Las Posadas Celebration of the Nativity Friday, December 16 Church Courtyard Simbang Gabi Saturday, December 17 4:15 p.m. Followed by Mass The word posada means inn or shelter in Spanish and the Las Posadas celebration recreates Mary s and Joseph s search for a place to stay in Bethlehem. Join our Spanish Ministry as we look for shelter for the Holy Couple. Food, drink and fun - especially for families with young children. A perfect way to remind our children of the Reason for the Season. Meaning Night Mass, Simbang Gabi is a Filipino Christmas tradition that helps to share their religious faith with the entire parish. St. Kilian will celebrate the tradition on one night, with a reception to follow in the Hall. You will notice parols, which are star-shaped lanterns, representing the star of Bethlehem that guided the Magi to the place where Jesus was born. These lanterns are meant to serve as the guiding light and sign of Mary and Joseph, and more importantly, Jesus, to come to us, as we are ready for them. It reminds us that Jesus is the Light of the World bringing life and light to all who accept Him.

In January, St. Kilian will be offering classes through the Institute of Pastoral Ministry to help our catechists and anyone else interested in learning more about effective methods for teaching others about our faith. The class being offered, M100-Catechetical Methods, fulfills one of 4 course requirements for basic certification. We highly encourage those involved in Religious Education, Faith Formation, Confirmation and RCIA to consider signing up. Those who volunteer their time to help in any area of Faith Formation at St. Kilian may have the $40 registration fee reimbursed upon successful completion of the course. Classes will be held on 3 consecutive Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Kilian in the Parish Center. 10 Page 10 REV. MSGR. LAWRENCE J. GIBSON Third Sunday of Advent Rev. Msgr. Lawrence J. Gibson, 87, entered into eternal life on December 3, 2016, after a brief illness. Monsignor was born on November 21, 1929, in Glendale, California, the son of Hugh and Eva Gibson. After attending Holy Family and Incarnation elementary schools, he pursued a twelve year course of study at Los Angeles College Junior Seminary and St. John s Major Seminary, culminating in his ordination to the priesthood on April 27, Throughout his sixty-one years of ordained ministry, Monsignor was, first and foremost, a parish priest. Father Larry loved his parishioners, and his parishioners loved him! His assignments included St. Andrew (Pasadena), St. Francis Cabrini (South Los Angeles), St. Basil (Wilshire Center), Sacred Heart (Covina), St. Bernadette (Baldwin Hills), St. Ambrose (West Hollywood), St. Patrick (North Hollywood), Good Shepherd (Beverly Hills), and St. Thomas Aquinas (Monterey Park). In 1972, he became the founding director of St. Bernadine Chapel, which occupied a unique storefront space in the underground shopping complex at ARCO Plaza in downtown Los Angeles. He was appointed pastor of Ss. Felicitas and Perpetua Church in San Marino in 1974, guiding that parish for the next twenty-nine years. Upon retirement in 2003, he relocated to Laguna Woods Village, where he enjoyed the company of fellow retired seminary classmates while ministering on a part-time basis at local parishes including St. Kilian (Mission Viejo), St. Nicholas (Laguna Woods), and Santiago de Compostela (Lake Forest), and serving as a chaplain at Orange County juvenile detention facilities. Concurrently with his work in local parishes, Monsignor served the larger Archdiocese in a variety of capacities, including Director of Vocations (from 1961 through 1974), Secretary to Cardinal McIntyre, Executive Director of the Liturgical Commission, and Vice-Principal of Bishop Amat High School (La Puente). Among Monsignor s most treasured memories were his participation in the opening session of the Second Vatican Council in 1962, and his personal meetings with three popes: St. John XXIII, Bl. Paul VI, and St. John Paul II. He was honored as a Papal Chamberlain in 1966, and as a Prelate of Honor in Throughout his long and varied ministry, Monsignor highly valued the strong fraternal bonds he shared with his brother priests, and cherished his warm friendship with the Carmelite Sisters. Accordingly, in lieu of flowers, please consider making a gift to the Archdiocesan Priest Retirement Fund, or to the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles.
