Beginning the Narrative Mission Study We begin the Narrative Mission Study with informal small group meetings in homes that begin Oct. 15 and will be completed by Oct. 29. These meetings are being organized by Elders and Deacons with invitations being sent out over the next few weeks, so please look for your invitation. In the meantime, please take a moment to read the story about how Penfield Presbyterian Church began first in the 19 th Century, then in the 20 th Century. Copies of this history will be included as a separate attachment with the e-news and will also be available in the foyer for you to pick up and read. As you read consider how you might answer the following questions: 1. Why did a Presbyterian Church come into being in Penfield? 2. What was important about the first church having a handicap accessible entrance and pew? 3. When you think about these Genesis stories what biblical story comes to mind? There will be a congregational meeting on Sunday Oct 14th at 9:45 am for the election of two elders, who will then be installed during worship.

2 SUNDAY ADULT EDUCATION The Sunday Adult Education class is viewing and discussing a Great Courses DVD lecture series Jesus and His Jewish Influences. The lecturer is Jodi Magness, Ph.D., Professor of Teaching Excellence in Early Judaism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Professor Magness has been lecturer of other Great Courses offerings the class has previously viewed and discussed and is a renowned archeologist. Her presentation style is clear and deliberate. Today s lecture is The United and Divided Israelite Kingdoms deals with the history and archeology of the kingdom of Saul, David, and Solomon; its division into the kingdoms of Israel and Judah and their troubled history; the mystery of the Lost Tribes of Israel ; and the story of Beelzebub and the concept of the devil. It is altogether a fascinating presentation. The class meets after worship at 11:30 in Room 4. Everyone from 16 to 66 plus is welcome. For further information, please see Charles Griffith. Because of the Harvest Team luncheon, there will be no class on Sunday, October 7. The next class will be on Sunday, October 14. The lecture will be The Destruction of Solomon s Temple dealing with the reign and death of King Josiah, the meaning of Armageddon, the destruction of the first Temple, and the Babylonian Exile. Safe Ministries Team - Who we are and what we do. The Safe Ministries Team is co-chaired by John Cox and Doug Fox and includes members Jay Wheaton, Mindy Shaffer and Jan Kennedy. We would also like to add one or two more congregation members to our team. Our meetings over the past year have been about once a month, but that will likely become less frequent in the future. Our church is required to have a policy for the prevention of sexual misconduct and also a policy for protection of children and youth. The team has recommended to Session some major changes to what is now called our Safe Ministries Policy (formerly Prevention of Sexual Misconduct Policy) and also to our Child & Youth Protection Policy. Those changes have recently been adopted by Session. In the event that there are allegations of misconduct in any form, the Safe Ministries Team is the first investigative response team. The Policies establish protocol for how to handle allegations of misconduct for all who use our facilities, not just the congregation and staff. You will be seeing more specific parts of our Policies in future Enews articles. If you have any questions or feel called to become part of our team, please see any team member listed above.

It is good to be reminded that, with all the discord, pain, and conflict in our communities and in the world, we serve a God who promises harmony and responds to violence with reconciliation and peace. The Peace & Global Witness Offering draws Presbyterians together and provides education and exposure to those who show us how to do this work well. We join these monetary gifts with our prayers for peace and our work for justice.
