3 November Sunday Worship at Cross Winds Sunday, November 5 On this All Saint s Day we remember those persons, family members and friends no longer alive, who played a role in blessing us and helping our faith to develop. You are invited to bring 5x7 or 4x6 photographs of your saints as we recreate a great cloud of witnesses See the beginning of the newsletter for more information. Our Scripture is Matthew 5:1-12 in which Jesus describes the blessed life and saintly life in some surprising ways. Sunday, November 12 Malachi 1: 6-14 Excellence Honors God The prophet Malachi asks Have you decided to give God your best in life - with your skills and talents, with your job? Have you decided to live excellent in your relationships and in your spiritual growth Sunday, November 19 Thanksgiving Sunday is here and we celebrate with great worship and our annual potluck Feast. There is one worship service at 9:30 AM followed by the meal. Our 3 rd grade students will receive their Bibles at this service. Pledges for the 2018 budget will be received at this service. The message is... Where s my pie? based on Luke 17: Sunday, November 26 Random Acts of Kingdom Kindness based on Matthew 25:31-46 Jesus describes the importance of treating the people around us with kindness. A Charge Conference is scheduled for Tuesday, November 21. Our District Superintendent Susan Nienaber has authorized Cross Winds to hold a church conference Tuesday November 21 at 6:30 PM for the purpose of setting the 2018 compensations for pastors Rev. Mike Dyrdal and Licensed Local Pastor Rachel Deveraux. Rev. Shirley Duncanson will be the presiding elder. The regularly scheduled Cross Winds Board meeting will immediately follow this charge conference. Pastor Mike All Saints Day Sunday, Nov. 5th On Sunday, November 5, you are invited to bring a photo or two of some of the saints who encouraged and influenced your life. These photos of deceased family members and acquaintances will be added to our Stadium of Saints for display in the sanctuary during worship. In this way we remember them, and say thank you to God for their influence on our lives, based on the imagery of Hebrews 12: 1-2. Photos can be either professional portraits or snap shots, and no larger than 4 x 6. The photos can be placed in the box at the entrance to the sanctuary on Oct. 29 and/or Nov. 5. Photos may also be brought forward during the opening hymn on Nov. 5. Please put your name on the back of the photos. After the worship service you may pick up your photos. As people with Alzheimer s disease and other dementias progress in their journey and the ability to use words is lost, families need new ways to connect. Join us to explore how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer s, learn to decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia, and identify strategies to help you connect and communicate at each stage of the disease. 5 Things you may want to know about... Giving Update Giving through September 2017 was $412,000. This is 73% of our 2017 Budget and 3.2% better than last year. While this is good news compared to prior years our analysis of the giving is still indicating that we may need an additional giving in order to break even for As part of a plan to reduce this anticipated shortfall we initiated a Leadership Giving Challenge to those in our leadership positions in our ministries which has yielded an additional $12,600 in giving. We have been encouraged by the results of this initiative decreasing our anticipated shortfall. The Finance Committee believes that our shortfall gap is $10 to $15,000. We still believe that we should continue to pray and consider if you are called also to help us close our anticipated gap. To the extent that you would like to make an additional contribution or commitment this year, please reach out to our Financial Secretary, Steve Weeks so that we can consider that in our planning. Thank you so much for your generous support of the ministries at Cross Winds. Looking for a few good hands to Feed My Starving Children Join a group on: Saturday, November 4, Turn hunger into hope with your two hands at Feed My Starving Children. There are trees to put together, wreaths to hang, and much more. Come lend a hand and have a Fa La La La Good Time. Shalom: Contemplative Practice Group Sunday mornings at 9:45 am - Choir room - lower level Practices will include gentle, mindful movement to support relaxation, a time of shared silence for Centering Prayer and Meditation, a reading from Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church s Pastor Sally Howell Johnson s book, The Practicing Life: Simple Acts. Sacred Living, and a brief discussion. The intention of the group is, in Pastor Johnson s words from her introduction, to help us see the Holy in our every-day, working, living, playing lives, to stay awake to the movement of the Sacred, and to take the time to reflect on these experiences by practicing staying awake, being present, paying attention, being in community, and living our lives with the deep knowing that we are a part of a web that is so intricate it is pure mystery. All are welcome to join us on this journey of contemplative practice. Please contact Cindy Volmer, Kate Biederman, Tami Cooper, Renee McWIlliams, or Katie Bartelt for more information. Page 5
6 First Cross Winds Days for Girls Sew-a-Thon Huge Success Cross Winds fellowship hall was all a buzz on October 12 as 32 people worked at tracing, cutting, stringing, turning, and sewing the many parts needed for making reusable feminine hygiene items for the Days for Girls project. The finished items will be put into kits and distributed to several third world countries. These kits allow girls to attend school when they have their period so they get the education they need and deserve. Special thanks to Judy Johnson, Maple Grove Rotary Member for sharing supplies and equipment and telling us about the Days for Girls story. Also thanks to Roger Roth for running sound and Alec Baker for loading and unloading equipment and supplies. A huge thank you to the many people who donated their time, supplies, and food for the event. We had so much fun that another Days for Girls event is being planned at Cross Winds for early The Stitches of Love Sewing group hosted this event. Our next meeting is Nov. 2 at 1:00 pm at Cross Winds. We welcome anyone who wants to sew or would like to learn to sew to join us! Page 6
