1 O 2017 Inside this issue: From the Pastor 2 Upcoming Events 3 After a full year of events, the 500 th Commemoration of the Reformation is upon us. Sunday, October 29 is the day! We will remember the events of Martin Luther that set the reformation in motion. The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), will host a commemoration of the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation on Oct. 31 at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation in Washington, D.C. The event, which will meet under the theme "Looking Back and Called Forward," will be available online via livestream for all to watch. Much, much closer to home, we will celebrate in worship with the Big Thompson Brass, organ, and KOG choir leading us. At 10:45AM worship, the Church will grow as we confirm four youth. (see below) It s a once in a lifetime event to worship on the 500 th Commemoration of the historic event that led to the Reformation and the formation of our denomination as Lutherans. But this day doesn t lead us to only look backwards. We are indeed Freed and Renewed in Christ which impacts our everyday lives. RE-Formation was Then. Is Now. And Will be Always by God s renewing grace. We claim that grace through Baptism, receive it at the Lord s table and through the Word. What a day to remember and recommit to our identity as God s children and as Lutheran Christians sent out to be God s hands for the healing of the world. Walking the Life of Grace with you, Pastor Ruth Ann King of Glory Confirmands! On Reformation Day, Sunday, October 29, four Confirmation Students will Affirm their Baptisms. After two full years of classes with Pastor Ruth Ann, Diana Linden-Johnson, and Joe Jedrzejewski, these students are ready to be responsible for the promises their parents once made for them in Baptism. They will promise to worship, share in the Lord s Supper, hear the Word, work for justice and peace. These young people become full voting members of King of Glory and we are excited for them to continue sharing their God given gifts at church and in the world. Confirmation will take place at the 10:45AM service, but we will honor them with a reception at the 9:40AM hour. Please pray for and support our youth as they experience this important Faith Milestone. 2 FROM THE PASTOR About the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America: The ELCA is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, with more than 3.7 million members in more than 9,300 congregations across the 50 states and in the Caribbean region. Known as the church of "God's work. Our hands," the ELCA emphasizes the saving grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ, unity among Christians and service in the world. The ELCA's roots are in the writings of the German church reformer Martin Luther. About the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation Martin Luther posted the Ninety-Five Theses in Wittenberg, Germany, on Oct. 31, 1517, and the resulting debate about Christian teaching and practice led to changes that have shaped the course of Western Christianity for almost 500 years. The Reformation offers to Christians everywhere a liberating way of listening to and sharing the word of God. It teaches that Christ's life flows through faith into a life of service to the neighbor and offers the promise of God's love that makes possible a life of "living, daring confidence in God's grace." Thanks to all the members and Pastor Ruth Ann who came to help me celebrate my 100th birthday in August. You made the day very special! And thanks too, for all the lovely cards I received. I ve been a member of this church for almost 40 years and I feel blessed to still have friends among you! Sincerely, Martha Staby Hurricane & Disaster Relief Lutheran Disaster Response The road to recovery from this summer s hurricane disasters will be long, and Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR) will be there to accompany those affected through every phase of these disasters.
