HOLY COMMUNION We welcome all confirmed members of the Anglican Church and visitors who are communicant members of other churches to share in the Holy Communion with us. Our practice is to have the Holy Communion by intinction (dipping of the wafer into the wine). If you are not partaking of the Communion, you are welcome to come forward to receive a prayer of blessing. Please keep your hands clasped to indicate that you are not receiving the Communion. CAR PARKING As there are limited parking lots within St Andrew s Cathedral, members may wish to park at carparks in close proximity to the Cathedral. Visitors who worship with us and park their cars in the Cathedral can collect a free pass from the Information Desk or from the Welcome Centre. PRAYER & MINISTRY If you would like to talk to someone or receive prayer ministry, in most Services this is offered either during or after a Service. Note the following: 7.00am After Service at Graham White Library, North Transept, Ground floor 8.00am After Service at prayer table, white tent 9.00am In Service 11.15am After Service at communion rails 11.30am In Service 5.00pm After Service at communion rails CHILDREN MINISTRY Each Service has special provisions for families with young children. Please inquire with the ushers. 18 FEBRUARY 2018 THE FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT COLLECT Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness, and was tempted as we are, yet without sin: give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to your Spirit; and, as you know our weakness, so may we know your power to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen LECTIONARY READINGS Genesis 9: Peter 3:18-22 Mark 1:9-15 PSALM FOR 5PM Psalm 119:17-32 HYMNS 8.00am: CP95, When I Look Into Your Holiness, CP538, CP am: CP95, When I Look Into Your Holiness, CP538, CP pm: HP31, HP140, CP507, HP299 Photo: Leaders Conference 2018, 26 & 27 January 1
2 THE VICAR WRITES Almost every culture or race has a festival where family, identity and culture are celebrated. For many Chinese, it will be the Chinese New Year (CNY) festival. In most years, CNY sits uncomfortably with Lent. Feasting and fasting, noise and silence, gathering and coming away, the contrast cannot be more stark, and the Chinese Christian has to juggle between both. For many, observation of Lent starts later, afforded by a longer 40 day period. Having received the mark of ash, in the next few days he will be enjoying delectable feasts with his family. Hymns will give way to Kong Si, Kong Si Ni CNY songs have always helped set the atmosphere through blaring Rediffusions of yesteryears and today, through CNY programmes on flat-screen TVs. In modern and urbanised Singapore, the concept of celebration as a village and clan is largely lost. Added to that, there is no noisy firing of crackers or fireworks to gather the village. And so, all across the city, in countless little huddles in HDB flats, mostly behind closed doors, the homing magnet gathers ties that bind. The Reunion Dinner on CNY Eve is the most important gathering for most families. On the table will be dishes which carry the family tradition, may it be Nonya, Hakka or Hokkien. Therefore, home cooking is preferred, if at all possible. HOME AND FAMILY 2 No matter how strained family ties are, families still try to gather, and there is an unspoken forgiveness or a staying of grievances. As conversations flow, we remember that family is a given and gift. Whatever or whoever, we ought to receive it with gratitude. Going beyond a truce, some mending may actually happen. For a few days, work is set aside as the home becomes centerstage. It has been a while since one stood at the balcony and stared at his neighbourhood. Or sat long enough on the sofa to be reminded of the special role of the living room in gathering the family. The ambitious readjust their perspective. After all, the home is a graveyard of ambition. As a proud father watches his children, the unquenchable desire for public honour recedes into the background. Problems at work are temporarily forgotten. The second day will be about visiting relatives, and on the third day, close friends. For those who come from broken families, the reunion night can cruelly open some old wounds. I don t think those wounds can be healed completely on this side of life. But CNY celebration stretches long enough to remind one that close and faithful friends are still some of the good gifts of life. Indeed, every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father James 1:17 As Christians, we can be grateful for the many gifts He has bestowed on us through our culture, family and friends. And most of all, the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ, who has called us into His family.
3 PRAYER HIGHLIGHTS WORLD Ukraine Pray for President Petro Poroshenko to have divine wisdom and knowledge to lead the nation in righteousness and peace. Pray for healing and reconciliation between opposing political leaders, between pro- Russian and pro-ukrainian groups and for good relations with neighbouring countries. Thank God for much improved freedom of religion today in Ukraine. Pray for the rapidly growing missionary movement, for more leaders, for provision of resources and for fruitful partnerships with Western and other agencies. Pray for the work of indigenous Christian agencies working in outreach with children in summer camps and schools and in humanitarian work with prisoners, hospitals, orphanages and soup kitchens. SINGAPORE Fake news can ruin innocent people, cause unnecessary alarm to the public, divert emergency resources from real emergencies, destabilise society and undermine institutions. Pray that God will grant insight and creative strategies to the Select Committee led by Deputy Speaker Charles Chong as they set out to tackle the rising problem of fake news in Singapore. DIOCESE Transition in key leadership Pray that the Lord will guide and direct the process for key leadership transition in our Diocese in the next few years. COLLECT FOR ASH WEDNESDAY Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing that you have made and forgive the sins of all those who are penitent: create and make in us new and contrite hearts that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may receive from you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
