But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather serve one another through love. Galatians 5:13 We like to celebrate the fact that we are free to live the good life. But Jesus calls us to a different kind of freedom. St. Paul reminds us that Jesus sets us free so that we can serve one another, share our gifts and promote God s work here on earth to glorify His name and not honor ourselves. 3 THE 2013 FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM and THE CALL TO PRAYER: In today s bulletin, you will notice the next two inserts (parts two and three of the five part series) entitled Same Sex Marriage: Thinking It Through published by the Archdiocese s Office of Laity and Family Life. The final two parts will be included next weekend. I hope that they are helping you to better appreciate our Church s stance on this important issue. Please note, however, that, while these inserts are meant to be very clear in explaining our Church s belief about marriage and human sexuality, they in no way are intended to demean those with a same-sex attraction. To make that clear, you will find below part of a note sent to the priests of our Archdiocese by our Auxiliary Bishop Edward Rice and by Father Brian Fischer who heads the Archdiocese s Youth Apostolate about our stance concerning the Boy Scouts of America s recent decision to allow scouts with same-sex attraction into scout troops, a notice published also in our Archdiocesan paper, The St. Louis Review. This explanation makes very clear our firm belief in the worth of every human, no matter who they are: Recently the Boy Scouts of America announced a change in their membership policy. We want you to be aware of this policy change and how we as the Church are responding. Archdiocese Statement regarding the membership policy: The Archdiocese of St. Louis takes Catholic faith and formation of young people very seriously. The decision of BSA regarding youth and same-sex attraction does not change our responsibility to uphold the truths of our faith and to offer faith-formation programs based on those truths, which we will continue to do. As Catholics, we believe that a proper understanding of Theology of the Body, as taught by Pope John Paul II, offers truth about the beauty and sanctity of human sexuality. We welcome opportunities to proclaim the Gospel call to conversion. We agree with Pope Emeritus Benedict when he said, Every human being is loved by God the Father. No one need feel forgotten, for every name is written in the Lord s loving heart. We encourage Catholics and all people of faith to treat one another with respect, dignity and love and to pray for our culture. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that individuals who disclose a homosexual inclination or a same sex attraction are to be treated with the same dignity due all human beings created by God. (CCC 2358). This teaching is followed in enrollment policies for Catholic schools, for Catholic sports programs, and for all programs of Catholic youth ministry. Scouting, as Catholic youth ministry, allows us to provide a safe environment in which the Catholic faith can be taught, practiced and nurtured. Scouting, as a program for all youth, gives us, as Catholics, the opportunity to meet youth in an activity they enjoy and evangelize them in our faith. A HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY TO YOU ALL: We have much to celebrate as citizens of this country. This holiday gives us the chance 1) to remember the values and principles on which it was built, 2) to remember the lengths that the generations before us went to and sacrifices that they made to defend our country, as well as 3) to embrace in our own time those same values and principles and to recommit ourselves to that same spirit of sacrifice. If you can, please join us here at our one Mass on Thursday at 9:00 AM because we, indeed, have much to celebrate. A PRAYER AS WE CELEBRATE INDEPENDENCE DAY: For use at your main meal on Thursday: God, source of all freedom, this day is bright with the memory of those who declared that life and liberty are your gift to every human being. Help us to continue a good work begun long ago. Make our vision clear and our will strong that only in human solidarity will we find liberty, and justice only in the honor that belongs to every life on earth. Turn our hearts toward the family of nations: to understand the ways of others, to offer friendship, and to find safety only in the common good of all. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. GIT-R-DONE #1: This is the very familiar saying by the comedian Larry the Cable Guy (did you know that his real name is Daniel Lawrence Whitney?). I m happy to report to you that we Got-R-Done with regard to the new carpet in our Weekday Mass Chapel, in our Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, in the hall leading to it, and in our Music Director s office. Thanks to all those who helped to get that work done, in particular by moving all that furniture and by painting Carrie s office. The carpet type is fittingly titled Serenity pretty good for chapels dealing with the Eucharist. We also added a pad to it which is noticeable when you kneel (please, no bare feet though). GIT-R-DONE #2: I m happy to report to you a second Got-R-Done with regard to our Vacation Bible School last week. What a great time it was, and our children really benefited from the help of all those who volunteered. THIS WEDNESDAY S SPECIAL MASS WITH ARCHBISHOP CARLSON and A BUS RIDE TO GET THERE: Please remember that we are offering bus transportation to the special Mass about the Fortnight for Freedom at the Cathedral Basilica this Wednesday, July 3, for those who would like to go to that Mass but don t want to drive. We plan to leave at 10:30 AM in front of the Parish Office and to return shortly after that Mass is concluded. To help defray the cost of that bus, we would ask that you donate $10 per person. To insure a spot on that bus, simply contact our Parish Office either by phone at or by at cindy@saintcletus.org. by this Monday so we can know if there is sufficient interest in our reserving that bus. If there is not, the bus will be cancelled.

4 In today's Gospel we see how Jesus, on his way to Jerusalem, sent a "messenger on ahead of Him." To be the messengers of God, we must know well what it is God wants to say and do through us, as he sends us out to bring his love to others. Through your gifts, you enable our conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to bring the love of God to the poor who live among us here in St. Charles. Thank You! Eucharistic Adoration "Know that you will probably gain more by praying fifteen minutes before the Blessed Sacrament than by all the other spiritual exercises of the day. True, Our Lord hears our prayers anywhere, for He has made the promise, 'Ask, and you shall receive,' but He has revealed to His servants that those who visit Him in the Blessed Sacrament will obtain a more abundant measure of grace." - St. Alphonsus Liguori Come and visit with Jesus anytime! The hours needed to be filled are: Thursday 2:00pm and Friday mornings 1am, 2am. If you would like to spend time with Jesus and commit to an hour please call or (There is a code to access in the evening and late hours so give us a call or you may contact the Parish Office.) Thank you! STITCHES FOR LIFE will sell raffle tickets for a queen size quilt, 4 baby quilts, 1 baby afghan, 2 sets of embroidered pillowcases and a child's embroidered apron. The tickets will be sold in our Church s Gathering Space before and after Mass on June Proceeds will benefit our St. Vincent de Paul Society Conference s work with the poor of our area. We are also in the process of making small bears for the St. Charles County Ambulance District and various fire departments. COURAGEOUS, The Movie In our Parish Hall on Sunday, July 14, at 7:00 PM, we will show Courageous. Produced by the same people who made Fireproof, this PG-13 rated movie is described as: Four men, one calling: To serve and protect. As law enforcement officers, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, David Thomson, and Shane Fuller are confident and focused. Yet at the end of the day, they face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle: fatherhood. While they consistently give their best on the job, good enough seems to be all they can muster as dads. But they're quickly discovering that their standard is missing the mark. Please note too that we will have an ice cream social afterwards! How can you go wrong by coming?
