1 April 4, 2013 Volume 19, Issue 3 The Beacon The Official Newsletter of Broadmoor United Methodist Church Rev. Fred Wideman, Senior Pastor Mollylea Drive Baton Rouge, Louisiana (225) The Canyon of WHY On Sunday, April 14, Dr. Frank Campbell will be preaching the sermon in all worship services on The Canyon of Why: Coping with Suicide and Other Crises. There will be a free follow-up seminar from 3:00 5:00 p.m. in Room 205 of the Adult Building called Further into the Canyon of Why: Suicide and Its Aftermath. Dr. Campbell is the former Executive Director of the Baton Rouge Crisis Intervention Center, and his work with survivors and victims of trauma has been featured in three Discovery channel documentaries. He is also a faithful member of our church and is currently active in consulting and reaching out to survivors and first responders. You can read more about his work in Suicidology at COMMUNIT Y GARAGE SALE Saturday, April 20 7:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M. Broadmoor UMC Gym Open Air Ministries Day April 28 On Sunday, April 28, we will have a churchwide drive to donate the following items for our area homeless through Open Air Ministries: T-shirts (new or gently used), shoes (tennis shoes and sandals) and mosquito repellent. Did you know that many of our homeless live in wooded areas? Spring and summer brings out the mosquitoes, and repellent can really be a relief to many in our homeless community. Also that morning there will be a Q & A about Open Air Ministries offered to our Sunday School classes at 9:45, sponsored by the Seekers class in Room 201 of the Adult Building. Pastor Joe Moore and other volunteers will be present to share stories, pictures, video and answer questions about how the homeless are being served through Open Air Ministries. All Sunday school classes are welcome! High School Senior Recognition Sunday On Sunday, May 5 we will honor the high school graduating Class of The graduates will be recognized at the 11:00 a.m. Sanctuary service, where the John Edd Harper Scholarship will be awarded. After church the graduates and their families will be honored at a special luncheon in the Gym/Casual Worship Center. If you have a senior who has not received a letter of invitation to the luncheon, please contact Donna Shaler at
2 Dios Los Bendiga There is a beautiful new roof on our Sanctuary. Looking from the outside, two-thirds of what you see is roof. The new one is quite an improvement. It takes a dare devil or a circus trapeze artist to hang shingles on our roof. But the men who are working do not seem to be dare devils or circus performers. They are just men. They are Hispanic or Latino or Mexican. Most of them probably do not speak English. I have tried to speak to them. They seem to understand my smile, but not much more. Now I am arming myself with some new words. The new words or phrase is Dios los bendiga which roughly translated means, God bless you. I got the phrase from Henry Ramos, one of our members. The complexion of Baton Rouge is changing every day. The number of non white, non-english speaking people abounds. Many of these come to our ESL (English as a Second Language) classes. But for those who have not yet made it to one of our classes and are not yet aware of a friendly Christ centered people, learn these words: Dios los bendiga; God bless you. We are asking for volunteers to assist with hospitality at the Garage Sale on Saturday, April 20. Hundreds of people will be on our campus that are not church members, and we want to make them feel at home! Many of the shoppers come looking for deals in this tough economy, and a warm smile and inviting heart go a long way. Jobs include handing out Broadmoor Bucks and candy to children, helping people carry purchased items to their cars, handing out water, and just being nice! If you are interested in serving in this way, please contact Eddie Manes at or emanes@broadmoormethodist.org. The Garage Sale is April 20 from 7:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m., and we would like to have two shifts of hospitality (7:00 10:30 and 10:30 1:00).

April Prayer Focus April is garage sale month at BUMC. Pray that through this ministry we will shine our light for the Lord, not only to each other but our community. Also keep in your prayers continued focus on Bible study and fellowship that leads to spiritual transformation. Keep in your prayers, too, all those dealing with relationship problems. May God send his healing power to all in need. Curt Bailey April Prayer Practice: Music Larry Peacock, in Openings, writes, Music has long been seen as a bridge between heaven and earth. Music can connect us with the larger universe, all of creation, and with the Divine. This month spend time daily (or at least weekly) playing music, singing, or playing your favorite musical instrument (even if you aren t perfect!). What are the first songs you remember from childhood? What is your favorite hymn or praise song, one that is your touchstone for connecting with God. Spend time letting music be your prayer. Ivy Mincey
4 HOLY CHOW Jan White gave us very interesting information about Southeast Ministries, from its inception until present day. We learned that our own Broadmoor UMC plays a major role in this ministry, and that there are 20 other area churches which participate in running this valuable resource. It was quite an enlightening presentation. On Wednesday, April 10, James Linden Hogg and his dad, Jim Hogg will present our program. We are looking forward to having a fun afternoon. Our volunteer chefs will be grilling hamburgers, and we will have all the fixings, chips, and dessert for $6. Punch will be served during the Meet & Greet time starting at 11:30 a.m. in the Casual Worship Center. If you need to make reservations for yourself and your friends, please call the church office before noon on Monday, April 8. Looking forward to seeing you there. Kidz Praise is collecting the following items for the Waterfront Rescue Mission in Pensacola, Florida: Toiletries Facial Tissue Blankets Twin Sheet Sets Pillows Towels/Washcloths Fun & Games Night Writing Supplies Men s Clothing Healthy Snacks Bring the items to Dona Lusted s office in the Music Building by Thursday, April 18. April 18 is the date for the Third Thursday Fun and Games Night in Room 101 of the Adult Building from 6:30-9:00 p.m. The group is currently enjoying playing the domino games of Spinner, Mexican Train, and Chicken Foot. If you have a favorite board or card game you would like to teach, please bring it. Scrabble players are also needed. Coffee, soda, and punch are provided, and a snack to share is always welcome. Please call Jerry or Margerite Hammons at if you would a ride to the church. Prime Time Reading Program B r o a d m o o r E l e m e n t a r y School received a grant from the LA Endowment for the Humanities to fund a Prime Time Reading Program. Twenty Spanish speaking families, parents, and children attended weekly sessions at the school for 6 weeks. Dinner was served, parents and children heard stories (in English and Spanish), learned the importance of reading at home, took home books to read, and discussed the next session. The program ended on April 2 with a Mexican Fiesta. BUMC provided dinner to the parents and children attending the Prime Time Reading Program. Servers were: Jerry Hammons, Margerite Hammons, Martha Anderson, Beverly Hammond, and Jenola Duke. Interfaith Federation s 23rd Annual Sounds of CommUNITY Concert The 23rd Annual Sounds of CommUNITY Concert will feature a World Premiere by composer Robert Kyr with lyrics from dialogues on peace held in Baton Rouge. Sunday, May 5 at 4:00 p.m. at Broadmoor Baptist Church (9755 Goodwood Blvd). Did you know? Rev. Phil Woodland and Frank D. McArthur were among the founders of the Interfaith Federation of Greater Baton Rouge during the 1980 s. In honor of their and the other founders vision for peace, the Federation has commissioned an original choral composition, Waging Peace by Robert Kyr. We pray this musical composition not only provides a lasting tribute to the founders of the Federation, but inspires our community TODAY to wage peace!
