REVIVE Preaching Series: Sept. 10-Nov. 19, 2017 This fall we are reviving some of the texts and teachings of Martin Luther as we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Gracious God, you are our hope and our joy, We come to praise and thank you. Healing God, we come together in our brokenness, Hear our silent confession and make us whole again with your healing power. Time for silent confession Sisters and Brothers, hear the Good News. 4 Prayer of the Day God of joy and power, you have called us to stand at the ready so that we may engage fully in your life saving work. Thank you for empowering all your people to join in the mission of love. Give us faith to believe that your love can be accomplished in our lives. Amen First Lesson 2 Corinthians 12:7b-10 To keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness. So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today. So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. All who saw it began to grumble and said, He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner. Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much. Then Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost. Praise to you, O Christ. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
