She founded Taller San Jose Hope Builders in 1995 when, living with other sisters of St. Joseph in gang-ridden Santa Ana, she became determined to find a way to stem the tide of youth violence she saw all around her. She launched Taller San Jose to help high-risk young adults finish high school and restructure their lives in a positive way. In 2006, she received the James Irvine Foundation s Leadership Award for her innovative and effective solutions in addressing significant issues in the state of California and she is a 2008 Purpose Prize Fellow. Learn about how this very successful program continues to help young people finish high school, restructure their lives, and develop marketable skills. July 18 SPEAKER: Deacon Dominick Peloso TOPIC: The Power of Forgiveness Deacon Dominick comes to us from Nativity Church in Menlo Park. He spent 10 years studying for the priesthood and has 30 graduate units of Catholic theology. He worked in the Menlo Park police department for 31 years, retiring in 2001 as Assistant Chief, and has been a Permanent Deacon in his home parish since He will be speaking on The Power of Forgiveness. While giving numerous examples of the beauty and power of forgiveness, he will point out how necessary it is to forgive so as to grow in happiness, enjoy others, and get closer to Christ. Unforgiveness is an anchor so many are carrying around while wondering when life will get better. Forgiveness heals the wounds, even those unseen or unsuspected. July 25 SPEAKERS: Father Angelos Sebastian and Father Tuan Pham TOPIC: Getting to Know Our New Clergy Father Angelos Sebastian and Father Tuan Pham will speak about their backgrounds, how they chose to become priests, and a give us some insight into their past activities. SPIRITUAL DIRECTION is a Spiritual Communion inviting God to lead an individual through daily issues to recognize His Holy Will. A Spiritual Director will help encounter one's soul search for greater meaning in Faith by meeting monthly for one hour. There is no cost, simply the desire to answer the Lord's knock. What Spiritual Direction is NOT. The gift of Spiritual Direction is not therapy, or counseling or Bible study, or meditation or group sessions, or clinical psychology or a religious course. Spiritual Direction has no format based on an agenda. Rather it is, for 1 hour a month, a spiritual communion inviting God, the Holy Spirit, to lead us through personal issues at hand.
