Anointing of the Sick: Please call the parish office. The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. Did you know that the Sacrament may be repeated if the person becomes sick again? A person should be anointed before surgery when a dangerous illness is the reason for the intervention. Eucharistic Ministry to the Sick and Homebound: If you are unable to attend Mass, please call the parish office so we may assist you in having a visit from one of our ministers or one of our priests. We care for the sacred linens on a weekly rotating schedule. The ministry is made up of people who launder and iron the linens used on the altar during Mass. If you want to get involved in serving the parish and prefer to do something at home, this ministry just might be for you. The linens used during Mass need to be laundered and ironed on a weekly basis. Members are given detailed instructions. Call the parish office to join this important ministry! Prayer Shawl Ministry What we do? We give the gift of comfort and prayer to those people who need prayers and support or are lonely and hurting in our parish. The experience of the risen Lord could not be contained and the two returned to Jerusalem to tell the eleven that they had seen Jesus. In the midst of their conversations, Jesus appears, offering peace. The disciples were terrified thinking that he was a ghost. While Jesus let them touch him, they were still incredulous and did not recognize him until after he shared a meal with them and spoke the words that helped them to understand the scriptures. This is very similar to the Emmaus encounter. This part of the story emphasizes the physical reality of the resurrected body of the Lord. At the time the gospel was written some heretics taught that Jesus had not really suffered and that his body had been a spiritual expression of humanity. In today s story the disciples touch him; they can see the marks of the wounds in his hands and feet and eat with him. He is no ghost! Today s reading offers three significant messages: It was the Risen Christ who opened the minds of the apostles to understand the Scriptures. Christ was with the two on the way to Emmaus as he is with the believers gathered for Sunday Mass today. Jesus commissioned the disciples to be witnesses to his resurrection. This theme continues in the Book of the Acts of the Apostles, the second volume written by Luke. For personal reflection: 1. What troubles my heart today? In what areas of my life do I need greater faith? 2. Jesus appears to us today in the people around us. He often does so with outstretched hands. After his mother died, he moved to France to continue studies with her family. In 1060 he joined the Benedictines at Bec in Normandy, and in 1078 was elected abbot, which increasingly involved him in civil and church affairs in France and England. In 1093 he became archbishop of Canterbury, a post held until his death. During his tenure, Canterbury became England s primatial see, but Anselm was twice exiled over conflicts with English monarchs.
