Opening Hymn - Lutheran Service Book # 819 Sing Praise to God, the Highest Good Order of Service - Divine Service Setting Three - p. 184 P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. P O almighty God, merciful Father, C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.
2 Introit (Latin for entrance. It is usually a psalm that is spoken or sung responsively that begins the Service of the Word) P Be strong, and let your heart take courage, C all you who wait for the LORD! P But I trust in you, O LORD; C I say, You are my God. P My times are in your hand; C rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors! P Make your face shine on your servant; C save me in your steadfast love! P Be strong, and let your heart take courage, C all you who wait for the LORD! Gloria Patri - p.186 (sung) (Gloria Patri is Latin for Glory to the Father. The Church has added this praise of the Trinity to Psalms and other liturgical items for centuries.) C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Kyrie - p. 186 (sung) (Kyrie Eleison is Greek for Lord have mercy. We ask God to hear our prayers according to His mercy.) C Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Gloria in Excelsis - p.187 (sung) (A hymn of praise based on the angels song in Luke 2) P Glory be to God on High, C and on earth peace, goodwill toward men. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord. Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Collect of the Day (Prayer that collects the theme of the day) P The Lord be with you. C And with thy spirit. (sung) P Let us pray. 2 Bible Class Today - September 16 Adult Bible Study - Ever been to an awkward family reunion? The one where your younger brother shows up? 3 Grace Day is Saturday, October 6, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This year it is going to take place at Southside Park. The wonderful theme for the day remains the same as previous years: Everything is free just like God's grace. Although fellowship among St. Paul's members is always a good thing and will definitely take place that day, the main purpose of Grace Day is to reengage in-active members with the church and begin the faith walk of the unchurched. Grace Day provides a great opportunity to invite friends and acquaintances who are in-active or unchurched to a fun, casual, love-filled event, where seeds of faith can be planted. In addition to the many free services provided that day, we are also going to have a horseshoe tournament, teams of two. If you are interested in participating, perhaps consider asking someone in-active or unchurched to be your teammate that day. There will be a "free produce table" at Grace Day if you have extra fruits and vegetables at home that you would like to contribute that day. We are looking for a few more hair cutters and massage therapists. If you know of anyone who might be interested please contact one of the evangelism board members (Darlene Meyer at gdm.1975@yahoo.com, Alyssa Petty at alyssapettyjuiceplus@gmail. com, Stephen Bredehoeft at stephenebredehoeft@yahoo. com, Mark Kusel at markkusel@gmail.com). C Amen. (sung) Verse of the Month Psalm 116:1 C I love the Lord, because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy. Old Testament Lesson Isaiah 50:4 10 The Lord s servant - ultimately Jesus - faithfully gives himself over to humiliation and suffering, yet those who injure him will ultimately be judged. 4 The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning he awakens; he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught. 5 The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious; I turned not backward. 6 I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting. 7 But the Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame. 8 He who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me. 9 Behold, the Lord GOD helps me; who will declare me guilty? Behold, all of them will wear out like a garment; the moth will eat them up. 10 Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice of his servant? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Epistle Lesson James 3:1 12 Saint James warns against the dangers of our words. Though our mouths and tongues are but a small part of our body, they can do great harm. According to our new identity as God s children, we are to tame our tongues to speak only what is good, right, and true. 1 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. 2 For we all stumble in many ways, and if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. 3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. 4 Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has 3
4 been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Alleluia and Verse - p. 190 (sung) (A declaration of praise at the reading of the Gospel) C Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. Gospel Reading Mark 9:14-29 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the ninth chapter. C Glory be to Thee, O Lord. (sung) Jesus disciples are not able to cast out a demonic spirit. Before He rebukes the spirit, Jesus explains how all things are possible for one who believes. 14 When they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. 15 And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed and ran up to [Jesus] and greeted him. 16 And he asked them, What are you arguing about with them? 17 And someone from the crowd answered him, Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. 18 And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able. 19 And he answered them, O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me. 20 And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. 21 And Jesus asked his father, How long has this been happening to him? And he said, From childhood. 22 And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us. 23 And Jesus said to him, If you can! All things are possible for one who believes. 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, I believe; help my unbelief! 25 And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again. 26 And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, He is dead. 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. 28 And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could we not cast it out? 29 And he said to them, This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise be to Thee, O Christ. (sung) 4 Gifts of Grace School Auction While the auction may seem like a long way off (March 16th) the planning process is already beginning. If you would like to be part of the AMAZING team which creates the AWESOME auction, please come to an informational meeting on Sept. 17th at 6pm in the school office. Jessy Comfort Dog is available for funerals and visitations. She and a handler sit in the back of the funeral home/church. If people want to pet her, they can. Otherwise, they can pass by. We try to arrive in Lexington between 4:30-5:00pm and are back in town by 8:00pm at the latest. They do take donations of canned goods (green beans, corn, peas, soups, tomato products, etc.), dried pinto beans, white rice (not instant rice), dry dinners (mac and cheese, hamburger and tuna helper, ramen noodles), brown paper grocery bags, t-shirts, men s long sleeve light shirts, men s and women s shorts or jeans, sweat shirts, sweaters, etc. If you would like to help with distribution or donate items, please contact Karol Meyer for more information. Items can be dropped off at the church office. Thanks! 9
5 New Member Class Pastor Michael will be starting a new member class in October. Topics include a brief overview of Biblical history, the distinction between God's Law and Gospel, a study of the Six Chief Parts of Christian teaching (Ten Commandments, Apostles' Creed, Lord's Prayer, Sacraments of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion, and Confession and Forgiveness), and Lutheran worship. If you or someone you know is interested in membership at St. Paul's, please contact Pastor at mtpottschmidt@stpaulsconcordia.org or by phone at , and indicate available days/times of the week to meet. (Please note, attending this class does not commit you to membership at St. Paul's but is simply an opportunity to learn and explore the teachings of the Lutheran Church and what becoming a member means.) Young Adult Prayers (YAP) YAP This week, please keep Bethany Brown in your prayers as she begins her 4 th year at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska. She is studying Early Childhood Inclusive Education, which is birth to 3 rd grade with a special education background. Additionally, she is planning to get her Lutheran Teachers Diploma (LTD). Bethany is also busy planning her October 2018 wedding to Evan Johnson. Bethany is a 2015 graduate of SPLHS and the daughter of Greg & Martha Brown. Her address is available in the church office if you would like to send her a note of encouragement. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6 Family Footnotes One of the floats that I saw in the Saturday night religious floats parade last week grabbed my attention. It had a head of a dragon swinging wildly back and forth with red eyes gleaming and steam swirling from its nostrils. I was thinking, If I had little kids, that might be pretty scary! The message on the side talked about putting on the full armor of God so that you can withstand the attacks of the devil. You know what? That devil is something to take seriously! He is a formidable foe. He doesn t always present himself as some evil dragon though, in fact most of the time he presents himself in much more subtle ways. He can dig into the recesses of our minds and start his trickery there. That is why it is so important to put on the full armor of God. Ephesians 6:10-18 goes into detail of how to do this. It talks about the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet fitted with the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. That is a lot of armor! Why? So that we are ready to stand our ground when the devil comes knocking. I encourage you to read those words. And then what do those verses end with? Prayer. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord s people. Take comfort in the words of your Savior. Let prayers and praises tumble from your lips, and guard your minds with the promises of His truth. ~Gina Martens, Family Life Director 8 Creed - (inside back cover of the hymnal) Hymn of the Day - Lutheran Service Book # 528 Oh, for a Thousand Tongues to Sing Sermon Godly Talk Offertory - p.192 (sung) Offering and Rite of Fellowship (Please record your attendance on the friendship register in each pew and pass the register down the pew so all may record their attendance.) Prayer of the Church After each petition: P Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. (The 10:30am service will conclude with the Lord s Prayer, Benediction and the closing hymn, Lutheran Service Book # 578 Thy Strong Word.) Service of the Sacrament (The 8:00am service continues on p. 194 in Lutheran Service Book.) We believe that in the Lord s Supper our Lord gives to us His true body and blood with the bread and the wine for the forgiveness of our sins. We recognize the charge that St. Paul offers in 1 Corinthians 11:27-28 that those who come to receive the Lord s Supper ought to examine themselves so that they do not eat and drink in an unworthy manner. Therefore, out of concern for those who have not been instructed in the faith or who hold to a different confession, we ask that only members of Lutheran Church Missouri Synod congregations receive the Sacrament. If you would like to learn more about what our congregation teaches, to inquire about becoming a member or have questions about our practice, please speak to one of the pastors. For those who have problems consuming alcohol, you are invited to receive diluted wine from the purple glasses in the center of the tray of individual cups. For those who have dietary restrictions, gluten free wafers are available upon request. 5
