HOLY COMMUNION We welcome all confirmed members of the Anglican Church and visitors who are communicant members of other churches to share in the Holy Communion with us. Our practice is to have the Holy Communion by intinction (dipping of the wafer into the wine). If you are not partaking of the Communion, you are welcome to come forward to receive a prayer of blessing. Please keep your hands clasped to indicate that you are not receiving the Communion. CAR PARKING As there are limited parking lots within St Andrew s Cathedral, members may wish to park at carparks in close proximity to the Cathedral. Visitors who worship with us and park their cars in the Cathedral can collect a free pass from the Information Desk or from the Welcome Centre. PRAYER & MINISTRY If you would like to talk to someone or receive prayer ministry, in most Services this is offered either during or after a Service. Note the following: 7.00am After Service at Graham White Library, North Transept, Ground floor 8.00am After Service at prayer table, white tent 9.00am In Service 11.15am After Service at communion rails 11.30am In Service 5.00pm After Service at communion rails CHILDREN MINISTRY Each Service has special provisions for families with young children. Amen LECTIONARY READINGS Genesis 17:1-7, Romans 4:13-25 Mark 8:31-38 PSALM FOR 5PM Psalm 135 HYMNS 8.00am: CP475, CP390, Meekness and Majesty, CP am: CP475, CP390, Meekness and Majesty, CP pm: How Great Is Our God, O Praise The Name, Thank You For The Cross, I Need Thee Every Hour, HP4, HP96, Worthy of Worship Photo: Confirmation Service, 11 Feb
2 THE VICAR WRITES It has often been said that the Cathedral is a Mother Church and a City Church. Due to her historic nature, her central and strategic location, the sprawling nature of her buildings and grounds, her role can be clearly seen. After all, the bishops and clergy meet here every week, and significant diocesan or national events are held here. That said, we want to focus here on the Cathedral Community. This will be about spiritual influence, not historical or locational. In past years, SAC has been instrumental in planting new congregations across the city. She has also given generously to church building projects, especially in our deaneries. In this new season, what does the Lord seek to do in and through us? This is a question for us to pray over and certainly something I have been doing since joining the Cathedral in In 2018, can we pray over our role in helping parishes to develop, such as the Lat Krabang Anglican Church in Bangkok? Closer home, we are also reviewing how we can help our own church plants (i.e. Acts Centre) to have a firmer footing. Are there new fronts locally or in the deaneries which we should consider? What is important is to see our church planting efforts as an overflow of the spiritual and missional life of the SAC community, and not just the work of a few individuals. This means that SAC needs to go beyond initial evangelism and engage in nursing Vision 2020: Being a Church of Influence the new congregation to full maturity. Here is where the maturity of ministries in SAC herself becomes important. It is very much in the spirit of Anglican missions to raise a parish community within a society for longterm influence. Here is where many parts of SAC can eventually play a part as many ministries can be involved if our longterm goal is to help a congregation to grow into a mature parish. We can think of the choir, Alpha teams, Connect groups ministry team, medical missions and even our cafe team! Everyone can be missional in their service. We will also have a responsibility to fulfil our heritage role over properties which are uniquely the Cathedral s. It is a part of our Christian witness to be seen as responsible and having a sense of excellence. Society expects this of us and indeed, we are located centrally and visibly, right at the heart of this modern city. We have sufficient diversity in skills, expertise and passion in our congregation to ensure that every part of the Cathedral can rise up to our varied responsibilities. As a clergy, I need to focus on the ministry of the Word and prayer. But at the same time, I need to permit and empower those who are are able to carry out the work. Areas like our pipe organ, building facade, the quality of our tours, the bells, gathering, the displaying and storing of artefacts and the communications ministry, just to name a few, all have to be done well as an integral part of our community witness. In particular, the PCC is charged with assisting the Vicar in the care of temporal responsibilities and we will work together to ensure that we continue to do what we ought to do. 2
3 PRAYER HIGHLIGHTS WORLD Somalia Pray for peace and stability to return as Somalia emerges from over two decades of civil war, for President Mohamed Abdullahi and his team to institute a democratically elected government. Pray that God would grant the government victory over militants still engaging in guerrilla warfare. Pray for rain and relief from the current unprecedented drought, that the rivers would flow again, especially the main river Shabelle. Pray for the 6.2 million Somalis needing emergency aid of food and water and pray for protection against outbreak of disease. Pray for a mighty move of God across this nation bringing forgiveness, reconciliation and healing from the violence and atrocities of the past. Pray that more labourers and tentmakers would be released into the land and for many to respond to Christ s love. SINGAPORE Year of Prayer Ask God to release the spirit of intercession upon His Church, that there will be a strong commitment to fast and pray and seek His face, beginning with individual believers at the personal level seeking God in the place of daily secret devotion, building up to united corporate prayer at the local church, regional and national levels. Pray that the Church will, in brokenness of spirit, repent of our personal, corporate and national sins, we will turn away from our pride, self-will and self-reliance, and turn towards God in total dependence on Him, for the revival of our land. Celebration of Hope (17-19 May 2019) Pray for the CoH Steering, Executive and Working Committees to have God s wisdom, strength and favour as they move in tandem with God s purposes to prepare this platform for personal evangelism on a mass scale. Pray for skilled manpower, finances and all other resources to be raised and released for this great harvest event. Pray that all believers in Singapore will catch the vision of CoH and be a part of it. DIOCESE Church of the True Light Pray for the Vicar Revd Winston Tan, priests, parish worker and parish assistant that they will be led by the Spirit to position the church and prepare her for the move of God this year and in the years to come. CATHEDRAL Alpha Course (28 Feb, 7 March to 16 May) Pray that many pre-believers will be drawn to the invitation through our Alpha posters and cards, that they will come and be touched by the messages shared; that they will benefit much from the group discussions. Pray for the organising committee to plan well for each meeting; for the group leaders to be welcoming and and Spirit-led in their facilitation of group discussions. Michael Card Teaching Seminar & Public Concert (2 & 3 March) Pray for Michael Card as he prepares to teach on the theme of Lament, that his teaching will deepen our understanding of suffering and strengthen us to face life s many challenges. Pray that as he shares the songs the Lord had inspired him to write, at the public concert, they will minister powerfully to us and inspire faith and trust in God. COLLECT FOR ASH WEDNESDAY Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing that you have made and forgive the sins of all those who are penitent: create and make in us new and contrite hearts that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may receive from you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. PLEASE PRAY FOR THE SICK Annie Dang, Khor Seow Hong, Marjorie Lau, Nancy Li, Barbara Rayney, Rene Tan, Joy Brett, Doris Proctor, Anna Lim, Albert Lim, Janet Lim, Ana Pelaez, Lim Soon Chye and Nelson Low. Members who know them are encouraged to visit and pray with them. 3
