The Lesson: 1 Samuel 3:1-10 Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called, Samuel! Samuel! and he said, Here I am! and ran to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call; lie down again. So he went and lay down. The Lord called again, Samuel! Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call, my son; lie down again. Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, Samuel! Samuel! And Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening. After the lesson the reader says: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. People: Thanks be to God. Psalm 139:1-5, Lord, you have searched me out and known me; * you know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar. 2 You trace my journeys and my resting-places * and are acquainted with all my ways. 3 Indeed, there is not a word on my lips, * but you, O Lord, know it altogether. 4 You press upon me behind and before * and lay your hand upon me. 5 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; * it is so high that I cannot attain to it. 12 For you yourself created my inmost parts; * you knit me together in my mother s womb. 13 I will thank you because I am marvelously made; * your works are wonderful, and I know it well. 14 My body was not hidden from you, * while I was being made in secret and woven in the depths of the earth. 15 Your eyes beheld my limbs, yet unfinished in the womb; all of them were written in your book; * they were fashioned day by day, when as yet there was none of them. 16 How deep I find your thoughts, O God! * how great is the sum of them! 17 If I were to count them, they would be more in number than the sand; * to count them all, my life span would need to be like yours. 4

Hymn: Alleluia sing twice Taizé The Gospel: Mark 2:23 3:6 Minister: The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Mark. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. One Sabbath Jesus and his disciples were going through the grain fields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath? And he said to them, Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and he gave some to his companions. Then he said to them, The Sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the Sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath. Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. They watched him to see whether he would cure him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him. And he said to the man who had the withered hand, Come forward. Then he said to them, Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save life or to kill? But they were silent. He looked around at them with anger; he was grieved at their hardness of heart and said to the man, Stretch out your hand. He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately conspired with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him. Minister: The Gospel of the Savior. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ. Hymn: Alleluia sing twice The Sermon Taizé Sarah Lapenta-H (Silence is observed after the sermon for meditation or reflection) 5

Prayers of the People Almighty God, ruler of heaven and earth, strengthen us as we pray for the needs of your creation, saying: Divine Spirit, Our Helper, our hope is in you. Hear our prayers for those who have died, those who are dying, and all those who love them, including and those we name now Divine Spirit, Our Helper, our hope is in you. We give thanks to you for your goodness in our lives, especially for our nursery staff and Godly Play teachers; for the abundance of our physical space to learn, worship, and have fun together, as well as and those we name now Divine Spirit, Our Helper, our hope is in you. Divine Spirit, Our Helper, you love and know us very well. Hear our prayers and make us faithful stewards of all the goodness and opportunities in our lives. In thought, word, and deed may we reflect your grace and love to all those we meet. In your holy name we pray, Amen. Confession (kneel or sit as you are able) Presbyterian Church USA Youth Ministry Almighty God, we are not always people who live by faith. We know that we were created in your image, but we treat ourselves and each other in ways that do not honor your presence within us. We know your laws and your commandments, but we choose to disobey you and to act in ways that harm our neighbors. We hear your call to reach out to those most in need, but instead we turn our backs on them and on you. Forgive us, O God, and help us day by day to become more faithful followers and the people you created us to be. In the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen. Assurance of Pardon Celebrant: What we have hoped for is true. What we cannot see has been made known. God s forgiveness is certain and sure. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! People: Thanks be to God! The Peace (Please offer the Peace to those nearby.) Celebrant: The peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And also with you. Prayer for Healing (kneel as you are able) Those who are unable to get to the altar rail are invited to stand in their places, and others around them are invited to lay hands on them during the prayer. O God, the source of all health: So fill our hearts with faith in your love, that with calm expectancy we may make room for your power to possess us, and gracefully accept your healing; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 6

Blessing for Celebrations (kneel as you are able) Loving Creator, You are the source of life and the source of love. We thank you for all who celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and special events today. Watch over them as their days increase, bless and guide them wherever they may be. May your peace which passes understanding abide all the days of their lives, and may your love for the world shine through them and the deep relationships they cherish, through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Prayer for graduates Author of Life, Architect of our souls, our hearts are filled with gratitude for our youth and friends who now stand on the threshold of adult life. We have watched them grow and learn, rise to numerous challenges and celebrate many accomplishments. They have been discerning who they are in this world and to what You are calling them. We ask Your blessing now, as they commence a new chapter of their life s journey, that they feel Your presence with them wherever their paths may turn. May they have courage to meet adversity, integrity when speaking their truth, and compassion that moves them to action for justice. We ask this all for Your love s sake, through Jesus Christ. Amen. Minute for Ministry: Recognition of the Godly Play volunteers and leaders. The Holy Communion Offertory Sentence Choir Offertory: This Little Light of Mine/Shine Your Light on Me with cots (Children of the Spirit) Presentation: Doxology arr. Laura Green Eric Law (Please stand as the usher presents the gifts at the altar.) Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Circling through earth so all may grow. Vanquishing fear so all may give. Widening Grace so all may live. Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give our thanks and praise. St. Nyssa God, whose love knows no limit, when you spoke your Word into darkness, sun, moon and stars shone forth, seas teemed with life and the play of Leviathan. Mountains rose, earth sprouted grass and trees; Lambs jumped, birds soared, wolves howled and people joined in singing creation s hymn as now we praise and bless you: 7

WLP 852 Blessed are you, holy God, for Jesus the Christ who healed the sick, spoke truth to power, loved the unloved, and promised the coming of your new community. The night before he died, when Jesus was at supper with his friends, he took bread and gave you thanks, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, saying: Take, eat: This is my Body given for you. Do this to remember me. When supper was ended, Jesus took a cup of wine, thanked you, and gave it to his friends saying: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood, poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this to remember me. Life-giving God we ask you now to bless these our gifts of bread and wine and make them holy. Fill us with the joy of the Holy Spirit as we receive this bread and wine and then send us out in peace to share your love with the world. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. Amen. 8

The Contemporary Lord s Prayer As our Savior Christ has taught us, we pray in the language or version of our choice: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.
