Men and women who served and sacrificed to keep us free to enjoy the blessings of a country dedicated to preserving all of our rights including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The adage that Freedom isn t free is not just a cute aphorism; real people paid a high and sometimes ultimate price for us. They paid and their families paid for us too. Expressing a heartfelt Thank you for your service! to every veteran and those currently serving is the very least we can do to acknowledge our debt of gratitude. Let them and their family members know you appreciate them as well. The community of St. Sharbel Parish is particularly thankful for and proud of our deceased and living parishioners currently serving in the United States Armed Forces: Thank you for your service and May God keep you safe! LITURGICALLY SPEAKING Today s Gospel is the most quoted verses to explain the role of Peter and the ministry of the Pope as the successor to the ministry and call of Peter. The role of the Pope is to make sure the teachings of Jesus are handed down through history accurately and when there is division and confusion over what to believe, to keep unity through safeguarding the correct belief that was held by the Apostles. From the very beginning there were false beliefs, some were misunderstandings, some were grave in the error, insisting that Jesus was not the Son of God, was not crucified, and not brought back from the dead. There were many opinions on the true identity of Jesus and there still are. Through the Holy Spirit, Simon was able to give the deepest and most profound answer, You are the Messiah, Son of the Living God. Jesus changed Simon s name at this point to Peter, which means rock. Jesus entrusted to Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you declare bound on earth shall be bound in heaven; whatever you declare loosed on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Jesus had also said the jaws of death shall not prevail against it (the church). These promises of protection took on deeper meanings as the church grew, developed, and spread throughout the world. The role of Peter has taken on many shapes and positions. Not every Pope holding the keys was of respectable character, just as every baptized Christian, is not always of a respectable character. We, the church of Peter, have the character of Peter, a man who, one day, expressed the deepest of faith and trust, and the next day, was rebuked for listening to Satan; one day kissing the feet of Jesus in humility, the next day acting proud and haughty. These were his personal traits reflecting His humanity. Our weaknesses do not nullify what we believe to be true. Peter even personally denied he knew Jesus. Peter s redeeming quality is that after hearing the rooster crow, he wept, repented, and was brave enough and through faith, to pray in the upper room to receive the Holy Spirit. Jesus does work through flawed humans, but in the case of Peter, when the answer to the confusion of what to believe, the Holy Spirit does make it known through Peter. Yes, Jesus did give His Body to eat, and it is Real Food. Yes, He did give His Blood to Drink, and it is really His Blood. Yes, He is the Messiah, the Son of God. Receiving the Holy Eucharist is our Divine connection to Christ for the forgiveness of sins and for eternal life. Death is gnawing at the churches door, but it will not prevail against us. Repentance is our salvation just like Peter s. Trust The Lord! He will not fail you! PASTOR S CORNER Dear Parishioners & Visitors, I would like to thank Sub Deacon Mike for the great job he did teaching the new altar servers who serve at the 9:30 AM Liturgy on Sunday. Just a reminder that our Religious Education Program is held on Sundays from 10:30 AM to 11:20 AM. Please help us keep your children safe by being on time and waiting in the hall. This will eliminate congestion as families arrive who will be attending the 11:30 AM liturgy after their children are dismissed from class. It is a requirement for you to attend Mass with your children every Sunday, either at 9:30 am or 11:30 am. Thank you to all of our parents who are continuing to make our program a priority by bringing your children every week for class. IN GRATITUDE A special thank you to Sabath, Samia, Khouloud, Rima, Racquel and Amanda, the MYO, the Young Adults, those who helped direct traffic and parking, Elodie and her helpers who furnished the balloons, did crafts and face painting, to all who made the annual Trunk or Treat an incredible celebration for the children and parents. Without your commitment, this joyful event would not have been possible. We are very grateful to Fr. Francisco and the staff at St. Matthias Church for their hospitality and receiving us with open hearts. You are all greatly appreciated and your labor of love is acknowledged. May the Lord Jesus Christ shower His choicest blessings upon you! JOB WELL DONE AND HOSPITALITY PAR EXCELLENCE!!! STEWARDSHIP God has made us stewards of the rich resources that were given - and are given anew each day. Our offerings and our pledges support the Church s mission and ministries throughout the year to come. We give, knowing that all that we have received has come from God, who will continue to provide. We give, knowing that there is still much to be done as witnesses to God s goodness. We put our hearts into our offerings of time, talent, and treasure as signs of our trust and faithfulness. The widow who gave without hesitation reminds us of the risks we are free to take with confidence that God will take care of us, through times of plenty and times of want, all along our journey through life. Please be sure to pray and to consider making your payments toward your pledge. If you have not had an opportunity to make your personal response to the Capital Campaign, please consider doing so. Again, thank you for your generosity. May God continue to bless us with all that we need, and more. Yours in Christ, Chorbishop Alfred REP NEWS FOCUS ON JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL God's day to all my fellow Maronite parishioners at St. Sharbel, I am so very excited to receive your children into the Jr. High REP Class (7th & 8th grade.) When we are all present we have 13 students in our section. I thank you, the parents, for allowing us to supplement your own in-home instruction, in both word and deed, with our Maronite centered study. We will be focusing on the Rites of Christian Initiation (Baptism, Communion, and Confirmation) with an emphasis of the Corporal Works of Mercy and the Spiritual Works of Social Justice. We will also be participating in putting the Gospel (Matthew chapters 5-7 & 25:31-46 ) of our Lord, Savior, and Redeemer Jesus the Christ, into real life application through prayer and practice at the Haven of Hope Community Outreach in Detroit as well as being on the front line as Rosary prayer warriors at the abortion mills located on 8 Mile Road this coming year. Again on behalf of Chorbishop Alfred, thank you for your support and dedication to your own child's catechism and their consistent and timely presence in our St. Sharbel REP. Keith Khalil
