Monsignor Joseph Mirro, Pastor ext. 202 Rev. Vian NtegerejImana, Associate Pastor ext. 203 Robert Braun, Deacon OUR MISSION Saint Anthony of Padua Parish is a welcoming, loving Catholic community, centered in Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit. Together we celebrate the liturgy in prayer and sacrament; we educate our children and adults in the faith; we support and reach out to those in need. We believe the Holy Spirit is calling us to continue: to love one another as Jesus loves us, to share the word of God and to serve both within and beyond our Parish family. 2 A Very Merry Christmas from Fr. Theodore Ekwem To my dear friends at St. Anthony s, With all our heart, my students, staff and I wish you all Merry Christmas! We have a new school outig wear sewn in African style as you can see in the photos. We are happy and grateful to all of you at St. Anthony s for your support and care. You will also see in the pictures of our students peeling cassava and frying to make garri (our local fufu), our growing poultry and a segment of fish pond. We ate some fish and sold some this season. These could not have been possible without the generosity of men and women of goodwill from St. Anthony s. We are forever grateful, and you are always in our prayers. Miss you all, and look forward to meeting again this summer. Merry Christmas! Fr. Ted -2-

3 Pastor s Pen MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS FOR THE CELEBRATION OF THE FIFTIETH WORLD DAY OF PEACE 1 JANUARY 2017 Nonviolence: a Style of Politics for Peace At the beginning of this New Year, I offer heartfelt wishes of peace to the world s peoples and nations, to heads of state and government, and to religious, civic and community leaders. I wish peace to every man, woman and child, and I pray that the image and likeness of God in each person will enable us to acknowledge one another as sacred gifts endowed with immense dignity. Especially in situations of conflict, let us respect this, our deepest dignity, and make active nonviolence our way of life. On this occasion, I would like to reflect on nonviolence as a style of politics for peace. I ask God to help all of us to cultivate nonviolence in our most personal thoughts and values. May charity and nonviolence govern how we treat each other as individuals, within society and in international life. When victims of violence are able to resist the temptation to retaliate, they become the most credible promotors of nonviolent peacemaking. In the most local and ordinary situations and in the international order, may nonviolence become the hallmark of our decisions, our relationships and our actions, and indeed of political life in all its forms. A broken world Violence is not the cure for our broken world. Countering violence with violence leads at best to forced migrations and enormous suffering, because vast amounts of resources are diverted to military ends and away from the everyday needs of young people, families experiencing hardship, the elderly, the infirm and the great majority of people in our world. At worst, it can lead to the death, physical and spiritual, of many people, if not of all. The Good News 3. Jesus himself lived in violent times. Yet he taught that the true battlefield, where violence and peace meet, is the human heart: for it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come (Mk 7:21). But Christ s message in this regard offers a radically positive approach. He unfailingly preached God s unconditional love, which welcomes and forgives. He taught his disciples to love their enemies (cf. Mt 5:44) and to turn the other cheek (cf. Mt 5:39). More powerful than violence Nonviolence is sometimes taken to mean surrender, lack of involvement and passivity, but this is not the case. When Mother Teresa received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, she clearly stated her own message of active nonviolence: We in our family don t need bombs and guns, to destroy to bring peace just get together, love one another And we will be able to overcome all the evil that is in the world. Mother Teresa is a symbol, an icon of our times The decisive and consistent practice of nonviolence has produced impressive results. The achievements of Mahatma Gandhi and Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan in the liberation of India, and of Dr Martin Luther King Jr in combating racial discrimination will never be forgotten. Women in particular are often leaders of nonviolence, as for example, was Leymah Gbowee and the thousands of Liberian women, who organized pray-ins and nonviolent protest that resulted in high-level peace talks to end the second civil war in Liberia. The Church has been involved in nonviolent peacebuilding strategies in many countries, engaging even the most violent parties in efforts to build a just and lasting peace. My invitation Peacebuilding through active nonviolence is the natural and necessary complement to the Church s continuing efforts to limit the use of force by the application of moral norms; she does so by her participation in the work of international institutions and through the competent contribution made by so many Christians to the drafting of legislation at all levels. Jesus himself offers a manual for this strategy of peacemaking in the Sermon on the Mount. The eight Beatitudes (cf. Mt 5:3-10) provide a portrait of the person we could describe as blessed, good and authentic. Blessed are the meek, Jesus tells us, the merciful and the peacemakers, those who are pure in heart, and those who hunger and thirst for justice. To act in this way means to choose solidarity as a way of making history and building friendship in society. Active nonviolence is a way of showing that unity is truly more powerful and more fruitful than conflict. Everything in the world is interconnected.[21] Certainly differences can cause frictions. But let us face them constructively and non-violently, so that tensions and oppositions can achieve a diversified and life-giving unity, preserving what is valid and useful on both sides. I pledge the assistance of the Church in every effort to build peace through active and creative nonviolence. On 1 January 2017, the new Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development will begin its work. It will help the Church to promote in an ever more effective way the inestimable goods of justice, peace, and the care of creation and concern for migrants, those in need, the sick, the excluded and marginalized, the imprisoned and the unemployed, as well as victims of armed conflict, natural disasters, and all forms of slavery and torture. Every such response, however modest, helps to build a world free of violence, the first step towards justice and peace. -3-

Supernatural communication was nothing new for Mary. The angel Gabriel had already appeared and spoken to her when she agreed to bear God s Son. Her husband Joseph also had a kind of divine intervention in the dream where the angel told him to go ahead and marry her. When she was first pregnant, her cousin Elizabeth had been led by the Holy Spirit to know the secret that Mary was the mother of my Lord (Lk 1:43). Now, Jesus has just been born and a crew of earthy shepherds appears at her door with a message from heaven: that the Savior has been born. And Mary believed them. She did not doubt their sincerity or the authenticity of their message. She took the words to heart, and meditated upon the meaning of it all. What might strike us as peculiar in all of this is that God chose to speak to Mary in a variety of ways. This holy and immaculate woman, this Mother of God, did not always receive direct communication from on high. Sometimes, God chose to speak to her through other people. Sometimes, he revealed himself to them in order to reveal himself to her. And God does the same with us. It s easy to daydream about having our own personal revelation from God, to hear his voice loud and clear, directing, encouraging, and supporting us in our times of need and confusion. But this isn t the standard pattern of God s operation. Mary was tuned in enough to hear God s voice all around her instead of expecting it to always sound the same. We can imitate this same kind of openness by seeking to discover how God may be speaking to us through the voices of others. -5-

6 Feast of the Epiphany ~ Bless Your Home Feast of the Epiphany Bless Your Home We invite you to adopt this custom in your family. The family gathers to ask God s blessing on their home and on those who live in or visit the home. It is an invitation for Jesus to be a daily guest in our home, our comings and goings, our conversations, our work and play, our joys and sorrows. A traditional way of doing this is to use chalk to write above the home s entrance, 20 + C + M + B The letters C, M, B have two meanings. They are the initials of the traditional names of the three magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. They also abbreviate the Latin words Christus mansionem benedicat, May Christ bless the house. The + signs represent the cross and 2017 is the year. Instructions for Blessing the Home Using the blessed chalk mark the lintel of your front door (or front porch step) as follows: 20 + C + M + B + 17 while saying: The three Wise Men, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar followed the star of God s Son who became human two thousand and sixteen years ago. May Christ bless our home and remain with us throughout the new year. Amen. Then offer the following prayer: Visit, O blessed Lord, this home with the gladness of your presence. Bless all who live or visit here with the gift of your love; and grant that we may manifest your love to each other and to all whose lives we touch. May we grow in grace and in the knowledge and love of you; guide, comfort, and strengthen us in peace, O Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen Chalking the door is a way to celebrate and literally mark the occasion of the Epiphany and God s blessing of our lives and home. With time the chalk will fade. As it does we let the meaning of the symbols written sink into the depths of our heart and be manifest in our words and actions the Latin words, Christus mansionem benedictat, May Christ bless the house. -6-

15 Taxes and Giving at Christmas and Year s End TAXES AND GIVING AT CHRISTMAS AND YEAR'S END Did you know that "charitable giving" is one of only a few tax provisions that was not greatly impacted by recent federal tax legislation. Many people enjoy using Christmas and year s end as a special time to give to their favorite Catholic institutions and to also positively impact their federal and state income taxes. Christmas and year -end giving provides many advantages to you, the donor. All gifts made on or before December 31 are tax deductible for the tax year in which your gift is made. A last reminder to make that special gift or increased gift that you've wanted to make during the year. If you are an itemizer, your gift will lessen your tax liability for the tax year in which your gift is made. If you are not an itemizer, your Christmas gift may be just the right decision to allow you to itemize and lower your tax bill (check with your tax advisor). "Carry Over Deduction," depending on your age, income and the size of your gift, you may be able to "carry over" your charitable gift tax deduction to subsequent years. Most importantly, make a return to God of your blessings at Christmas and assist our Catholic goals: serving God s people through our parish. METHODS OF GIVING Many different, exciting and thought provoking forms of Christmas and year end giving are available, all of which are tax deductible. GIVING SECURITIES... is perhaps the best way to make a Catholic gift of faith. You can save and give at the same time! Stocks, bonds, and even shares in mutual funds that have appreciated can be given and your deduction is for the full market value at the time the gift is made - not just your original cost for the securities. You can also save by paying no capital gains tax on the sale of the stock as you would if you sold the stock and held the cash. DEPRECIATED SECURITIES? You can sell stock that has declined in a down market and claim that loss on your tax return. Then, donate the cash from the sale of the stock and, of course, claim a charitable deduction on your tax return for the amount of the gift. A professional stock broker can assist you in making this type of gift. CASH - the most standard and familiar way to make a Christmas or year end gift. Simply write a check to make your gift. PROPERTY - both real estate and personal property qualify as charitable gifts that would benefit your parish through Christmas and year end giving. Consider real estate such as residences, farmland and buildings as well as antiques, jewelry, artwork/coin collections, or other collectibles. BUSINESS GIFTS - businesses can make gifts and receive tax deductions as well. Businesses can give gifts of inventory, equipment, materials and service as well as cash. If you own your own business, giving through your business is another way to benefit your parish and positively impact your taxes. LIFE INSURANCE ~ cash value in current or paid up life insurance policies can benefit our Catholic parish. Of course, naming our Catholic parish as a beneficiary of life insurance proceeds can be a wonderful means of making a future major gift to "give the gift... " You may even designate policy dividends as gifts. MATCHING GIFTS If you are an employee or a participating retiree of a company or corporation with a matching gifts program," you can make such a gift to Parish Outreach or Trinity Regional R.C. School. Check with your employer. YOUR CHRISTMAS CHECKLIST Do you have us on your Christmas gift list? All gifts made on or before December 31 are tax deductible for this tax year. Gifts of securities (stocks, bonds, mutual funds) are some of the best gifts to make whether they have appreciated or depreciated in value. A charitable contribution may just be the right decision to enable you to itemize your taxes, if you don't already. Check with a broker about avoiding a last minute rush for year -end gifts of securities. Potential tax law changes may make a gift this year even better than next year. Know that our prayers and thoughts will be with you at Christmas and all the year round. Call us whenever we can be of help. We are all given just a few short years to "Build up the Kingdom." Sharing your blessings through a generous gift at Christmas will make this world just a little bit better because you made a difference while you were here. You made a Catholic Gift of Faith. Remember, God is never outdone in His generosity. Thank you and God bless you. Note: This information is not intended as legal advice.
