1 First Presbyterian Church of Litchfield, MN JULY 2016 NEWSLETTER Pastor Gordy s Message By Pastor Gordy Pennertz Verse for July: So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest-time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith. Galatians 6: 9-10 My dear friends, July is a quiet month for First Presbyterian. Committees are quiet and session is not meeting. We are not shutting things down however. There will be home communions, two Bible Studies and of course we will worship every Sunday morning. The Sabbath is a day of rest. God commanded the Israelite people to observe every Saturday as a day where no work was done. In our busy, busy world today, Sabbath observance is the exception rather than the rule. But a time of rest, relaxation, restoration is critical to our health. Illnesses, disease, sickness result from neglecting our rest. Perhaps we can look at this July as a kind of Sabbath month, a time for us to make church less about the tasks we need to get done and more about worship, fellowship and the joy of the Lord. May God bless you as you celebrate the nation's independence. May we recognize more clearly our place as children of God as we take time to be still and know that the Lord is God. Grace and peace, Pastor Gordy Upcoming events: (Reminder, no session meeting in July) Sunday July 3 God Bless America service of Word and Music Monday, July 4 th, Independence Day Wednesday, July 6 Home communions Wednesday, July 13 The Story Bible Study Sunday, July 24 Wellness prayer service Wednesday, July 27 The Story Bible Study 14-Rosie Graphenteen 17-Luciella Rose Viehauser 17-Doug & Laurie Johnson BIRTHDAYS & ANNIVERSARIES: 4-Jim Lundberg 5-Emily Morrison 20-Pastor Gordy and Julie Rae Pennertz 21-Carol Blunt 21-Savannah Joldersma 23-David Pennertz (30 th ) 24-Wade Viehauser JULY SERVING

6 We were happy to have Shirley Good back in church with us after a month long battle with pneumonia! Take care Shirley! Do you have any news? Illnesses, joys, grandbabies etc? WE would love to share your information with everyone in our church family so they can pray for you and rejoice with you! Let Julie Rae know. Thanks and blessings! America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves. Abraham Lincoln Service to God and Country I showered and shaved. I adjusted my tie. I got there and sat. In a pew, just in time. Bowing my head in prayer, as I closed my eyes, I saw the shoes of the man next to me. Touching my own, I sighed. With plenty of room on either side I thought, Why must our soles touch? It bothered me, his shoe touching mine. But it didn t bother him much. A prayer began: Our Father, I thought, This man with the shoes has no pride. They re dusty, worn and scratched. Even worse, there are holes on the side! Thank you for the blessings.. the prayer went on. The shoe man said a quiet Amen as I tried to focus on the prayer. But my thoughts were on the shoes again. Aren t we supposed to look our best when walking through that door? Well, this certainly isn t it, I thought, glancing toward the floor. Then the prayer was ended and the songs of praise began. The shoe man was certainly loud, sounding proud as he sang. His voice lifted the rafters, his hands were raised high. The Lord could surely hear, the shoe man s voice from the sky. It was time for the offering and what I threw in was steep. I watched as the shoeman reached into his pockets so deep. I saw what he pulled out, what he put in, then I herad the soft clink as silver hit the tin. The sermon really bored me to tears, and that s no lie. It was the same for the shoe man as tears fell from his eyes. AS the end of the service as is custom here, we must greet new visitors and show them good cheer. But I felt moved somehow, and wanted to meet the shoe man. So after the closing prayer I reached over and shook his hand. He was old and his skin was dark, and his hair was truly a mess. But, I thanked him for coming and for being our guest. He said, My name is Charlie and I am glad to meet you my friend. There were tears in his eyes, but he had a large grin. Let me explain, he said, wiping tears from his eyes. I ve been coming here for months and you re the first to say hi. I know my appearance is not like all the rest, but I really do try to look my best. I always clean and polish my shoes before my long walk, but by the time I get here they are dirty, like chalk. My heart filled with pain and I swallowed to hide my tears, as he continued to apologize for daring to sit so near. He said, When I get here I know I must look a sight, but I thought if I
7 could touch you, then maybe our souls would unite. I was silent for a moment, knowing whatever was said would pale in comparison. I spoke from my heart and not from my head, Oh, you have touched me, I said, And taught me, in part, that the best of any man is what is found in his heart. The rest I thought, this shoe man will never know. Like just how thankful I really am, that his dirty shoe touched my soul. It seems there once was a man who was an officer in the British Cavalry and he was sent to serve England in the Crimean War. There he became a part of history as one of the many ill-fated souls involved in the now famous Charge of the Light Brigade. Fortunately this soldier survived, but the scars on his soul would everafter not heal. The trauma of being in the midst of such carnage made him long for one thing: peace. After the war he tried to find peace in his native land, but, disillusioned, finally left to travel across the sea and start anew in the fresh, sun-scrubbed skies of America. Upon arrival he began a trek to discover the place that would be his home a place where peace would reign supreme. By the late 1850 s he found and purchase a small farm in the Virginia countryside that had become all he had hoped for. There was only one problem the farm on which he had chosen to retire was an area called Bull Run. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27 Lord, make me an intrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy. -St Francis of Asisi Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God, through our Lord, Jesus Chrust, through whom we have gained access by faith into His grace in which we now stand. Romans 5:1-2
