pajamas and just watch TV for the rest of the day, snuggled up on the couch with blankets. It might as well have been a Sunday in January. This year the odds are against it snowing on Easter where I live here in North Carolina. However, for far too many it might as well snow. To them, Easter has nothing to do with the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, new life, or anything of the sort. It is just another Sunday. Some of them don't care and never think of Jesus or God on any Sunday of the year. But for others, it will not feel like Easter because they have been forgotten. On this day they will sit at home, just like they sit every single day of their lives. They might be poor, elderly, disabled, or simply alone. On this day, there is no resurrection celebration because they have no real experience of the joy of life. This is where good Everyday Stewards can make a difference. In the midst of buying candy and decorating eggs for baskets and buying new clothes to wear to Easter Mass, find someone who needs to experience the power of Easter. Don't tell them Jesus rose from them, but show them. Instead of the cold of isolation, bring to them the warmth of new life. -Tracy Earl Welliver, Masters in Theological Studies, LPI, Inc.

There should be one such intention for every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation. Here is what the Code of Canon Law says about it: After a pastor has taken possession of his parish, he is obliged to apply a Mass for the people entrusted to him on each Sunday and holy day of obligation in his diocese. [Canon 534 canon 540 extends this also to Parish Administrators] It is commonly understood in the that a pastor has care for all of the people within his parish boundaries, not just for Catholics. This is a wonderful thing that you can share with your non-catholic neighbors. Tell them: We are praying for you each week. We hope you will someday join us. The door is open. Can I answer any questions for you about the Catholic faith?
