The conference will take place on October 8 th at Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, and October 9 th at John F. Kennedy High School in Somers. The theme of the day will focus as the conferences will touch on the theme of the Year of Mercy. BRONX, NEW YORK 28 th Sunday in Ordinary Time: 2 Kings 5:14-17 The introduction to this book speaks of three kinds of content found in all literary texts: intellectual, emotional, and aesthetic. Identifying each is critical, and today s First Reading demonstrates the importance of identifying the intellectual content. You won t be able to do that without reading what comes before this passage in 2 Kings 5. There you will learn that Naaman, army commander and foreign dignitary, has come to Israel in the hope of curing his leprosy. But his hopes are dashed when Elisha simply sends word to him to bathe in the Jordan rather than making some grand spectale of healing. Angry and disappointed, he prepares to leave, but is persuaded by his servants that he has nothing to lose in following Elisha s instructions. Our passage recounts the miracle that follows. The words plunged, seven times, and little child help create a sense of the remarkable healing. But something more important follows; Namaan, in the grip of gratitude, embraces the God of Israel as earth s only god and promises to worship no other. Back home, duty will bind him to worship his nation s god, yet he boldly makes this declaration. Because of the belief that gods could be worshipped only in their own land, he even asks for soil to take with him on which he will erect an altar to worship the Lord. The remarkable faith of this foreigner sets the stage for the faithfilled Samaritan of the Gospel. Elisha refusal of gifts for his service reflects no rancor, but his awareness that he did only what God required, so any reward will come from the Lord. Both men are bold exemplars of faith lived and spoken with conviction.
