Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Living in God s amazing grace FROM the PASTOR Pastor Bill Sappenfield In 1528, about ten years after The Reformation had begun, Martin Luther visited parishes in Saxony and he was dismayed by what he found. Although the people often recited the Ten Commandments, the Creed, and the Lord s Prayer as part of their worship, they had very little understanding of the meaning of those foundations of Christian faith. While he was working on other projects at the same time, Luther completed the Small Catechism in May, 1529, and made it available as an illustrated booklet. While the Large Catechism was intended for pastors and teachers, the Small Catechism was written for all Christians to understand their lives as God s children. Next year, 2016, will be the 500 th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation and our Presiding Bishop, Elizabeth Eaton, has called on the members of the ELCA to read the Small Catechism as part of the commemoration. Community of Joy will order illustrated copies with some comments by Professor Timothy Wengert so that we can participate with our fellow Lutherans across the country. The Catechisms will be available in the narthex when they come. There will be a box next to them to receive money; I ask that you reimburse the church $5.00 for each copy (more if you would like to help). Do you have a discipline of daily devotions? The Small Catechism would be a great addition to that practice. The Small Catechism, along with the Augsburg Confession, is considered one of the two basic writings of the Lutheran Confessions. It is specifically mentioned in our church constitution. Let s take the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of our lives with God. Pastor Sappenfield

Please remember to find a replacement if you are unable to serve on an assigned date. COMMUNION CARE There s room for more assistants to help in preparing the communion elements and vessels. We are always seeking volunteers women and men. Consider making a husband and wife team for Communion Care. Please consider this as part of your ministry to the congregation on either Saturday or Sunday. Contact Patty Ninke (Coordinator) if you are willing to serve in this way. ALTAR FLOWERS The cost of altar flowers is $44.00 for two (2) vases or, if you are sharing the date with another member, each vase is $ Remember: Check the Flower Folder (in Narthex by the front doors) for the number of vases you are donating before placing your contribution in one of the special envelopes which are in the sign-up folder. If you prefer to have both vases in honor or memory of a loved one, sign your name in both columns. Direct any special flower orders to Barbara Woodman or her at bswoodman@sbcglobal.net Please take your flowers home after the Sunday Service. You may also pick them up on Monday. By the time October rolls around, COJ members will have taken part in the Village Cancer Walk, participated in the annual Outdoor Service/Picnic on the church grounds, and started preparation for the annual church garage and bake sale, which takes place October 21/22. Thanks in advance to those of you who have volunteered to help with that, and also to those who have agreed to take positions on the council, audit and nominating committees, and serve as voting members for the annual synod gathering in 2017! The meeting to vote on these positions will be in November. Our annual stewardship drive begins the weekend of October 15/16, and the Assistant to the Bishop, Liz Albertson, will lead our services. The 499 th Anniversary of Reformation is the weekend of October 29/30; please plan to wear red! There is a fundraiser picnic at COJ on Friday, October 28, hosted by the property committee, proceeds from which will fund the revamping of the perpetually wet landscaping beds next to the building at COJ. All of the congregation and friends are invited. Good food and fellowship for all! Take the opportunity to participate in the Animate Bible Study classes sponsored by Christian Education, taking place on Tuesdays, beginning October 18 at 9:00a.m. Don t forget about joining Choir and Joy Boys, as well as attending Women of Joy and Thursday Bible Studies, Mahjong, Joyful Dining and Singles Group. Animate: Faith is built on solid theology and allows adults the opportunity to strengthen faith through spirited discussion, wondering, and journaling. The curriculum features perspectives on God, religion, Jesus, salvation, the cross, the Bible, and church from Christian thought leaders. Each session encourages participants to discuss, sketch, doodle, create, and share. The beautifully illustrated Faith Journal provides space for reflection and prayer. Each video blends live action with animation to introduce a question, provide a thought-provoking perspective, and beckon viewers to participate in the dialogue. Join us for a new prespective to Bible Study. In October we will begin a three-part series covering 3 topics of the Animate series. When: Tuesdays at. October 18, 25 and November 1 st. Each session will last approximately one hour (Mahjong players can join us and then play after 10:00). Notice the first session changed, previously the first session was Oct. 11 th. Cost: Free, but we do need you to register by October 9 th. Journals need to be ordered. Please sign up on the sheet in the narthex or Lynda.grasse@gmail.com. All are welcome, plus guests. If you unable to make all three sessions, please come to as many as you can. We will continue this series in January and the Journals will be used then. Unfortunately, sometimes we don t know what the symbols mean. Why do red paraments usually have doves, flames, or ships on them but lambs are usually on purple paraments? Does IHS really mean In His Service? Join the discussion on Thursday, October 6. There will be handouts with familiar Christian symbols and a brief explanation of their origins and history. SINGLES GROUP The Singles Group met at Mulligans on September 14, SIXTEEN people showed up! We all had a great time, great conversation and food & beverages of choice. The only problem was we couldn t all sit together. Four of the ladies sat at a table near us. It was nice to have more men there too! Our next outing will be at Home Plate on Highway 7 N. on October 12th at 5:30 pm. Call Sally Johnson at if you will be attending. Hope to see ya l. Thank you, Linda Griffin - Golf Coordinator Recycle Event There is a recycling event at First Southern Baptist Church, 604-South Reynolds Road, Bryant, AR, on Saturday morning, October 15, from 8-11 a.m. They will accept old florescent lightbulbs, electronics, paint, old chemicals and herbicides, cleaners, oil, bikes, etc. There will be a group there to help unload cars. 4 Page 4 VOLUME 13, ISSUE 10 Scripture Passage and Prayer to Consider for October 1 Timothy 4: These are the things you must insist on and teach. Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Until I arrive, give attention to the public reading of scripture, to exhorting, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you through prophecy with the laying on of hands by the council of elders. Put these things into practice, devote yourselves to them, so that all may see your progress. Pay close attention to yourself and your teaching; continue in those things, for in doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers. Heavenly Father, We ask you to send your Spirit into our lives so that we realize our gifts and use them to bring your message of salvation to the world. Guide our conduct so that we will be your examples in our speech and actions, in love, in faith, and in purity. Open our ears and minds to hear your Word as it is read and taught, that we may act on it in our daily lives. We ask your continued blessing on our Call Committee as they wait in patience for the next name from the Bishop. Motivate our church council to renewed commitment to the ministry you have called us to in this time and place. Watch over Pastor Bill as he travels both to serve our congregation and on his vacation this month. Keep him safe and grant him an enjoyable vacation. Thank you for the blessings you have given us here at Community of Joy and make us ever aware of your presence with us. We pray in Jesus name, Amen. GARAGE SALE REMINDER!!!!! We need your items and your help to make this another successful sale. GOD'S WORK OUR HANDS! WOMEN of JOY The October meeting will be on the 2 nd Tuesday, October 11 th to accommodate our speaker Mike Blythe from the Garland County Historical Society. He will present a slide show titled, Hot Springs Then and Now. This meeting will be the perfect time to find out what you ve always wanted to know about Hot Springs! Joyce Hochreiter CARING CALLS ARE FOR EVERY MEMBER It is has been two years since CARING CALLS were introduced through Joyful Loving Care. Those that have been involved with the program have done a great job of making sure our members are watched over. The second weekend in October Joyful Loving Care will host refreshments and share information on our support work. We want to extend a special invitation to our members to consider becoming a partner in the Caring Calls program. The daily call connection is a great way to keep in touch with a church friend. We want to remind everyone that you do not have to reside alone to become a partner in this program. Everyone enjoys a friendly phone call why not join in? For details contact: Moonyean Smarzinski Joyful Loving Care It has been brought to my attention that members of the church are interested in starting a prayer chain. These duties will fall under Joyful Loving Care. Make check payable to: New FOCUS Class is beginning the end of October FOCUS is a program for Villagers who are being challenged by Low Vision. The Program s goal is to help these folks remain independent and safe in their environment. We say that we step in where your eye doctor leaves off to help you learn new ways to handle your everyday activities when your vision may be diminishing. Or next FOCUS Class is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 31 st. This class meets twice a week on Monday and Friday for three weeks and is an in-depth and hands-on learning experience for those challenged by vision loss. We also share access to the many resources that are available to our students. Registration is required as there is a limit of 10 students per class. If you, or someone you know, is experiencing vision loss and would like more information about the class, please call Jan Folstad at or Nancy Otto at We also sponsor a monthly Support Group that is open to all Villagers. This group meets on the third Monday of every month at Kirk in the Pines Presbyterian Church, beginning at 10:00 am until about 11:30 am. Transportation is provided by the Breakfast Lions. The goal of this Support Group is to provide information and support to those who are experiencing Low Vision or anyone who would like more information about Low Vision. The FOCUS Program is supported by Community of Joy Lutheran, Kirk in the Pines Presbyterian and the Breakfast Lions Club. We will invite Christ Lutheran. We will have a sign up sheet but have not decided to sell tickets or just have a free will offering. We will offer brats, burgers, cheese, coleslaw, beans, chips, and all the fixings. Since it will be held outside, you may bring your choice of beverages. More information will be coming.
