On Saturday, October 28, 2017 St. Sharbel will be hosting our Gala Event, An Evening Under The Harvest Moon! to be held at the Palazzo Grande. What a great way to enjoy the company of friends and parishioners. All proceeds go toward the St. Sharbel Capital Campaign and, as in years past, a percent will be donated to a charity. This year the charitable organization that will be the recipient is Orchards Children s Services, Southeast Michigan Region s premiere foster care, child welfare and adoption agency, dedicated to providing high quality professional services to children, youth and families in Michigan. Additional details will be in upcoming bulletins. LITURGICALLY SPEAKING The story was told of a Catholic priest and an atheist who was a manager of a prestigious soap company. One beautiful evening they were going for an evening walk. While they were walking through the middle of a big town, the soap manager began to speak about God. He abruptly said there is no God, there is no Christianity and even there are no Christians at all. He said that the Christianity that Jesus preached is a grand failure now a days. That terrorism, violence and injustices are multiplying day by day. The number of divorces and separations are beyond control in the so-called Christian countries. Is it not a sign of the absence of God? Therefore there is no God at all. The priest did not say a word until they saw a group of children playing in the mud and dirt. Then the priest turned towards the soap manager and asked how is your soap company going. He all of a sudden replied, our soap is the best sold and the best in quality that is available in the country. I am so proud of my company. But the priest responded in an unusual manner. He said I can never imagine that your soap has superior quality. If it is so, those boys playing in mud and dirt will never have been dirty. What foolishness are you talking about the soap manager asked with a bit of anger, our soap is good only when they apply it and have a good bath. Then they will be clean. They are dirty not because of the quality of the soap but because they failed to apply it and have a bath. This is so with God, the priest said, we need to apply Him. It is not because God doesn t exist that the people are awful and there is bad, but because they do not apply God in life. Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation of India once said, I love Christ; I love reading the Bible but I do not love Christians, because they do not practice what Jesus taught. We are the signs, the symbols and proof of the existence of God. All those things and the creatures that God created proclaim His reality. Unless and until we apply God there will be discord and violence, division and separation. However, God is still working and active. It is always a matter of great joy to see that churches are filled with people on Sundays and feast days. It shows that a lot of people, families, sons and daughters are specially chosen, invited, and blessed by God to be there at the altar. Remember the words of Jesus: "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.( John: 6:44). As we are the signs and symbols of God s presence, never forget to apply God in life. Have a blessed week! Dear Saint Sharbel family: On this final weekend of August, we celebrate the 13 th Sunday of Pentecost. We continue our reading from St. Luke s Gospel until the end of the Pentecost season. On a beautiful Sunday afternoon last week, the community of St. Sharbel came together to celebrate the Divine Sunday Liturgy with a wonderful picnic! Many hands make light the work and with all the help from wonderful parishioners we had a super afternoon. Thank you to all who volunteered for set-up (boy, did they work up a sweat in that heat). They had the ground ready for the fun and activities of the day in record time. Thank you to all the kitchen help who planned, purchased and prepared the food (can you imagine grilling in that heat putting the food together and serving!)...thank you, thank you, thank you, so very much! Also a special thank you to Eclipse Burger! Many of our college students have already returned to their campuses. Most of our area high schools have already begun classes for the year. Preparations are well underway with our Religious Education Program. Parish life dramatically picks up after the Feast of the Assumption. We ask God s continued blessings on all our parish education ministries. Thank you to the 274 households who have already responded to the St. Sharbel Capital Campaign. If you have not had an opportunity to make your personal pledge, please consider doing so as soon as possible. St. Sharbel Church depends upon your continued generosity. Let us remember in prayer all those who are traveling at this time of year and our college students returning to their schools. A new season is upon us! May God continue to bless us with all that we need, and more! Sincerely yours in Christ, Chorbishop Alfred Badawi REP NEWS RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM REGISTRATION Registrations are now being accepted for the REP. You can register your child following each Sunday Liturgy. The REP classes will begin on Sunday, September 17, 2017 and is open to all children from pre-school up to and including high-school. REMINDERS TO PARENTS Religious Education is held every Sunday from 10:30 AM to 11:20 AM. Attending Mass each week with your child is mandatory! Children must arrive to class on time and be picked up after class on time. Please do not distract them at the window. Please do not congregate in the hallways of the REP classrooms. It is very disruptive to the teacher and the children. If your child has to miss a class, please call and let us know before Sunday if possible. Please instruct your child and reinforce appropriate behavior for the classroom and for Church. No running, loud voices, or other disruptive behavior. Do not leave your child unattended to wander throughout the building. PASTOR S CORNER Go over any homework with your child. Make sure they bring their books to class. If books are lost, they are $10 each. On Sunday, September 24th we shall celebrate Catechetical Sunday and commission the new catechists at Mass.
