From the Rector The Rev. Wilma Jakobsen 2014 was a year of dreaming and discerning, of joys and grief, full, rich, growthful and challenging. I give thanks for all of it. The St. Jude s community is ever growing and deepening as the Holy Spirit leads us in our journey together. Dream, discern, direc on and the way forward: The major work of our community in 2014 was our discernment process. The overview of this far reaching process is outlined below. The commi ee of dedicated people, led by Bruce LaFetra and Jeffrey Pugh, coordinated an extensive process of consul ng and listening with parishioners, and compiling our Mission Covenant. This is a covenant in which we, the St Jude s faith community, promise to engage in seven strategic areas over the next three to five years. This is the first stage of discernment. The vestry has decided to focus on leadership and social jus ce/outreach in 2015, along with stewardship and giving. The next step is to formulate concrete goals in these areas, which will be done by the vestry and interested volunteers. These are the areas in which we are most challenged, as leaders who have served for years now want to step down and pass the baton to others. We need to bring more people into the work, to form teams around those who are burdened with their tasks, work at leadership succession, train and support both leaders and volunteers. Our discernment process showed us clearly that St. Jude s wants to focus its energies in social jus ce and outreach in order to make a deeper and more effec ve impact. Our annual pledge campaign and the trends in giving over the past five years show that the reali es of our aging congrega on, in the context of the high cost of living Silicon Valley, has had an impact on our giving. This is a spiritual issue and will be an ongoing focus in 2015 If we put these seven strategic areas of ac on and the goals iden fied into prac ce over the next years, St. Jude s will be like a blossoming, flowering tree that provides shade to people near and far, parishioners and neighbors, and sows seed in ways that we can only imagine at present. We will be looking for volunteers to par cipate in making these goals a reality. We invite you to offer your skills, passion, exper se, prayer and me in a way that works for you. Sundays at St. Jude s Our worship and liturgy con nue to be an exci ng blend of tradi onal, gospel, jazz and contemporary music that touches our hearts in deep, inspira onal, celebratory and joyful ways on Sundays. It is a privilege to be in a church with such a great team of brass players, instrumentalists, jazz musicians, and singers. We added four outstanding jazz vespers to our worship services that brought in outside speakers and contributed to different outreach organiza ons. Thanks to the en re music team who make this all possible! Along with an enormous team of greeters, ushers, altar guild, bread bakers, sound system, readers, Eucharis c ministers, and more, what a great Sunday team! Highlights and DeAnza College Highlights of the year include the visits of Fr Amirold from Hai and Fr Michael Lapsley from the Ins tute for Healing of Memories in South Africa. Michael will return in May and we will host a Healing of Memories workshop as part of his visit. Michael s visit included an event with the Inclusability Club at De Anza College, that brought together students, staff and parishioners and kick started our connec ons with the college. I was able to meet with key faculty and staff at the college, to learn how we can serve and partner with the college and also mutually benefit each other. This coincided with the start up in September of the fledgling Café DeAnza Study Hall project which provides free wifi and hot beverages for students, with the help of fi een volunteers and our new coordinator, Mary Mackenzie. Mary will con nue to coordinate the project and spend up to eight hours a week on the campus to grow and develop our connec ons and the numbers of students coming to the campus. Children, Youth, Families and Young Adults Beth Parab developed and grew each of our Children, Youth, Families and Young Adults ministries over the year. In par cular, the youth educa on program con nued and expanded its interfaith approach to their 6

faith educa on and forma on. The young adults group has grown as new young adults joined the church, and now meet monthly for coffee and held Lent and Advent book studies. We added Café Conversa ons a er the 10:30 am service on one Sunday a month for parents and interested adults who want to share in the interfaith learnings of the youth. Thanks to all the youth mentors, parents, Godly Play volunteers, coordinators and Faith-Full families folks! Associate priest: Sadly, Beth Parab s health and suffering with migraines took her out of the office in the last week of September and she was not able to return. In November she resigned in order to focus on her health and her family. We bade a sad yet celebratory farewell to her in December at a memorable service with Julie Nelson preaching on the place of children in the church, with the youth and children performing a gospel drama and singing a song. Beth con nues to face the challenges of returning to health. Her husband, Sameer, began a new job in Chicago in January 2015, and the family will move there at the end of the school year. Beth brought so much to us with her energy, laughter, crea vity, preaching, love for children and youth, and more. From the parent group and the book group she began, to myself as her colleague, and everyone else, we love her and miss her dearly. My deep thanks to the par cular volunteers who are carrying the load in this interim me, as I con nue to try to support and mentor them in her absence. We have welcomed Julie Nelson, Wendy Smith, and Bruce Bramle into the preaching roster to give support to me as I take the me to find the associate priest whom God is calling to St. Jude s at this me. Wendy has done a book study and Bruce will assist at Wednesday noon services, provide pastoral care to our elderly parishioners, and do some adult educa on. We are delighted they are part of the interim team! Our community: We con nued the tradi on of excellent adult forums on Sundays, Advent and Lent book studies, parish camp, summer potlucks and July 4 BBQ/concert. Social jus ce and outreach projects con nued to be part of the fabric of St. Jude s. Contempla ve morning prayer with fi een minutes of silence, led by parishioners, along with the weekly Taizé prayers on Tuesdays before people go to mee ngs, is the sustaining rhythm that hums below the energe c ac vity of this community and is a source of strength and energy. Dedicated, quiet, behind the scenes volunteers con nue to make St. Jude s a church where everyone plays their part and I am so grateful to each person who offers their gi s, me, energy, exper se, prayer and wisdom. On a personal note: In February my mother passed away and I joined the large group of parishioners whose elderly parents died in the past year. We began a bereavement group for those whose parents had died, which became a good space of support through the challenging journey of grief and loss. I am grateful to be in a parish where I can par cipate in a group and not only lead it. Last thanks: An enormous Thank You! to Donna Araiza our administrator, Laura Green and Billie Bandermann in the music program, Steve Swayze our watchman, Mary Mackenzie, DeAnza project coordinator, and to Beth Parab, Julie Nelson, Wendy Smith, Bruce Bramle, Jesus Reyes, Brian Nordwick, Bob Hansen and all the clergy who were a wonderful part of our life in We thanks for the loving presence of Tam Tran and Erika Domokos, our beloved and competent child care providers. They introduce God s love to our youngest a endees. My hear elt thanks to Howard Hill, senior warden and by extension, Jan Hill, and Steve Stolarik and Joellen, for your work, me, wisdom, prayer, and dedicated service to St. Jude s, and to Rasika Weerasooriya, Bruce LaFetra, and Juneann McDonald who leave the vestry. Along with all the vestry members and opera onal staff team I am so grateful for each of you. Challenges ahead: I enter 2015 with an enormous sense of excitement about the year, and all that God has in store for us. There are wonderful opportuni es ahead for con nued growth, outreach, pastoral care, learning and spiritual growth. The scripture verse that is close to my heart and appropriate at this me is: Ephesians 3:20-21, Now to the one who by the power at work within us is able accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to God be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all genera ons, forever and ever. Amen. For all that has been, Thanks! For all that will be, Yes! 7 From the Rector

Howard Hill From the Senior Warden It has been a privilege to serve as your Senior Warden this year and to work with Wilma, Beth and other leaders. As a Parish you are well represented by those you elect to the vestry and the delega on, by those who serve in our many Ministries, members of the Parish Opera ons team and by our staff. I would par cularly like to recognize the dedica on of Donna Araiza, our Office Manager, Liz Jones, our Treasurer and Steve Stolarik, our Junior Warden. A lot of their ac vity goes unrecognized. Much of the focus this year has been to seek a vision for the future of St. Jude s rather than comple ng a set of pre-established goals. The Dream and Discern ini a ve, led by Jeffrey Pugh, Bruce LaFetra and Wilma, began toward the end of 2013 and was a major ac vity in The leaders were aided by an incredible team of commi ee members and the process involved the whole Parish. We did con nue work on some goals remaining from the previous year. In par cular, Mike Landis worked on Leadership succession of our many Ministries. This has led to some new leaders stepping forward to relieve long serving members anxious to pass on their responsibili es. Thanks to the energy conserva on and recycling efforts by Don Disney, Brock Carpenter and Syd Jacobsen, St. Jude s was recognized as a Green Business by the City of Cuper no and was a winner of an award by California Interfaith Power and Light in San Francisco. We have followed two different ways simultaneously to see into the future: the engineering approach and the ar s c approach. Both are valid, complementary, and some mes in crea ve tension. Following the first, we gathered data from as many members as possible; there was an all-day Parish mee ng, facilitated by an outside consultant, an on-line survey, and many smaller mee ngs with members of individual Ministries. The data was analyzed and presented to the parish in a number of gatherings Following the second, which is also ongoing as we con nue to listen and discern the work of the spirit among us, we have been open to experiment with new expressions of our faith and to be ready to discuss new possibili es as they present themselves. The introduc on of a weekly Taizé service, daily Morning Prayer and Jazz Vespers are examples. The considera on of the request by Gina Pond to establish a monthly Between the Worlds Church group, melding Chris an, Cel c and pagan prac ces, at St. Jude s was another example. As part of that process, we have learned a great deal about ourselves as a community. We some mes appear to be a homogeneous group. We proclaim whoever you are, wherever you are on your journey of faith, you are welcome here. We don t all agree on the interpreta on of that proclama on and will con nue to be a conversa on among us. The results of the Discernment process are summarized in the proposed Mission Covenant. With your support, this Covenant will be a guide for the next vestry. 8

MISSION COVENANT OVERVIEW History and background: The discernment process began in December 2013, with daily contempla ve morning prayer, that con nued through 2014, and runs like a river flowing beneath our parish life. The discernment commi ee met from March to September The members included co-chairs Bruce LaFetra and Jeffrey Pugh, Kris Aus n, Carolyn Bowker, Carlos Estrada, Ian Greensides, Margot Jacobsen, Lauren Minkel, Mason Razavi, Becky Smith, Steve Stolarik, and Sherry Snow. Other major contributors to the discernment process were Sue Bryson, Mike Landis and Carlos Estrada with the parish survey, review of parish profile, and ministry roundtables, respec vely. Much grateful thanks to the commi ee members and organizers of the events above, whose dedicated work made this discernment process possible and as widely par cipatory as it has been. The number and level of contribu ons by the parish were though ul and insigh ul, and reflect the commitment to St. Jude s by its members. The informa on gathered is a remarkable kaleidoscope of the parish and its people. The Discernment Process: Discernment is a combina on of informa on gathering and prayerful pondering, listening to the Spirit and discerning where and how the Spirit was and is at work. Gathering of informa on and opinion from the vestry and parish: Weeknight discussions, informa on mee ngs and report backs, vestry retreat in February 2014 Parish Day Fri/Sat in March 2014 Parish Forums Parish Survey, Double Clicks Round Table Ministry discussions Advent prayers Detailed review of Parish Profile. Regular report backs to vestry and in the monthly View newsle er. Prayerful pondering and listening: How has the Spirit revealed itself and moved us during this me of discernment? Who, or what experiences, impacted or transformed us during this me of discernment? The process of paying a en on to these ques ons con nues. This is an exercise that is best done in a context of quiet and listening, and should be one of the follow up steps taken by vestry. These are the tributaries that flowed into the river of discernment since Advent and December 2013, as part of our parish life: -Contempla ve Morning Prayer with a Cel c flavor, began on weekdays in Advent and con nued since then, and is now a regular, sustaining part of our life. -The advent prayers wri en on blue strips of paper reflected similar thoughts coming out of the parish day and the survey. -Kaleidoscope training: a small group of parishioners a ended four workshops as part of this diocesan training. They learned some tools for parishes that help build inclusion, sustainable rela onships, and leadership, which we have used in our discernment process and in some of our mee ngs and groups. This training con nues in 2014/15. -During the year, four quiet days were held with Canon Jesus Reyes facilita ng. They included methods of prayer and neighborhood walks. -Michael Lapsley s visits in 2013 and 2014 produced good fruit. Michael has asked us if he can hold a Healing of Memories weekend at St. Jude s in May 2015 that would be open to people from St. Jude s, from our diocese, and the Diocese of California. -De Anza College: Michael Lapsley s visit included an event at the college, a ended by some parishioners, and an event at church, a ended by a few students. The pilot wifi project has begun and has had good support of volunteers and par cipants thus far. -Gina Pond and the Between the Worlds Church: The request to rent space was a catalyst for an important conversa on about what it means to say, Whoever you are, wherever you are on your journey of faith, you are welcome here. That conversa on con nues to be of crucial importance for us. -West Valley Community services: WVCS approached us and asked us to host their weekly youth summer program on Fridays. We hosted this for ten weeks during the summer. -South African connec ons: In addi on to Michael Lapsley s visit, this summer we had 3 events involving 9 Mission Covenant Overview

Mission Covenant Overview South Africans, the Desmond Tutu documentary preview, the visit of Maurice Dyer to preach, and the visit of Bishop Margaret Vertue. -Our adult educa on program has begun to integrate their program with the youth educa on program, which focuses their Chris an educa on through the lens of other faith tradi ons. The adult forum program will be coordinated with the youth mul -faith program and visits to places of worship. -Green Business cer fica on: Over the past year, St. Jude s has been working towards cer fica on as a green business in Cuper no. The final steps for this took place in July. We are the first faith congrega on in Cuper no to be cer fied, and this commits us to ongoing environmentally friendly prac ces. -Hai connec ons: in February, Fr Amirold visited St. Jude s and we signed a five year covenant to con nue our partnership with St. Patrick s School and community in Locorbe, Hai. Next steps: The Mission Covenant is not our final step. It is intended to provide the direc on that forms the basis for our ac ons through concrete goal se ng by the vestry following parish feedback. Mission Covenant We, the parishioners of Saint Jude s Episcopal Church in Cuper no, strive to follow Jesus Christ and his Great Commandment to love God with all our heart and soul and mind and strength...and love our neighbor as ourselves. Therefore we covenant to: - Learn to live as disciples of Jesus in the modern world. We will cul vate lifelong educa on and spiritual founda on through a variety of ways. Reflec ng our mul -cultural, mul -religious area, we will develop a mul -year, mul -age, interfaith curriculum that allows all ages to clarify their faith, and share it in an understandable way. - Support parishioners through all stages of their lives. We will embrace full par cipa on in church life, worship, and service by young adults, families, youth, and children. We will grow our pastoral care ministries to care for parishioners in need. We will educate ourselves in the spirituality of aging so that we can con nue to be effec ve and faithful disciples as we age. - Deepen our welcome and accessibility to people of various backgrounds, ethnici es, ages, and situa ons. We will especially welcome the LGBT community that has historically been marginalized by the church. We will make church life welcoming by be er use of electronic media, innova ve worship, and alterna ve liturgies, and by training parishioners on inclusion and full incorpora on. - Strengthen our community by holding courageous conversa ons within a safe space. We will learn how to draw on diversity of opinion, different points of view, and ways of doing things while respec ng that we are all coming from a place of faith. We will also become a more visible and recognizable presence in Cuper no and Silicon Valley, by providing a safe space for dialogue on controversial or difficult topics. - Nurture our leaders and volunteers. We will provide training, support, and respect for volunteers me and energy. We will raise up new leaders where necessary to avoid burnout and share the load by engaging more of the parish in service and ac on. - Focus energy and resources to make a greater impact in social jus ce and outreach. We will build on our tradi on of social jus ce and outreach, and encourage all parishioners to make service a priority. We will engage with the larger community to iden fy a small number of long term, local service projects that are designed to address social issues, while respec ng our exis ng local and global partnerships. - Strive to be faithful stewards of our gi s, resources, and property, and of God s crea on. We will encourage generous individual giving, embodied in our parish goal of the the. We will share our campus, our money, and our resources for local and global needs. 10

Flower Guild: Susan Lanser The Flower Ministry is a quiet, contempla ve, and crea ve ministry that arranges flowers to enhance our Sunday worship each week as well as to decorate the church at Easter and Christmas. Our funding comes from parishioners who donate money to dedicate the arrangements for a par cular weekend in honor of individuals, to commemorate important events, or simply in thanksgiving for God's many blessings. Opportuni es to support this ministry also occur around Easter and Christmas to dedicate a lily or poinse a respec vely. The sign up boards will be passed around at the annual mee ng; please consider making a dedica on to support this ministry. This ministry is in need of at least two volunteers to join the current group. If you enjoy working with flowers and highligh ng nature's beauty, please consider devo ng a few hours on a Saturday once a month to arrange flowers for a Sunday service. No experience with flower arranging is necessary, one-on-one training and guidance will be provided if required. It s easy, it s fun, and its a great way to par cipate in a ministry that enhances our worship at St. Judes. Altar Guild: Nancy Mangin Altar Guild is a dedicated group of parishioners working to prepare services for Sundays and special occasions. Five teams commit for one Sunday a month. We welcome new members; women, youth and men. My hear elt thanks to this dedicated group of excep onal members. Worship 13

Worship Community Greeters & Newcomers: Marianne Wilcox, Barb Hamer Greeters and Hosts have an important ministry at St. Jude s. Greeters extend a warm welcome to parishioners and newcomers at every service. One of their du es is to assist and encourage everyone to wear a name tag which helps us get to know each other by name. Visitors are iden fied with a blue border name tag. Hosts extend the spirit of St. Jude s to our visitors in the parish hall a er the 10:30 service, assis ng them with a beverage, engaging them in conversa on and introducing them to others in the parish. To help our visitors feel connected, please introduce yourself to anyone with a St. Jude s visitor bag and/or a blue border name tag. If you need a name tag, please complete the order form available at the Greeter s table at each service. If you are interested in being a Greeter or host please contact Reg and Barb Hamer (regbarbhamer@comcast.net ) for the 8:00 service or Marianne Wilcox (mmwilcox@gmail.com) for the 10:30 service. Parish Life: Pat Coles The parish life commi ee organizes hospitality for parish events and members of St. Jude s generously provide food and me to support our community life. In 2014 the weekly Coffee Hour at both services con nued to encourage members to socialize and to offer hospitality to newcomers. Other tradi onal parish social events con nued including: the Annual Mee ng potluck brunch, Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, Lenten Soup Suppers, 4 th of July Celebra on, Harvest Dinner, Small Dinner Groups, refreshments a er special musical events and ad hoc social events. The Parish Life ministry is also on call to help parishioners with occasional hospitality needs such as memorial services and weddings. In addi on coffee, tea, cocoa, and paper supplies are kept on hand to support other parish events as they occur throughout the year. This year we con nued serving Fair Trade Coffee and we switched to compostable paper supplies to support the goal of being ecologically responsible. Please consider volunteering for a favorite parish life event. Help is needed for all of the regularly scheduled events, for planning/organizing and recrui ng volunteers. If you will help please contact the church office. 14

Library: Charlo e Pannell The goal of the St. Jude's library commi ee is to offer books and media that will support, inspire, strengthen and transform parishioners spiritual lives. St. Jude's library is located in the Farmhouse, in the room adjoining our Parish Office. The library also maintains a book cart in the Parish Hall to showcase new or seasonal offerings. Because we use a self-check-out system, parishioners may borrow books any me they have access to the Farmhouse or Parish Hall. Our library has its catalog both in the database in the Farmhouse, and online. One can access the online catalog directly at: or from the Saint Jude's Episcopal Church web page, under the "Educa on" heading, select "Parish Library", and click on the highlighted link. For those not wishing to use a computer to find books, we also have a Title Catalog binder on the library's desk shelf. We have five main sec ons in our library: Children's/Teens & Paren ng (books and media), Reference (for in-depth religious or Biblical studies), Adult-level Media (by the front door), Fic on, and Non-Fic on books. The Reference, Media, and Children's/Teen's & Paren ng sec ons are organized by category. Our Fic on and Non-Fic on books are organized alphabe cally by author's last name. This year the library commi ee has doubled the size of its Fic on sec on, which is now housed in its own bookcase. We have replaced many of the Children's VHS tapes with DVDs. We added variety to our offerings there, which now include the Tales of Virtue series, and Mister Roger s Neighborhood. This year we also updated our Adult-level media sec on by acquiring more Social Jus ce and thought provoking films. We con nue to refine our collec on and keep it current within the constraints of budget and shelf space. In the coming year, we hope to replace other obsolete media such as audio and video casse es with versions that have been released in CD and DVD formats. The St. Jude's library is maintained by volunteers, so if you love learning, libraries, or books and can spare a few hours a month, please contact Lianne Card, Charlo e Pannell, or Susan Witherspoon. 16 Community Narthex Display Boards: Ma Ma hews The Narthex Display Boards Ministry exists to visually enhance the church seasons, to draw a en on to parish events and ac vi es, and to provide another outlet for communica on. During 2014, the boards have been used to greet congregants with displays that e in with special themes for Lent and Advent. We have presented three-dimensional displays for Lent as a me for prepara on and spiritual growth to blossom at Easter me. Some of the displays have been interac ve, providing design elements on which to write individual prayers that you pin to the board. For All Saints, the interac ve mo f was also used to remember with pictures and names the personal saints in your own life. During the Green Season (Pentecost), the le board is put into use at mes to illustrate other events, such as the annual July 4 th Celebra on and the Parish Camp. Designs have been unique, for the most part, but some favorites have been revisited, as for the Easter display. The intent in every case is to be appropriate to the message and to be aesthe cally pleasing. Members of the Boards commi ee are: Lisa Carpenter who prepared her display commemora ng the 20 th anniversary of the apricot window currently the right board, Marcia Landis who prepared the Lenten display and the Advent display, Audrey Ma hews who prepared the Easter display and display for Cell Talk, and Ma Ma hews who chairs the commi ee and helps out the truly talented members wherever possible. Others have contributed special boards for special occasions. In fact, Donna Araiza was the first to put up an interac ve display for us. Ours is a small commi ee. This small size can present challenges when individuals have scheduling conflicts. For this reason, and to lighten the burden on this small crew, we invite anyone who would like to join our merry li le group to contact Ma Ma hews at (408) or or speak to any of the current members. Property: Syd Jacobsen St. Jude s property consists of three acres of land, a church building, a parish hall, two church school buildings, and an old farm house used as the church office. There are nine bathrooms, eleven heaters, three air condi oning units, a dumpster enclosure and storage buildings. We maintain a small orchard, parking lots, ground water runoff system, volunteer gardens, old and new landscaping and at least seventy irriga on systems. We also have a very large leaning, Coulter pine tree with cones that need to be removed every two to three years. The property is mainly maintained by a group of volunteers, a professional gardener, a janitorial service and paid handy persons. The main highlights for 2014: we replaced the vinyl flooring in rooms 2, 5 and 6 with laminate flooring. We had the large pine cones removed from the Coulter pine tree before they fell on church members and guests. The irriga on systems and landscaping was evaluated with recommenda ons as to care and maintenance. Next year will be my last year as property manager and a volunteer replacement is needed. The property manager s job is being divided into two parts. The buildings, parking lot, parking lot lights and parking lot drainage system will be under the Property Manager. Plan ngs and landscape will be managed by Gayle Bate. 18

Café DeAnza: Mary Mackenzie Café DeAnza Study Hall is a ministry in its first year of existence and a pilot project. We invite DeAnza College students to take advantage of our beau ful campus to hop on the internet, get away from the hustle and bustle of De Anza, and relax or study. We follow the schedule of the college, thus we are opera onal when the school is in session. Café DeAnza Study Hall strives to maintain a welcoming, safe environment for our student guests. We offer free wireless internet, and free hot beverages, with people occasionally bringing snacks. We are open Monday through Thursday 10:00 am-2:00 pm during the academic year. We had 18 individual students sign our Code of Conduct form, and 86 visits by students to Café DeAnza Fall Quarter. In the first week of 2015 we had five visits by students, with one new person. Last quarter we had 15 volunteers, this quarter we have 13. Thus, we are in need of three to replace the two we lost, and in addi on we need a minimum of three more people to volunteer in order to fill the schedule. As a volunteer there is plenty of me to do other work, cra s or read, with set up or clean up responsibili es either at the beginning or end of your assigned two hour shi. We try to maintain two people per two hour shi (10:00 am-12:00 pm or 12:00 pm-2:00 pm) Monday through Thursday. If we get more volunteers we can increase the number of hours available and increase the number of students, as they have indicated they would use it if the hours were longer. Thanks to all the volunteers for a wonderful first quarter of this ministry! Community Lay Eucharis c Visitors: Diane Snow Eucharis c Visitors (EVs) take communion to those physically unable to worship with us on Sunday. Thirteen EVs plus three parishioners made 162 visits to parishioners in 2014, a total of 451 communions. Most visits were to nursing/assisted living facili es and to people living at home. EVs met with Wilma as a group and par cipated in diocesan sponsored training as needed to fulfill licensing requirements. Please consider accompanying a licensed EV on a Sunday Visit. EVs are expected to go in pairs, but only one person needs to be licensed. Your presence (including teens) allows us to expand our ministry. The service we use is brief and the visits are kept short on purpose. Please talk with clergy and current EVs if you are interested in learning more. We welcome, encourage and will support poten al Eucharis c Visitors. To request communion at home or in a hospital or similar facility where a visit is needed, please contact the church office or clergy. Pastoral 19

Stephen Ministry: Judy Bailey Pastoral Stephen Ministry is an integral part of pastoral care at St. Jude s. Stephen Ministers provide one-to-one confiden al Chris an care to individuals who are experiencing a difficult me. In 2014 Stephen Ministers cared for 10 individuals, walking alongside them, providing a caring heart and a listening ear. These caring rela onships have lasted from a few weeks to over two years. Current Stephen Ministers are Noriko Kunimi, Gordon Mullin, Bet Messmer, Laura Bryson, Barbara Simmons, Charlo e Pannell, Joy Hayter, and leader, Judy Bailey. Providing spiritual care to someone in crisis, transi on, or any kind of life challenge requires training, commitment, me and con nued growth in one s own faith. Our Stephen Ministers study and discuss caregiving topics on a regular basis at two supervision mee ngs per month. St. Jude s is truly blessed to have a dedicated group of Stephen Ministers who take their pastoral ministry seriously and feel privileged to serve God in this special way was a year of change for Stephen Ministry. Betsy Fox Fisher and Diane Snow, original Stephen Leaders along with the late Jerry Witherspoon, decided to re re a er many years of faithful service. Susan Stanley, having served as a Stephen Minister and then later as a Stephen Leader, also decided to step down from a leadership role. The leadership that they gave to Stephen Ministry has provided a sound founda on for this ministry and one that can be built upon now and in the future. Their contribu- ons to this ministry are very much appreciated by all who have been part of Stephen Ministry since Looking ahead, Barbara Simmons is going to leadership training in February and everyone is excited about Barbara sharing her gi s in a leadership role. As members of this church community, you are the eyes and ears of both the clergy and the Stephen Ministers. Society encourages us to be independent and to deal with our problems alone, but God asks us to be interdependent, offering help to one another and receiving help from others when we are in need. Suffering alone is not God s intent for us. Jesus promises, Come unto me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens and I will give you rest (Ma hew 11:28). We can receive this rest when we turn to one another for comfort and help. Please keep Stephen Ministry in mind when talking with others and encourage anyone who might benefit from the care of a Stephen Minister to contact the clergy or Judy Bailey, Stephen Ministry referrals coordinator, to explore the possibility of having a Stephen Minister. If someone is hesitant to make that contact, you can ask for the individual s permission to make that contact for him or her. Good Samaritans: Jean Lin, Jan Hill Jan Hill and Jean Lin are con nuing as co-leaders for the Good Samaritan Ministry which coordinates meals and rides for those recovering from surgery or illness. We have approximately a dozen volunteers but could definitely use more as there are more incidences of surgery, cancer, and other long term illnesses which can benefit from this ministry. Several of our volunteers have long term illnesses of their own. So that, and volunteers being out of town etc. reduces the number of volunteers at any given me. In addi on, many volunteers would prefer not to be called too frequently. So if we are arranging meals or rides for one parishioner, and soon a er another need arises, we are short on available helpers. We regularly appeal for volunteers in the bulle n but so far none have come forward. We did add several volunteers from a forum appeal. We are happy to be providing a ministry which is such a prac cal outreach and expression of compassion in our community and one that is deeply appreciated by the recipients. 20

by commi ee "Chris an forma on is the lifelong process of growing in rela onship with God, self, others and all crea on. In this process we are transformed into the people God wants us to be." -- forma oncharter.com St. Jude s has two thriving Godly Play classes for grades PreK-2 and 3-5 that are taught by a wonderful team of 16 Storytellers and Greeters/Doorpersons. Several of the team became cer fied Godly Play instructors, a er a ending a three day na onal Godly Play Training that St. Jude s hosted in October. Linda Morris is our Godly Play director, ably assisted by Becky Smith and Mary Lyn Azar. As an Outreach Project, the children made paper dolls for the children of Saint-Patrick Episcopal School in Hai in January; the gi was presented to Fr. Amirold Lazard to bring to the children in Hai. The Chris an forma on component in the Youth Group program expanded to meet weekly on Sundays and gather for overnight lock-ins every month. The study of compara ve religions has grown to include middle-schoolers as well as high-school youth, and complementary discussions have been developed for parents to foster deeper learning and engagement. As part of the course, the youth have welcomed numerous guest speakers and have gone on excursions, including visi ng a Hindu temple and a ending a Shabbat service. In addi on to curricular work, the second annual Youth Group chili fundraiser resulted in over $700 of donated Christmas wish-list items for West Valley Community Services clients. The youth group also began to help clean the WVCS food pantry once a month as part of their lock-in events. Young people and children have become more integrated into parish worship through child-focused services and youth-led Sunday worship, which is now a fixture on the church calendar twice a year. The Youth Group has con nued to thrive in the wake of Beth s sad departure because of the efforts of Wilma and the youth mentors, including new volunteers who joined this year. Our nursery program con nues to under the care of Erika Domokos and Tam Tran. Our li lest ones love to play and sing together during the 10:30 am service. The Sheepfold in the narthex remains a place for toddlers and young children to play quietly, read and draw during worship with space for parents to relax and s ll be able to par cipate in worship. The Third Way, a support group for parents meets on Thursday mornings in the farmhouse. Nursery care is provided for The Third Way mee ngs. Faith-Full Families gathers families of school-aged children together one Sunday a month from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. One family takes the leadership role each month and seven families a end regularly. They enjoy each other's company so much that they have ou ngs to Night at Bethlehem every December and a summer pool party at the Azar's neighboring pool. Having new families join is a great way for the kids to get to know each other in a playful low-key environment. Much thanks goes to Jill Ba erson for her passionate dedica on to this ministry. The Young Adults group has been growing this year! They meet once a month for fellowship at the Coffee Society on the first Tuesday of the month at 8:00 pm. There was a Bible study of the Book of Romans during Lent. They also did a book study during the season of Advent discussing Zealot by Reza Aslan and ended the book group with a Christmas party at Wilma's house. Café De Anza Study Hall offers free WiFi, free hot beverages and a safe, quiet place for De Anza College students to meet and study Monday-Thursday 10:00-2:00 pm in the Parish Hall. The program began in the Fall Semester, thanks to a grant received from the Na onal Church with the Canterbury Founda on of our Diocese. Mary Mackenzie coordinates a group of volunteers from St. Jude s and other Deanery parishes, who greet the students and offer the refreshments. If you would like to volunteer, please contact the office. The CYFM commi ee met several mes in 2014, under the leadership of Beth Parab, and we will miss her involvement and dedica on to all of the above programs. CYFM Commi ee: Jill Ba erson, Lauren Corriveau Minkel, Steve Corriveau, Linda Morris, Becky Smith, John Kemp, Laura Bryson. Youth mentors: Steve Andrews, Doug Bailey, Karen Carlson, Steven Corriveau, Thomas Kalar, Lauren Corriveau Minkel, and Chelle Schutzman. 21 Children, Youth, and Families

Social Jus ce/outreach Social Jus ce/outreach: Peter Troop From A Communiqué: Transforma on through Friendship Oct 10, 2014, General Theological Seminary, New York City: "...in the Anglican Communion, we have had the experience of together reconciling the world to Christ in diverse and crea ve ways. It is what we call mission, which is grounded in the holy and transforming friendship that comes through our common life in Christ." Dra ed and signed by six Primates and four Bishops from around the communion, including: The Rt. Rev. Mary Gray-Reeves, the Rt. Rev. Ogé Beauvoir Bishop Suffragan of Hai, the Most Rev. Jacob Chimeledya Archbishop of Tanzania, the Most Rev. Thabo Makgoba Archbishop of Southern Africa and the Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church. In 2014, St. Jude s Social Jus ce/outreach effort encouraged and supported mission close to home, within our na onal church and the greater Anglican Communion. It is noteworthy that the conversa ons that led to the October communiqué included five church leaders who touch people and concerns aligned with the St. Jude's parish community. It is personal commitment, and the ini a ve of parishioners, that helps sustain our parish community s tradi on of outreach and engagement with social jus ce. Consider ways you can be involved in Bishop Mary calls on parishes not only to sustain, but to look for ways to expand their ministry to restore the community of Christ. In Mission close to home, parishioners par cipate in community programs that serve the disadvantaged, youth and seniors, including: Santa Maria Urban Ministry - mentoring, educa on, technical support St. Jude's Veteran s Group - outreach to homeless veterans at HomeFirst Live Oak Adult Day Services - campus partners, program volunteers Correc ons Ins tu ons Chaplaincy - nurturing purpose and hope among Santa Clara County jail inmates San Jose Family Shelter - dinner prepara on and fellowship with residents Our Daily Bread - providing hot lunches and fellowship Employment Assistance Ministry - in partnership with Career Ac ons Network West Valley Community Services - food pantry and other programs St. Jude's con nues its response to the call of the Na onal Church to engage the Millennium Development Goals and build partnerships with the Diocese of Hai. Our parish community also provides annual support to Bishop Mary and the Diocese of El Camino Real's companion rela onship with the Diocese of Western Tanganyika, in Tanzania. In 2014, St. Jude s volunteers began to host Café DeAnza, a coffee with WiFi op on for DeAnza students, and a small parish food pantry was begun. Parishioners con nued their project par cipa on with Rotary and others including Habitat for Humanity and Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley. We hosted new evening, and Sunday a ernoon events at St. Jude's that drew people from outside our parish community to movie screenings and conversa ons that addressed ma ers of social jus ce, spirituality and public policy. In support of mission, volunteers and community engagement in 2014 on behalf of the parish community the St. Jude s Social Jus ce/outreach Commi ee allocated last year s Vestry provided parish budget for outreach as follows: 22

Social Jus ce/outreach Following vestry approval in January 2014, the communi es of St. Jude's parish and St. Patrick's school and mission entered into a five-year covenant to build rela onships, learn from one another, and help maintain and strengthen the educa on provided by St. Patrick's school. During the February visit of Father Amirold Lazard, our clergy partner in Hai, the covenant was formally signed. From the covenant between St. Jude's and St. Patrick's: Our collec ve efforts are intended to contribute to the Episcopal Diocese of Hai and help be er the lives of the people of Hai. Through this covenant our parish is directly engaging the Millennium Development Goals and is part of a very purposeful effort in response to the call of the Na onal Church to support the Episcopal Diocese of Hai - the largest Diocese in our Church - and the people and communi es it serves. (To view the complete covenant, go to the Saint Patrick School Hai page, under the Outreach tab, on the St. Jude s Web site.) In 2014, the Social Jus ce Outreach commi ee allocated outreach funds of: $5,500 towards staff salaries; $3,500 towards school expansion / buildings and infrastructure needs Repair of failing walls and reroofing classroom buildings is a cri cal need at the school. Over the last two years, dona ons from parishioners have grown the amount available for buildings and infrastructure to more than $40,000 - the target to allow needed structural repairs to go forward in Over $100,000 has been raised on behalf of Saint-Patrick School and Mission since Liz Jones' and Dianne Rhudy's ini al visit in October Four categories for fundraising have been set to support the rela onship between St Jude's and the people of Saint-Patrick. Including classrooms to add grade levels, cooking facili es, latrines Enhanced learning environment - Textbooks, study materials, supplemental books, classroom enrichment, teacher training Financial aid for con nuing studies - for students who have graduated from Saint-Patrick. To enable Fr. Amirold Lazard to help proficient students advance. St. Jude's covenant with Saint-Patrick contributes to the Episcopal Diocese of Hai 's commitment to educa on. The stated objec ves of the Diocese are to: Work at elimina ng poverty by increasing educa onal service Fight injus ce and par cipate in the crea on of a more peaceful and just world by priori zing educa on and training of the youth Promote educa on for all by providing a democra zed quality educa on Work in partnership with all organiza ons regardless of their creed and poli cal affilia on in order to promote the freedom provided by knowledge St. Patrick's School is in Locorbe, Hai, a remote area of the Central Plateau. Without electricity, or running water, the school serves some 200 Pre-K through 6th grade students from subsistence farming families who live on less than $2 a day. Approximately half of school-aged children in Hai are not in school. St. Patrick's school is part of the commitment of the Episcopal Diocese of Hai to provide educa on in rural areas that otherwise are without schools. 24
