Many years ago, someone shared with me a very personal and painful struggle with Jesus words today. aving traumatic, horrific, yester-years memories of physical abuse in a family setting, whose emotional scars are life-long - abuse made worse by the abuser twisting Jesus Gospel words today so badly as to justify those welts and bruises. hall we take Jesus words literally? r, Gee, wish had thought of them when a Jehovah s Witness came to the door? f, remember to remember them, giving ourselves a welcome edge in a game of Biblical ping pong? ake them literally? f course not! ake them seriously? -- that s different! hose eyes and ears..., those hands..., our mouths and voices... earing today s Gospel, we must first remember that Jesus restored sight to the blind, voices to the mute. phphatha! Be opened! Jesus prayer, our Gospel three weeks ago, enabled someone to hear and speak clearly. e made whole a man s withered hand on the abbath! e cured paralytics, watched them walk and even dance! e healed lepers, some of them more grateful than others. is parable of the Good amaritan described someone tending the wounds of a victim of a crime. Jesus rebuked eter, whose sword severed Malchus ear [John 18:10-11]; Jesus re-stored that ear to its rightful place [and its rightful owner!] Would this same Jesus now have us sever limbs and ears, gouge out eyes, lop off tongues? But, what about those eyes? when they view nternet porn that cheapens someone s dignity, or ignores the reality of a human body made in God s image? when what they read on a Face-book page is never worth reading - when their vision of prejudice, or myopia of hatred, makes violent our world? What about those ears? - ready receptacles for the obscene story, the latest Didja hear?? What about those ears? - eager to hear a juicy tidbit, a confidence made public, faults bandied about, a trust betrayed? nd..., what about ears all closed up unwilling to heal a hurt, deaf to an apology, tuning out an explanation, closed to another viewpoint? What about those hands? used to make a bomb, supposedly in God s name, or used to fire a weapon in a family setting or on no one in particular? What about hands raised in anger, formed into fists, one finger more obvious than the others? What about hands used to steal? verybody does it... who will know the difference?... hey ll never miss it. Mouths and voices, what about them? spouting obscenity, speaking slander whose high price is someone s good name and reputation? What of voices used to belittle, bully, or make fun of someone or the text whose reach is far and wide? o mistaking! no mincing! Jesus words today. ut off a limb? Destroy a sense? ardly. sing Jesus words to justify abuse and cruelty more sinful than most! nstead Jesus dramatic and emphatic language today calls us to conversion cut off the evil, root out what is singul, cast aside whatever keeps us from im? nd so, how to understand today s Gospel? aul s message to the orinthians is helpful. You must know that your body is a temple of the oly pirit who is within the pirit you have received from God... o glorify God in your body. 8 D. eptember 27 magine what it is like to try to raise a family as a single mom (or dad for that matter). ow do hold down a job while taking care of all the responsibilities of being a parent? magine if you are a woman with a high school degree, two kids and your husband walks out on you. You have minimal job skills and a pile of bills to pay each month. his is the simple and sad fact for too many people in this country and around the world. t is to protect people in those types of positions that many people are in favor of making sure that workers are paid a living wage. his is a salary that gives you a chance to survive and pay the bills. n order for this to happen, countries make laws that guarantee a simple basic wage for working parents. hese laws came into existence because many employers were unwilling to provide the most basic wage for their workers. eople were asked to work long hours in brutal conditions for little money simply because their employers had the power to do so. he basic rights of workers such as laws governing teen hours, conditions and wages came into existence because without them abuses were rampant. What does this have to do with hristian faith? verything. lthough you might hear some people say that the hurch should stay out of politics, the opposite is the truth. olitics is the ay that countries establish laws that reflect their values. he hurch is made up of priests and bishops but it is also made up of all of us. We have the right to work for laws that benefit those in need. hose laws may range from laws that help protect the unborn to laws that protect the rights of workers. n today s readings, the letter of James cries out to heaven on behalf of the oppressed worker : ome now, you rich, weep and wail over your impending miseries.
