Zechariah and Elizabeth were dealing with timeless and universal human problems; this particular problem was their relationship with others. Despite their stature in the religious circles of being blameless and just, they still were not completely happy because of a certain stigma. In their society, to not have a child was an embarrassment, a disgrace. There is reason to believe they did their best to not let it bother them but I am sure when they heard of another birth among their relatives and neighbors, and even at the synagogue or temple there was some pain. Zechariah and Elizabeth remained faithful and loyal in their service to the Lord, even though at times life did not seem fair to them. Their faithfulness was rewarded in their old age. Elizabeth was filled with praise for the Lord when she discovered she was with child because God had made what was impossible, possible, He had removed her feelings of shame. We have to remember the same holds true for us. We forget what our own history is; we lose touch with how precious our life and the lives of others are. We are being prepared for an eternal destiny. Old age is not preparing for the end. Old age is getting ready to embrace a new eternal life, a life where every reproach, every failure, every fault, is removed. There are stages in our life when we feel sterile, almost lifeless, where we think we are losing our ability to climb any more mountains. Our self-esteem is at an all time low. We must first remain faithful. Let the angels, let the Holy Spirit, find you in the holy temple, offering praise, so you can hear about another way to climb the mountain of life, to become more fruitful. Let your heart conceive the freedom that comes from His love for us. Let the Holy Spirit give us a new concept, a new vision for all eternity through joining our humanity with His divinity. Zechariah s doubt became mute to safeguard the listeners. Being mute, they knew he had a vision. Being mute, the listeners were prepared for the preaching of John, the Baptizer. CONGRATULATIONS! WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Congratulations to Vito and Char Fortuna as they celebrate their 45th Wedding Anniversary! Congratulations also to Fadi and Lisa Yacoub as they celebrate their 12th Wedding Anniversary! May our Lord bless these couples as they continue to provide witness to the love of God by their commitment to each other and to their family! Again, thank you for your generosity. YEAR OF MERCY TO CLOSE Sunday, November 20, 2016 is the official close of the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy as declared by Pope Francis. During this past year, the community of St. Sharbel Church experienced the love and mercy of God in many ways. We have known firsthand His mercy through our period of transition and of moving forward,not by sight but by faith in Him. We were blessed to receive the Holy Relics of our Patron Saint Sharbel several times and witnessed our Lord s mercy extended to those who came to pray seeking mercy. We shared together in a Bible Study exploring the topic of mercy and forgiveness. We continued to expand our pastoral care to the sick and homebound, with members from our Worship Committee going to visit and pray with those in need. We were privileged to see the mercy of God firsthand through answered prayer and miraculous healings! We pledge to continue to live out the Corporal and Spiritual acts of Mercy beyond this year. Live mercifully today, and every day until the Year of Mercy ends. Then, in your heart and in your home, declare another year of mercy. Declare that your lifetime be a Life of Mercy. Let us pray for the Holy Spirit to help us make the practice of mercy more ordinary in our everyday lives of discipleship and service. May the closing of the Door of mercy be yet another opening of the door of mercy in our hearts. Join us as we give thanks and praise, for God s mercy endures forever! May God continue to bless us with all that we need, and more.
