1 S t. Jude s Episcopal Church, Cupertino, CA November 2014, Vol. 31, No. 11 Living in Gratitude Gree ngs all! By the me you read this we will have celebrated our Stewardship Sunday and ingathering of pledges and it s not too late if you haven t pledged yet. We will have celebrated St. Jude, our saint who gives hope to the hopeless, and celebrated my 2 nd anniversary of arriving at St. Jude s, by bringing food for local food banks. Many of you a ended the open house at my home to celebrate these markers. A big thank you! To all who make the con nuing ministry of St. Jude s possible, to all who support my ministry in so many different ways, I am grateful! In November we march towards Thanksgiving holidays and the rest of the year. We ask ourselves where the year has gone and can feel quite stressed. At this me of year I remind myself that no ma er how challenged I am, gra tude is transforming! In October I began a prac ce of pos ng my #1 gra tude for the day each day on Facebook. Well I did miss some days, on which I remembered while closing my eyes to sleep at night that I had forgo en to post a gra tude. It was wonderful to see others pos ng their own daily gra tudes. I met someone who said that part of their daily prac ce is to think just before they go to sleep, of ten things they are grateful for every day. That s a way to approach a good night s sleep! I m going to try that in this month of Thanksgiving celebra ons. I believe it transforms our outlook and can help us through our mes of challenges. I invite you to try it too. 2 As you probably know, Beth has been struggling with chronic migraines for the past month and so is unable to write her usual column. She was in the hospital receiving a strong medica on that needed her monitored while being administered. I visited her and took her communion, and she was doing a li le be er. We will wait and see how it goes. She thanks everyone for their support and prayers. Please do keep her, Sameer, Ani and Sachi in your prayers. We will let you know if there are prac cal ways to express our support. If you are involved with any ministry that Beth is connected to, please direct any ques ons to myself or Linda Morris, rather than to Beth. At this point I am talking with various people and making ways to support ministry leaders and to ensure that the ongoing work can get done. I am exploring possibili es of help. This is a me we will need to stretch. We pray that God gives us the wisdom and strength we need. I appreciate all your prayers and support very much. They reported back to the vestry on September 30 th, and the work con nued at the October vestry mee ng. It s me now to report back to the parish and get your feedback. Please save these dates: Sunday, November 2: 9:15 am at the adult forum Wednesday, Nov 5: 7:00 pm-9:00 pm Sunday, Nov 16: 4:00 pm-6:00 pm Thursday, Nov 20: 7:00 pm-9:00 pm There is much to share and the presenta on will include feedback from the survey. This is the first stage of the discernment process, designed to bring to the parish the broad areas that will be our focus. The second stage involves making concrete goals based on these areas. The forum will give us just enough me to report back and only a brief me for ques- ons and discussion. The other presenta ons will give us a lot longer me for discussion. We hope that you can a end at least one of these events. Please con nue to pray for this process, as discernment con nues over the next months. Page 3 November 2014 the View

4 Stewardship It s not too late to turn in your pledge card. You can do it online by going to the website and using the 2015 pledge bu on. Or you can pick up a pledge card from the pew or the Farmhouse. You can also call the office and we will mail you one. Café De Anza Study Hall Wireless Project Café De Anza Study Hall has go en off to a good start. There is a team of fi een volunteers with Mary Mackenzie as coordinator. Most of the volunteers are members of the church, but one found her way through a clergy group that Wilma a ends. Weekly, they average about eight to twelve individual students, many of whom come back on a semiregular basis. There are sixteen students who have come at least once and signed our code of conduct. While this turn out is small, everyone is hopeful that as the word con nues to get out, more people will show up. The ways the students have heard about us is varied: word of mouth, cards and half sheet fliers, our signage. One gentlemen, Darrell, came over for Café De Anza study hall, and ended up finding the Wednesday noon healing service as well. We are working on ge ng the word out around campus, and making connec ons at De Anza College. Wilma con- nues to make connec ons at De Anza on a weekly basis, and Mary joins as she is able when not working various shi s. Last week, in order to network with people who work with the popula on at De Anza that we are targe ng, Wilma and Mary went to a lecture on campus hosted by several of the departments that we are in contact with. Beth, Wilma and Mary have also handed out our li le green cards giving the basic informa on of Café De Anza to De Anza Students at college. The students we have seem to enjoy having a quiet place, off campus to study. Planned Giving Planning Tip of the Month Ge ng Your Stuff Together Having an estate plan is not just for the elderly, as there are no warran es on the lives of any of us. Make 2014 the year you get your stuff up to snuff. The primary goals of estate planning are to (1) protect your dependents if something should happen to you and (2) transfer your assets at end of life in accordance with your wishes, with minimum administra on expenses and taxes. When properly done, estate planning can avoid (expensive) probate and facilitate family harmony a er your death. Taking me to get your affairs in order is one of the best gi s you can give your family. So, you may ask, what documents are needed in order to have a complete estate plan? Basic estate planning documents include a will, and in some cases a trust, a durable power of a orney, and a living will/health care direc ve. It is wise to have these documents reviewed at least every five years, or more frequently when Congress passes a new tax law or if you have a significant life event in your family such as a birth, death, re rement, or children reaching age 18. For more informa on on where to start in making sure your plans are up to date, or including St. Jude s in them, your Planned Giving Commi ee can help you get started with the resources we have available through the Episcopal Church Founda on (ECF). Check out the new edi ons of ECF brochures on our tract rack in the parish hall. Of course, consul ng your lawyer and financial planner, if you have one, is also highly recommended. 5 Taizé prayer services Candlelight, contempla ve, musical, medita ve, the Taizé prayer services always provide a peaceful space in the midst of our busy lives. Taizé prayer services take place on Tuesday evenings, 6:30 pm to 7:15 pm. If you need to come late or leave early that is fine. It is an easy service to slip in and out of as needed, without being no ced or causing a disturbance. Even a ending for five minutes will make a difference as you sing a song or say a prayer. If you would like to sing a cantor part, or play an instrument, or help to set up or clear away (it is simple and takes about five to ten minutes) please speak to Wilma. Morning Prayer Join us for Weekday Morning Prayer: 9:15 am to 9:35 am, in the sanctuary near the apricot window. Try it out on a day of the week that suits you. The leadership is shared. Let Wilma know if you would like to lead - there is an easy to follow template. In the mean me, there is a morning prayer link on the website. If you may pray as part of our online community at: Stephen Ministry By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. John 13:35 Be completely humble and gentle; be pa ent, bearing with one another in love. Ephesians 4:2 Why Stephen Ministry? Stephen Ministry was founded as an interna onal organiza on in order to fill a gap in many church s ability to care for hur ng people in their communi es. People needed more focused care than a friend could offer but less than a mental health professional could provide. While priests and ministers provide pastoral care, they o en cannot provide care to all who need support on an ongoing basis. In recogni on of such needs, St. Jude s joined Stephen Ministry over 10 years ago. Trained Stephen Ministers are available at St. Jude s to walk along side stressed and worried people as they try to gain strength to handle trying situa ons or to rebuild their lives a er a crisis. Stephen Ministers strictly honor confiden ality and are nonjudgmental. There is no charge for having a Stephen Minister and they are available to parishioners here at St. Jude s, to members of other churches, and to friends, family members, and acquaintances of church members. If you or someone you know could benefit from the Chris- an caregiving of a Stephen Minister, please contact Judy Bailey at (650) or by at jdthbail@aol.com. We have the 2015 master calendar posted. Feel free to come in and mark your regular mee ng dates on it. Remember: there is NO longer a permanent calendar, except for classroom usage, so everything needs to be marked on the calendar. Addi onally effec ve immediately: ***There is a new procedure for any Saturday or Sunday events. Wilma needs to approve usage for any weekend events so that we can make sure our facili es are available for our specific usage. There are lime green slips above the calendar to fill out and place in Wilma s mailbox. 6 Library News Media Upgrades in the Library Most of our media collec on is s ll on increasingly obsolete VHS and audiocasse e formats. We are making a concerted effort to replace the most circulated and relevant items with CDs and DVDs. Media for Children We are gradually replacing a significant number of Veggie Tales VHS tapes. Veggie Tales is a classic series of children s animated stories that convey Chris an moral themes. First developed in 1983, the series features humorous vegetable characters that are pop culture savvy and sing silly songs. Originally shown on NBC, and later on TBN, Veggie Tales have also been streamed on Ne lix in recent years. In fact, Ne lix is developing new programs in the series to be released later this year. This series will be called Veggie Tales on the House. We have an increasing number of DVD s from the original 45 programs that were originally on VHS including Where is God When I m Scared? Moe and the Big Exit, (about Easter) and Rack, Shack, and Bennie. The la er DVD deals with the topic of peer pressure. We have also recently acquired DVD s from two other series: Simon the Lamb from Precious Moments and Being Kind and Caring from Paws and Tales. Please check these out and give us feedback. Should we purchase others in these series? Media for Adults We are also acquiring inspira onal DVDs for adults and are open to sugges ons about movies or documentary films you might recommend. New films include: Les Miserables, Schindler's List, The Shawshank Redemp on, Dead Man Walking, The Green Mile, and Heaven is for Real. Look for them both on the book cart, and in the farmhouse on the top shelf of the children s sec on. Children, Youth and Families Nov. 2: The annual Candy Tithe will take place in the 10:30 am service. Kids who trick-or-treat on Halloween are invited to set aside 10% of what they receive and bring it to church to put it in labeled bins in the Narthex. Nov. 16: Faith-Full Families meets at 6 pm in the Parish Hall. Families with children ages 3-12 are welcome and encouraged to a end for food, fellowship and a Thanksgiving- themed ac vity. 7 Vestry Notes The vestry met on Tuesday, 21st October, 2014 a er the regular Taizé service. At 7:30 Howard Hill (Senior Warden) opened the mee ng with a reflec on. Highlights from the rest of the mee ng were: Rector s Comments: Wilma gave a brief update, asking con nuing prayers for Beth who is suffering from migraines and had to be briefly hospitalized. Leadership Succession: Mike Landis reported on the status of this goal carried over from 2013 vestry. In March Mike had surveyed all ministry leaders from the ministry booklet and received about 45 out of 50 responses. Most leaders requested addi onal support, and about 16 are ready to pass on leadership. However, only a few leaders have completed a posi on descrip on as the first step for finding somebody to take over. In June, he suspended further work un l a er the Mission Discernment was done. Vestry agreed that leadership succession remains a cri cal goal and that part of it is encouraging new volunteers. Both of these needs are high priori es in the Mission Covenant. Mission Discernment Update: Wilma circulated an updated version of the Mission Covenant which she, Liz Jones, and Terri Hoornstra have edited. Wilma has also circulated the dra to Bishop Mary and to Lisa He (the consultant from the Parish Day.) In response to a request by Jeffrey Pugh, there was discussion and some disagreement about the length, level of detail, and form of the financial goal in the Mission Covenant and in the summary. Wilma and Jeffrey agreed to dra addi onal language and goals for electronic review by the vestry. Parish presenta ons have been scheduled for Sunday, November 2nd (9:15 am forum); Wednesday, November 5th 7:00 to-9:00 pm; Sunday, November 16th 4:00 pm to - 6:00 pm and Thursday, November 20th 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The Mission Covenant will also be published on the website with the ability for parishioner comments. In response to a ques on from Mar n Belles, Wilma clarified that vestry would take into account significant discussion or disagreement from parishioners before the final version was presented at Annual Mee ng in Quarterly Financials: Liz presented the quarterly balance sheet and income statement which were accepted by the vestry. At this point, Liz is an cipa ng we will end 2014 in reasonable financial condi on. Stewardship Update: Rasika Weerasooriya thanked Pat Coles, Juneann McDonald, Terri, Donna and all others who assisted with a successful Harvest Dinner. We have received 35 pledges (including 16 online) for about $155,000; 8 addi onal pledges in Sunday s plate have not been counted yet. The vestry reciprocated the thanks to Rasika for taking on chairing stewardship for this year. Old Business: Howard presented proposed changes to the St. Jude s Bylaws which would clarify vestry vo ng rules, including allowing any vestry member to call for supermajority vo ng. These will be voted on by the Parish at the 2015 Annual Mee ng. Wilma reported that we would be interviewing a candidate for the unpaid posi on of Assis ng Priest (intended to provide the help that previously was done by Bob Mayer and Bob Hansen.) New Business: Howard noted that the Mutual Ministry Review would be held in December, with vestry input at the November mee ng. Wilma encouraged a endance at the next three Diocesan Kaleidoscope trainings, star ng October 25th. Becky Smith is coordina ng. Wilma reported on a responsible, needy De Anza student who will graduate in June, but needs a place to live un l then. Vestry approved asking parishioners to consider providing this student with room and board un l June, and failing that offering him the op on of sleeping in the Fireside Room (for which there is precedent). Anybody interested should contact Wilma. The mee ng closed at 10:20 pm with the Lord s Prayer. This is the me of year when we no longer deadhead the roses around the campus so they can store up for the winter. In early January we are looking for folks to spend a few hours helping to prune our 45 or so roses. If you are able to lend a hand please let the office know. Page 7 November 2014 the View

8 Mission in Haiti... Very near a green light for long needed classroom repair Generous dona ons from St. Jude's parishioners have brought the fund for classroom repairs at St. Patrick's School to within $5,000 of the needed $40,000 budget. Success in a final effort to close the gap will allow construc on to start early in Cracks in the outer classroom walls have been a worrisome safety concern for over five years. But, with the first priority of our partnership being teacher salaries of $1,200 a month, capital expenditures have been out of reach. This began to change last Advent season, and since Fr. Lazard's visit to St. Jude's in February, with receipt of several parishioner dona ons restricted to use for structural needs at St. Patrick. These dona ons have grown the balance available from an ini al alloca on of $9,874 made by the Social Jus ce Outreach commi ee in At St. Patrick's, the effort to launch repair and re-roofing of its two classroom buildings gained special urgency last February a er the collapse of a storeroom wall led the school to abandon its sixth grade classroom, because concern for its safety. To learn more about this effort contact either Liz Jones, Peter Troop or Dianne Rhudy. Dona ons to help the community of Saint Patrick can be made to St. Jude's.
