2 Prayerful path ways for private reflecon Bethany grounds provide spaces where individuals can touch into the wonder and beauty of creaon realising the love and care of the Creator. St. Theresa s Garden The garden invites us to enjoy the delight of a pond (home to fish and frogs), flowerbeds, trees and very friendly squirrels and chickadees. The tradi%onal, devo%onal Way of the Cross is next to the pond. Across the path is a beau%ful gro:o to Our Lady of Fa%ma. Labyrinth The labyrinth is a walking prayer, a sacred tool for medita%on and reflec%on used in many religious tradi%ons. It is a symbol for the sacred journey of life. The labyrinth, located on the front lawn beside the fountain, is mown into the grass. Contemplave Trail The trail opens up the heart of the wooded area and invites us to be immersed in nature s drama of birth, life, death and new life. It is the home to many plants, animals and birds, which cradles a lake in the center. Benches along the way are an invita%on to sit and marvel. 4 September Centering Prayer "Be s%ll and know that I am God." Psalm 46:10 Two Fridays a month, from 10:00 to 12:00, the Centering Prayer Community meets to listen to the word of God in Scripture through the prac%ce of Lec%o Divina (Divine Reading) which leads them into contempla%ve prayer. The source of Centering Prayer is the Indwelling Trinity. Its prac%ce consists in responding to the call of the Holy Spirit to consent to the Divine presence and ac%on in our lives. AIer the prayer with Scripture and the prac%ce of Centering, we have a %me of instruc%on on Centering Prayer and Spirituality which includes conversa%on about living the Chris%an Life. 5 15 Spiritual Direcon Spiritual direc%on is a ministry in all religious tradi%ons and faiths. It helps you pay a:en%on to the movements of God in the everyday events of your life and calls you to grow in rela%onship with God, self, others and the created universe. Spiritual direc%on is a confiden%al, one-on-one encounter las%ng about an hour. The goal of spiritual accompaniment is not to tell a person what to do but to help one become more aware of God s presence and ac%vity in one s life, with a view to making choices in fidelity to that awareness. It is a way of providing support for the spiritual journey. Claire Mac Neil, CSM is available to anyone who wishes to journey with someone as they search for the many ways God is present and has been present in their personal journey. Claire is a trained spiritual director and has years of experience giving retreats and helping people journey in the mystery of God. In this, the Year of Mercy, we will be praying and reflec%ng on the material contained in the Video Series by Sister Elizabeth Davis, RSM en%tled GOD WHO IS MERCY AND JUSTICE. The days will consist of prayer, reflec%on, some sharing and ritual around the theme of Mercy. There is opportunity for spiritual direc%on if you so desire. 6 Facilitator: Claire MacNeil, csm is a member of Bethany Center Staff. She is an experienced Spiritual Director with a background in spirituality, teaching, music and liturgy. Cost: $25/day Pre-registra%on required by calling October 2016 Praccing Compassion Sessions will be based on Frank Rogers, Jr's 2015 book, Prac%cing Compassion. Over four weeks we will learn skills which deepen our connec%on to God's compassion, renew the life within us, and increase our capacity to be instruments of God's compassion towards others. We will begin by prac%cing compassion towards ourselves - oien the most difficult person in our lives. From this base, we will then be more able to be compassionate towards others. Each week, you will have new exercises to prac%ce, so please allow yourself three onehour periods between sessions. This is soulwork, and as such, can be both transforma%ve and difficult. The leader would like to meet individually with those who plan to a:end before the program begins. March 2016 Guided Retreat March 21-29, 2017 VIRTUES COME OF AGE The focus of this retreat is for people in the second half of life. The content presumes that individuals have spent a good por%on of their lives seeking to live the gospel. The retreat seeks to help them reflect upon their lives and see how these virtues have come of age over the years and what the signs of those virtues are in people's lives. Each conference would consider one such virtue, such as wonder, freedom, restlessness, humor, balance, joy and others. Director: Fr. Joseph Juknialis is a re%red priest of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He has spent his en%re life in various aspects of parish ministry and has also taught homile%cs to seminarians and permanent deacon candidates at St. Francis de Sales Seminary in Milwaukee. His two recent publica%ons include Of Poets, Prophets, and Preachers, a spirituality and theology on preaching, and also Easter Fire, a book of biblical background and preaching reflec%ons for the weekdays of the Easter Season co-authored with Bishop Richard J. 7 13 February 2016 Bethany Guided Retreat February 12-17, 2017 Wholehearted Living - Wholehearted Loving St. John of the Cross tells us that, "in the evening of our life we will be judged on love." This retreat tries to take this saying seriously. We will talk about obstacles and opportuni%es to growing in greater love of God, neighbor and self. We will reflect on whole-hearted prayer, reconcilia%on and a life growing in compassion. Director: Michael Crosby, OFM, is a Capuchin Franciscan. He lives in community with other friars in a downtown Milwaukee parish that serves the urban poor, homeless and marginalized. Michael has been a pioneer among Catholics in promo%ng corporate reform through socially responsible inves%ng. He was influen%al in gemng Catholics to work with the Protestant and Jewish communi%es in this effort at Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR) He has wri:en 17 books, his latest books have received awards from Catholic Press Associa%on of Canada and the United States. Thursdays, October 6, 13, 20, 27 Leader - Rev. Sue Channen is the Rector of the Parish of Three Harbours, based in An%gonish. Ordained priest in 2010, aier a career in banking, she has been the Anglican priest here since December 1, 2013, with three congrega%ons in her care. Her ministry also includes hospital chaplaincy and outreach to St. FX University and she is a regular member of the Centering Prayer Group at Bethany. She is married to Bob MacMillan, and they have two sons and two grandsons. She studied with Frank Rogers Jr in 2012/13 and led workshops in this material in 2013/14. Rev. Sue uses these techniques in her ministry and in her own life on a daily basis. Time: 7:00 pm 9:00 pm Cost: $30. for four evenings with snack break, plus the cost of the book. Reading this book is a spiritually cleansing experience that won't leave you the same. of Jesus, to be lived in our lives. The consecrated life is to effec%vely inspire all members of the Church to fulfill the du%es of their Chris%an voca%on. Director: Gerald Wiesner, OMI was born in Macklin, Sask. and was ordained as an Oblate of Mary Immaculate in Bishop Wiesner holds a Licen%ate in Theology from St. Paul University in O:awa and pursued graduate studies at Universi%es in Canada and the US. He has been a professor of Theology and was involved in Forma%on work in the Oblate Community. AIer being ordained Bishop he established a Lay Forma%on Program as well as renewal ini%a%ves in parishes and regions in the Diocese of Prince George, B.C. In re%rement he is con%nuing his mission of faith development of people by giving retreats and workshops. Facilitator: Teri Brean-Arsenault is a re%red Art and Special Educa%on teacher. She facilitated a successful Book Study last year and is excited to be making two wonderful books available for reflec%on and discussion this year. 10 March 2017 Retreat Weekend: Gateways to the Divine: An Explora1on of Unity Two Jungian Analysts will explore the interconnec%on of all things, the life force that dwells in everything, and how to experience this sacred unity. This workshop will be a balance of presenta%on, group discussion, focused exercises, retreat %me and sharing. The main inten%on of the weekend is to deepen par%cipants ways of connec%ng with the Divine. educator. She pursues a serious studio prac%ce and has exhibited her work extensively in Canada, as well as in the United States and Europe. Currently she teaches as regular part-%me faculty at the Nova Sco%a College of Art and Design University. Beaty Popescu is a Jungian Analyst with a private prac%ce in Halifax, and has given many Jungian workshops and lectures in various large centers across Canada.
