1 F 2017 Bridge Ministries Continuing Education Classes Smart phone applications. Did you ever wonder what all those colored emblems were on the screen of your smart phone? Well I am told that they are not merit badges for life skills but actually portals into a world of media, entertainment and relationship management. Still mystified, then come to the class on smart phone applications Sunday January 29 at noon. Jedi Joe will lead us in a discussion of what apps are and what they can do. Perhaps you have a favorite app to share with the group. Bring your phone and we will dial up a rousing discussion. Bring a dish to share for the lunch that begins at noon. Sign up on line or in the concourse. February 19 Legal documents to make your intentions known even after you are incapacitated. On Sunday February 19 Bill Beyers, Attorney and KOG member, will conduct a discussion of Living Wills, Power of Attorney, Medical directives and last will and testament. Those of us who have gone through the confusion and indecision following the loss of a loved one can attest to the importance of leaving directives behind. The session will begin at noon with a potluck lunch so bring a dish to share. Sign up on line or in the concourse. Try SignUp Genius It s a web app, our way to sign up ON-LINE for events! Each time we have an event or volunteer need, we will set up a list with a unique link - you just click on the link for your choice, and fill in the form to sign up, right on your computer or mobile device! Look for the yellow Logo! Lunch Bunch! Looking to meet new people? Do you normally eat alone? Want some company? The Lunch Bunch is for anyone any age who would like to eat Sunday lunch together after 10:45AM worship. Come Feb We are eating at Applebee s! (213 E. 29th St.) Meet there at Noon. 2 FROM THE PASTOR We re in the season of Epiphany. The beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday, doesn t take place until March 1. Therefore we have seven weeks of Epiphany this year. The readings we hear in church are stories of people becoming aware that Jesus is God s Son walking on earth. They are ah ha moments in the face of the living God. Henri Nouwen talks about how noise and busy-ness is one of our greatest detractors from coming face to face with God. We may long for quiet and solitude, but once we try it, we get scared. We hear our own thoughts and inner chaos coming to the forefront of our minds. To have solitude is not at first a normal response to our busy and preoccupied lives. As we turn our eyes towards Lent, perhaps we use Epiphany to begin preparing our hearts. As Nouwen would say, Discipline is the other side of discipleship. A spiritual discipline, therefore is the concentrated effort to create some inner and outer space in our lives, where this obedience can be practiced. Through a spiritual discipline we prevent the world from filling our lives to such an extent that there is no place left to listen. A spiritual discipline sets us free to pray or, to say it better, allows the Spirit of God to pray in us. (Making All Things New; An Invitation to the Spiritual Life. Harper One This excerpt from Devotional Classics. Richard Foster and James Bryan Smith. Harper San Francisco Pg ) First we write down a time we d like to meet God in quiet; put it in our planners. If we can only stand 5 or 10 minutes a day, then commit to that amount. We still our minds. If random thoughts about the grocery list or the next golf game come, we write it down or gently let it float away. Perhaps we use a scripture verse such as The Lord is my shepherd to focus our thoughts. Repeat it over and over. Or pray, Come, Holy Spirit, come. Solitude with God doesn t feel natural at first when we are so used to being with others, having the noise of the TV, or rushing off to our next meeting. But it is a beginning. Trust that God is with us even if we cannot feel anything happening. The first objective is simply to open our hearts and minds to listen for God in the quiet. We will begin to yearn for these quiet, undistracted moments with the Lord. And we will become more aware of God, who can speak when we are listening. May God bless our coming to be in God s presence and grant us small epiphanies along the way. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (Matthew 6:6) Walking it with you, Pastor Ruth Ann Prayer Chain If you have a special prayer request please contact the church office and indicate whether you want the prayer to be public or only for the confidential prayer chain. Please keep the church office updated regarding your prayer concern. You may call or the church office ( ); office@aplace2grow.org, or Pastor Ruth Ann at Ruthann@aplace2grow.org Dinner-4-Eight Hiatus Dinners48 is going to take the spring session off in I hope to jump start the group dinners again this fall. We need to rethink how we can get more people involved and how we can improve on format, timing of the dinners, and other suggestions. Besides, I need a break! It s been almost twenty years of doing menus and groups! I would like to find out if this type of fellowship is something that KOG members want to continue. I welcome any suggestions and/or comments. Please contact me via my home phone, or sgrandia@msn.com. Best wishes for this upcoming spring! Sarajane Grandia Page 2 office@aplace2grow.org

Scott Whitney and Bryan French Habitat for Humanity Build Dates for 2017 Scheduled! King of Glory will be joining forces with Trinity and Zion to help Habitat build homes here in Loveland on four Saturdays this year. There is no "Thrivent Builds" home this year so it is possible that we will work on a different house each of the four build days. The first build day is March 11. *KOG is responsible for bringing lunch. (Sign up to help with lunch!) The build day is from 8:30AM-3:30PM (although you can work just the morning) and you must be at least 16 years old. If you are willing to help build that day, please contact Jean Weiss at introvert48@comcast.net or by calling her at If you want to look ahead, the other three dates are May 20, July 15, and Sept 30. Valentines for World Hunger The Hunger Team will sell Good Gifts Valentine Post Cards for $2.50 each beginning the weekend of January 28/29. There are three types: pigs, bees, and fruit trees. Pick yours up in the concourse! The Lenten emphasis on World Hunger will kick off with the Intergenerational Lent Event on February 26th! LCM-CSU CSU is looking for your input! Are you a CSU alumni? Did you attend Lutheran Campus Ministry? 2017 is the 50th anniversary of the ministry. They could use some help in organizing and putting on activities around that. Second, they need assistance in mobilizing alumni to support the ministry. People with gifts in those areas would be a real blessing. If you have questions, comments, or ideas, please call Newton Seitzinger (970) (cell) or talk to Pastor Ruth Ann. From Lutheran Campus Ministry Your gifts to campus ministry support opportunities for faith formation through worship, Bible study, peer ministry, service and community building. This month we are looking forward to a winter retreat at Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp with students and staff from Lutheran Campus Ministry CSU, CU Boulder and UNC. Thank you for your continued prayers and support for campus ministry. For more info about Lutheran Episcopal Campus Ministry at University of Northern Colorado contact Pastor Deb Abbott - lcm.unco@gmail.com. We will not only highlight the heritage by which our Lutheran perspective on the gospel has been shaped, but also focus on our commitment to church unity, especially with the Roman Catholic branch of the Christian family. Finally, we will explore what our Lutheran contribution to the life of the whole Body of Christ might be in this new century. Re-Formation Events: Lutheran-Roman Catholic Joint Prayer Services Sunday, March 19, 2017, 3 p.m. Bethany Lutheran Church 4500 E. Hampden Ave Cherry Hills Village Denver, CO Creation Care Darrell Phelps, KOG Custodian, reports that we are regularly recycling twice as much over trash. Way to go caring for creation!
