3 From the esk of ur Pastoral ssociate earning More about Catholic ocial eachings ption for the Poor and ulnerable his week s particular rice bowl focus is on the family of 5 year old anious ssa (see his picture in the vestibule of the church) fleeing the war in yria. Finding safe haven in ebanon has been a blessing, but without his father s ability to find work, the family now lives in a makeshift settlement and struggles to find food. he plight of millions of yrians is the same as the war in yria rages on. Catholic elief ervices is present in this inhospitable environment providing food vouchers to families in need. his ent we are invited to participate in the effort to offer relief through C by filling our rice bowls. What we give up for ent changes lives. ur gestures of solidarity do make a difference. ur church has a long history, beginning with sacred cripture itself, of making the plight of the poor and vulnerable our concern as well. n teaching us charity, the Prophet saiah proclaims you have been called for the victory of justice, and the story of the ast Judgment (Mt 25:31-46) reminds us that we will be judged by our response to the least among us. Because the poor are due preferential respect due to the special situation they have in society, the more fortunate should renounce some of their rights so as to place their goods more generously at the service of others. Call to ction (ctogesima dveniens, Pope Paul ), #23 he Catechism of the Catholic Church explains: hose who are oppressed by poverty are the object of a preferential love on the part of the Church which, since her origin and in spite of the failings of many of her members, has not ceased to work for their relief, defense, and liberation through numerous works of charity which remain indispensable always and everywhere (2248). he Fathers of the Church laid down the duty of the rich toward the poor in no uncertain terms. s t. mbrose put it, "You are not making a gift of your possessions to the poor; you are handing over to the poor what belongs to them." id you ever think about it that way? f you give something to the poor, or if you neglect the poor person that's standing on the street corner begging, you are depriving that person of what belongs to them? mbrose is very clear: "You are not making a gift of your possessions to the poor. You are handing over to the poor what is theirs, for what has been given in common for the use of all, you have arrogated to yourself." t. John Chrysostom vigorously recalls this: "ot to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. he goods we possess are not ours, but theirs, om. in azaro 2, 5. he prime purpose of this special commitment to the poor is to enable them to become active participants in the life of society. t is to enable all persons to share in and contribute to the common good. he option for the poor, therefore, is not an adversarial slogan that pits one group or class against another. ather it states that the deprivation and powerlessness of the poor wounds the whole community. he extent of their suffering is a measure of how far we are from being a true community of persons. hese wounds will be healed only by greater solidarity with the poor and among the poor themselves, - ational Conference of Catholic Bishops, conomic Justice for ll, 88 he earth belongs to everyone, not to the rich. n the evelopment of Peoples (Populorum Progressio, Pope Paul ). houghts and Prayers at the enten Cross: his week s enten rice bowl initiative takes us to ebanon, a safe haven for those fleeing the humanitarian crisis in yria. Five year old anious ssa and his family struggle to find food and live in makeshift settlements due to lack of jobs for those fleeing the war. Catholic elief ervices provides food vouchers for these suffering families who long for peace and the day they will return home. nd so we pray: God of Justice, open our eyes to see you in the faces of the poor. pen our ears to hear you in the cries of the hungry. pen our mouth to defend those suffering due to oppressive political systems. Give us generous hearts, willing to stand with our suffering brothers and sisters remembering that what we do to the least ones, we do to you. men. t. imothy Parish Mission:he arvest Plenty/ he aborers Few - Mar , :00pm.in the church.
