2 Kindness Outreach for First Day of School The first day of school can be confusing for new students, parents and faculty as children get off the buses and get into new habits. We have a team of people that will go to Broadmoor Elementary on Thursday morning, August 6 and help them get to the correct class with the correct bus information for their teachers. This is a great outreach to our neighborhood school, and they are always so appreciative. If you are interested in participating, please contact Eddie Manes at or emanes@broadmoormethodist.org. You can also contact Jenola Duke at Outreach Fair Are you interested in what Broadmoor is doing in our community, state, and internationally? Please come to Room 3 in the Youth Building between worship services on Sunday, August 16 to learn more at our Outreach Fair. You will also have the opportunity to sign up for our second annual Day of Compassion, to be held on Saturday, September 26. 戀氀攀猀猀椀渀最 A special BACK TO SCHOOL BLESSING will take place on Sunday, August 2 during each worship service. Teachers and students of all ages are invited to bring their school backpacks to church for a blessing as the new school begins. Parents are encouraged to bring their children so that they may experience the support of the congregation as they begin a new academic year. Invite your child s teacher, bus driver, your neighbor, college roommate, or any teachers/professors you know to this special event! What a difference your presence and support will make in the lives of our local school faculties, staff, and students as they see and understand the importance that their faith community places on education. Remember to pass on this blessing to the students at our partner school, Broadmoor Elementary by bringing much needed school supplies with you to worship on August 2. School Supply Drive for Broadmoor Elementary On Sunday, August 2 we will be celebrating our partnership with Broadmoor Elementary with a special communion offering and by collecting school supplies for the school. Please bring some of the following newly purchased items that morning to your worship service: school supply list composition books (black and white marble cover) #2 pencils glue sticks lined wide-ruled loose leaf paper Kleenex paper towels Crayola crayons (24 count) pocket folders with prongs dry erase makers (8 or 10 per box) Fiskar student scissors In addition to the school supplies listed above, we are also collecting gently used or new school uniforms (khaki pants, burgundy shirts) and backpacks during the month of July. Bring all donations to Connection Café or the Children s Building. School Supply lists for Broadmoor Elementary can be picked up at most stores such as Target, Walmart, and Office Depot. Office Depot offers an opportunity for a percentage of your purchase amount to be donated to any designated school, both by ordering online or in the store.

3 Welcome Our Newest Members L VE John Lacy We will meet in the Connection Café at 8:00 am on Saturday, July 11 and travel to Hope United Methodist Church on Evangeline Street, and will then team up with their members to visit two Laundromats and give the gift of laundry and fellowship. We will return to the church no later than 11:00 am. This is a great beginning to a partnership in ministry with another local church. If you are interested in coming, please contact Eddie Manes at or emanes@broadmoormethodist.org. New Labyrinth for Spiritual Formation Ministry Through the generosity of one of Broadmoor UMC s faithful members, the ministry of spiritual formation has recently acquired a room-sized portable canvas labyrinth. The five-circuit, 18-foot labyrinth will easily fit into almost any classroom on BUMC s campus and will be used in small group studies, retreats, Sunday School classes (as requested), and in other ways to promote and encourage exploration of prayer. The labyrinth is small enough to travel easily, so we will be using it both on and off campus. A labyrinth orientation and training will be scheduled for the fall, but if you are interested in learning more about the labyrinth before then, please get in touch with Rev. Shannon Sandifer (ssandifer@broadmoormethodist.org). Cynthia Cowell Safe Sanctuary Certification Class to Work with Children and Youth Do you ever work with children or youth? Do you work or bring trunk or treat at Fall Festival? Then you need to be Safe Sanctuary certified! Join the Seekers Sunday school class on July 19 at 9:45 am for Safe Sanctuary training and a presentation on several opportunities for service in our children and youth areas. You will also have an opportunity to fill out all necessary paperwork and sign up for volunteer opportunities. Keep in mind that if you help with our annual Fall Festival, we have recently changed our policy to require any volunteer at the Fall Festival to be Safe Sanctuary certified.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! There are lots of ways you can help: Serve as a Reading or Math Friend or both: You will be matched with a K-2nd grade student to help master reading or math skills. Reading Friends work minutes weekly and Math Friends work 1 hour weekly. Training is provided. These are essential skills for life long learning and you will make a new friend as well. Serve as a Reading Readiness Friend for a Pre-K Student: Work 20 minutes weekly. Training is provided and you will help this young student get a great start. Serve as a Library Helper: Help keep the books in circulation by re-shelving library books.. You can sign up for a time that is convenient to you. Training is provided. Serve as a Kindergarten Lunch Helper: Help Kindergarten students learn the cafeteria routine including the traffic patterns, putting food on their trays, scanning their fingers on the computer, how to punch the straws into the plastic milk pouches, and disposing of their trash. BUMC ESL (English as a Second Language) Classes Begin August 17 Lew Ward, long time ESL teacher, encourages others to serve as teachers: It is very rewarding. Our students are so appreciative of the help we give. I ve enjoyed teaching for 10 years. It enables me to serve in a way that fits me, and it is fun to do. Our classes meet on Mondays and Thursdays from 7:00-8:30 pm. Teachers work weekly on either Mondays or Thursdays. Training is provided. English is the only language needed for teachers, although our students speak a variety of languages. If you know someone who might benefit from these FREE classes, please pick up a flyer at the Connection Café or church office and give it to a future student. Classes begin Thursday, August 17 and follow the EBR Parish Public School calendar. For more information, contact Jenola Duke at or jenoladuke@cox.net. Bicycles for Southeast Ministries Homeless and Walking Clients Rev. David Chisham, pastor of First Christian Church, has a ministry of refurbishing bicycles for those without transportation and will provide them to Southeast Ministries for $10 each.
