2 All Souls Catholic Church 2 June 18, 2017 The Body and Blood of Christ "The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, 'How can this man give us his flesh to eat?'" From the beginning, the Eucharist has been a source of controversy. Some people have always found the teaching difficult to accept. But as Catholics, the Blessed Sacrament is at the heart of our worship and our spirituality; we go to Mass to share in the holy sacrifice of Jesus' body and blood, and we receive spiritual nourishment from partaking of this heavenly food. As Jesus himself tells us in today's Gospel, "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him." From this passage it is clear that Jesus intended the Eucharist to be a tremendous gift for us, for "whoever eats this bread will live forever." This of course is because the bread is Christ's "flesh for the life of the world." In other words, just as he gave his body on the cross to save us from our sins, so too this same flesh is given for us at every Mass to strengthen our weakness and unite us more deeply to our Savior. Receiving Communion isn't like taking a magic pill, however. We must beware of reducing this sacrament to an empty ritual or a foolproof guarantee of heaven. No, it is quite possible to receive Communion unworthily and reject its spiritual efficacy. Just like the benefits of a healthy meal can be undone by a habit of binging on junk food, so too we can prevent holy Communion from having its full benefits when we crowd our souls with vices and sins. If, on the other hand, we wish to let this sacrament of divine grace flourish, we should receive it with a sincere spirit of gratitude and reverence, praying that we may be made worthy to receive such a gift. LPI, Inc. The Sacraments The Sacrament of Reconciliation: Confessions are heard each week on Saturday at the Church (SR #46) from 3:45pm to 4:45pm Learn more about this beautiful sacrament by visiting our website: The Sacrament of Baptism: Call the parish office to learn the necessary requirements and make an appointment with Father Kenneth Metz to have your child baptized. Ask us about the requirements for Godparents. The Sacrament of Marriage: Getting married? Congratulations! The process of being married in the Catholic Church could take between 6 months to a year to complete. Please contact Ann Cammarata at the parish office as soon as possible after your engagement if you would like to be married at All Souls Catholic Church. Anointing of the Sick: Please call the parish office. The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. Did you know that the Sacrament may be repeated if the person becomes sick again? A person should be anointed before surgery when a dangerous illness is the reason for the intervention. Eucharistic Ministry to the Sick and Homebound: If you are unable to attend Mass, please call the parish office so we may assist you in having a visit from one of our ministers or one of our priests. Catholic Funeral and Burial: Please call the parish office or have the funeral home director contact us to arrange the Funeral Mass and for more information about burial at All Souls Catholic Cemetery. Recognize God in the Ordinary When I was a child I can remember stopping by my parish or another local Catholic church to just spend some time in prayer before the holy Eucharist. We didn't have exposition and adoration much in those days, but we were keenly aware of the presence of Jesus in the tabernacle. I would sometimes stare at the lighted candle near it and know that Jesus was alive. I had never heard someone speak about a stewardship way of life back then. If I am honest, the primary message I heard back in those days was along the lines of we need to be as good as we are able. Sacrifice was only at Lent, disciples were people in the Bible, and generosity mostly had to do with the collection basket and the poor box at the church entrance. I even went to Catholic schools! Maybe the message of stewardship was there somewhere packaged differently and I just missed it. It wasn't until I was an adult, and after acquiring two theology degrees, that I understood both with my head and my heart what a stewardship way of life really meant. But I look back at those days and I realize that the groundwork was laid for me to understand these things. It was those times before the holy Eucharist that I began to understand true sacrifice. It was at those times that I began to understand how actions and realities that seem so simple to the human eye can be so profound. And it was at those times that I began to see that true love knows no bounds. What does the holy Eucharist say to you about stewardship? Maybe today is a great time to reflect on your answer. --Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
3 The Body and Blood of Christ 3 Ma ke Al l S o ul s y o ur pa r i s h h o me! Often people attend Mass at All Souls for several years, but never register. Registering here is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and to make a commitment to the life of All Souls Church. Being a registered parishioner makes the process much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school or religious education registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals. A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings, too. Church law advises that territories or boundaries no longer limit parish registration. All Souls accepts anyone who wants to share in the life of the parish regardless of where they live. In order to register, you need to complete a registration card. These may be found in the narthex of the church or chapel, the parish office during the week or online at our parish website: Why not sign up today? Dr. Kathleen Kiley, Principal Mrs. Mary Moran, Asst. His father opposed a religious vocation, planning instead a military career for his oldest son. But Aloysius joined the Jesuits in Rome in 1585, taking his vows two years later. His health had been compromised by kidney disease, but he served in a Jesuit hospital opened in Rome when plague struck the city. He died of plague while ministering to the sick. St. Robert Bellarmine, his spiritual director, said the young Jesuit s austere religious practices and penances were so extreme that others should not follow them. Canonized in 1726, Aloysius later was declared protector of young students and patron saint of Catholic youth. Now is the time to register your child/children for our Faith Formation Classes. Please visit: download the form and return to the parish office to ensure your child s spot in our classes beginning this August. S an Pe d r o C e n t e r S u mme r C a mp s Registration is open for San Pedro s Summer Camp, Heart of the Gospel. Students are invited to join an amazing journey this summer to dive into the heart of the Gospels, uncovering God s Truths that will transform their lives! At San Pedro Summer Camp, campers trade the distractions (and tech) of daily life for a week of faith, friends and fun! They become immersed in faith through the Sacraments and prayer. They build lifelong friendships through the fun of low ropes course, archery and a giant slip and slide. They encounter Christ through well trained young adult counselors who infectiously spread their love for God through witnesses and silly skits. Camps run June July and are available as day camps or overnight camps for elementary through high school students. Call for more details or visit the website to register: Why do we do that? Catholic Traditions Explained Question: One of my coworkers said that Catholics believe we kill Christ again when we celebrate the Mass since it is His sacrifice. I know that is not right, but how do we explain it? Answer: We do indeed believe that the Mass is the unbloody sacrifice of Jesus on the cross and we believe that the sacrifice is made present again on the altar not to repeat it, but to join ourselves to it. We are joined to the saving work of Christ, not just simply remembering it. The closest thing we might have in our culture is when a couple saves some wedding cake in the freezer, and on their first anniversary they may watch their wedding video and eat the cake, all to recapture the moment. The Jews celebrate a Seder meal, not to remember the Passover, but to participate in it through the ritual foods, questions, and readings. "The Catechism of the Catholic Church" describes the Mass as the "Holy Sacrifice, because it makes present the one sacrifice of Christ" (#1330). To think that we must sacrifice Christ over and over again would negate what he did on Calvary. To celebrate and renew it each day allows us to participate in it. That is the "source and summit" of Christian life (#1324).

Vivir La Liturgia, LPI. Inspiration for the Week Today is all about transformation. The bread and wine is transformed into the body and blood of Christ and we, by partaking in the Eucharist, are also transformed into the body and blood of Christ. St. Augustine issued a wise instruction regarding the Eucharist: "Become what you eat." This is the real challenge of every eucharistic celebration. Will we allow God to transform us into his Son so that the hope, love, healing, comfort, and mercy he embodies can be brought to our world through us? As Jesus feeds us, how can we feed others? Live the Liturgy, LPI. Looking for a weekend get-away? How about a weekend that will focus on love, caring, and relationship? It will be the best gift you'll give each other this year.
