We are committed to responding to each other through communities and ministries of faith and love, addressing our spiritual, social and educational needs. We believe that each of us is called to be a supportive, compassionate, and caring Christian witness in Mission Viejo, the Diocese of Orange and in the world Estanciero Drive, Mission Viejo, CA Phone: (949) Fax: (949)
2 Page 2 Dear Parishioners & Friends, More than 3 years ago when I was still studying in Rome, I received news from the Diocese of Orange that I was going to be assigned to St. Kilian Catholic Church as Parochial Vicar. To be honest, I had no idea where the Church was located other than the fact that it was somewhere in Mission Viejo. Additionally, St. Kilian was one of the few churches in the Diocese I was not able to visit during my pastoral year. It was definitely located in an unfamiliar area for me. Having grown up in Garden Grove and attending St. Columban Catholic Church, I would say that I am pretty familiar with central and north Orange County. But the south is different. My only connection with the South was the Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano, where I was assigned for 2 summers, one as a seminarian in 2009 and the other as a newly ordained priest in The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Looking back to when I first heard the news about my assignment at St. Kilian, I must admit that I was nervous. Besides not knowing anyone at the parish, I was also nervous because it was going to be a transition for me. Prior to this, I was living in Rome for the past 6+ years. After getting used to Italy for all those years, it was time to return home and to adjust back to "American" culture. Coincidentally, I booked my flight from Rome to LAX on July 4th. When the plane was landing at around 9:00 PM at LAX, all the fireworks were going off as our nation celebrates Independence day. It felt like a "welcome home" moment! Reflecting on the ordination of 6 new priests for the Diocese of Orange last weekend (one of whom will be assigned to St. Kilian at the beginning of next month), I am reminded of a priest's vocation to go and minister to the people of God wherever he is sent. Starting July 1st, I will be assigned as Parochial Vicar at Christ our Savior Catholic Church in Santa Ana (close to SNA airport & South Coast Plaza) and as adjutant judicial vicar at the office of canonical services (at the diocesan pastoral center at Christ Cathedral Campus). Both of these assignments will be exciting! At Christ our Savior for example, we are getting ready to build a big Church hopefully starting early next year that is large enough to seat 1250 people. At the same time however, I will deeply miss the St. Kilian community and all the wonderful people who make this parish truly great! It has been a great joy for me to be a part of this community. I will miss the staff and volunteers in the various ministries whom I have worked with during my time here. I will miss the Fish Fry, the Oktoberfest, the pancake breakfasts and the countless events that go on at the parish. I will miss the smiles and warm laughter from so many of you. Lastly, I will miss all who have been a part of my life for these past 3 years. Thank you for your love, prayers and support! Thank you for offering up your time, your talent and your treasure to build up this great community. It is hard to say goodbye! Know that no matter where we are, together we journey in faith! The words of St. Paul the Apostle say this well: "may the God of peace himself make you perfectly holy and may you entirely, spirit, soul, and body, be preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Thess. 5:23). Let us keep each other in prayer. Please do come and visit! You're always welcome. And until we meet again, God bless! Sincerely yours in Christ our Savior, Fr. Paul H. Vu

9 St. Kilian Catholic Church Page 9 SPIRITUAL DIRECTION ~ ~ ~ How It Works. SPIRITUAL DIRECTION is a Spiritual Communion inviting God to lead an individual through daily issues to recognize His Holy Will. A Spiritual Director will help encounter one's soul search for greater meaning in Faith by meeting monthly for one hour. There is no cost, simply the desire to answer the Lord's knock. What Spiritual Direction is NOT. The gift of Spiritual Direction is not therapy, or counseling or Bible study, or meditation or group sessions, or clinical psychology or a religious course. Spiritual Direction has no format based on an agenda. Rather it is, for 1 hour a month, a spiritual communion inviting God, the Holy Spirit, to lead us through personal issues at hand. In our broken humanity we come to realize by soul searching the need for something more. This is Christ calling to love more deeply. Please call our Spiritual Directors: Marie Gomez, Margaret Jenkins, Or the Parish Office for more information.
