3 ALL SAINTS SUNDAY G A T H E R I N G PRELUDE Solemn Melody - Sir Henry Walford Davies WORDS of WELCOME Geoffrey Shoffstall Pastor Rhodes CHORAL INTROIT *CALL to WORSHIP One: O taste and see that the Lord is good; All: Happy are those who take refuge in God. One: With hearts and hands and voices, let us praise the Lord. All: Let us worship God together! *HYMN 39 Great is Thy Faithfulness Nancy Anderson FAITHFULNESS *PRAYER of CONFESSION Unison Reverend McAnlis Gracious God, you call us your own children and cover us with your love. We would seek to be merciful as you are, and to show compassion as you do, but we fail to live the life to which we have been called. Where we ought to forgive, we condemn; the evil we should shun, we embrace. Forgive our sinful ways, tame our wayward wills, and make us more like Christ, until we are raised in perfection on the last day. *SILENT PRAYERS of CONFESSION *RESPONSE 601 Amen (DANISH) Here each worshiper may offer silent prayers of confession. Congregation *PROMISE of FORGIVENESS One: Sisters and brothers, no one who takes refuge in God will be condemned. Friends, believe the good news of the gospel: All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. *RESPONSE to GOD S PARDON (back cover of hymnal) Glory to the Father GLORIA PATRI *THE PEACE One: The Peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you. One: Let us greet one another with the Peace of Christ. As a sign of their reconciliation in Christ, the people share the peace of Christ, greeting one another with these or similar words: The peace of Christ be with you, Peace be with you, or simply, Peace. 3

4 PRAYER of REMEMBRANCE & THANKSGIVING Pastor Heffernan During this prayer, the names of those who have died during the past year will be read by the pastors. Following the reading of the names, a time of silence will be observed, during which you are free to lift up the name(s) of someone in your life whom you remember this day, either aloud or in the quiet of your heart. One: Living God, in whom there is no shadow or change; our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, we thank you for the gift of life eternal, and for the saints of all times and places who have walked the road of faith before us and beside us. All: We thank you for all the saints remembered and forgotten, for those dear souls most precious to us, who having served you well now rest from their labors. One: We thank you for their witness to your love and their commitment to your justice. All: We thank you for their trust in your mercy and the joy they shared in serving you. By their example, remind us of our calling to continue their faithful work, as we too, walk in the light of your love. One: God of grace and peace, today we especially remember the saints from among this community who have departed our company over the past year. We rejoice that no one can look upon death and not look beyond it, just as no one can think of night without thinking of the glorious dawn to follow. All: We rejoice in the security of those whom you have called unto yourself. They go out from us but not into darkness, for they go into the light of your everlasting love. One: We thank you particularly this day for Katie Austin Joseph Battaglia Ruth D. Broomfield Alma W. Brown Arlene Thornley Chiquette Carol B. Coles John J. DegliUmberto Gary W. Doan Margaret Kernan Dougherty John Van Dyke Ellis, Jr. Paul Flesch Felicia Humer Albert L. Katz, Jr. Marion Bell Koose Marjorie W. LeGoff Darlene Patterson Clarence L. Prickett Ruth Safka David Raymond Slover Nora B. Thomas Margaret L. Williams Marie F. Yeager One: All: Merciful God, we thank you for their faithful witness, for their courage amidst strife and their hope in the face of death. We remember so many other saints who have walked this road with us, those whom we have named and those whom we have lifted in the quiet of our hearts. Continue to inspire us by their faithful witness, O God, that we too might join in bringing your justice, mercy, and peace to our world. 4

5 One: All: Eternal God, as we walk this pilgrim way, make our faith firm, our hope clear, and our love pure, that we might join the saints of all the ages in praise eternal. We thank you that by dying Christ destroyed the power of death, and by rising from the grave opened the way to eternal life. Help us to know that because he lives, we shall live also, and that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. *HYMN 326 For All the Saints (The congregation will sing verses 1 & 5. The choir will sing verses 2, 3 and 4.) SINE NOMINE TIME for YOUNG DISCIPLES Children in grades K-5 may leave for music time with Mr. Carpenter. One: It is truly right and our greatest joy to give you thanks and praise therefore we praise you, joining our voices with the choirs of angels, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name: 5

6 All: One: All: One: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. You are holy, O God of majesty, and blessed is Jesus Christ, your Son our Lord With thanksgiving we offer our very selves to you to be a living and holy sacrifice, dedicated to your service. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Gracious God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these your gifts of bread and cup As this bread is Christ s body for us, send us out to be the body of Christ in the world. And now with the confidence of the children of God, let us pray. 7 WHO MAY RECEIVE COMMUNION IN THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH? The opportunity to eat and drink with Christ is not a right bestowed upon the worthy, but a privilege given to the undeserving who come in faith, repentance, and love. All who come to the table are offered the bread and cup, regardless of their age or understanding. If some of those who come have not yet been baptized, an invitation to baptismal preparation and Baptism should be graciously extended. Worshipers prepare themselves to celebrate the Lord s Supper by putting their trust in Christ, confessing their sin, and seeking reconciliation with God and one another. Even those who doubt may come to the table in order to be assured of God s love and grace in Jesus Christ. -Book of Order W UPCOMING ADULT EDUCATION CLASSES Plan to come to all or some of the courses offered. Courses are held from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Sundays before Worship Service in locations noted below. Case for Christ with Erin Kernan Aronson, Wendy Yazujian, Dan Jones, Paul Clough, Tom Evans & Drew Hunger November 5, 12 & 19 To be held in the Chapel A reprise of the several-week-long class presented in 2004 that used a courtroom setting in which two lawyers (one the Devil's Advocate) argue whether Christ is the Son of God. Bible and Current Events December 3 To be held in the Conference Room Come join the discussion or just listen to what the Bible says about what is happening in our world. This informal class will have a leader who will poll the attendees about the significant world issues of recent weeks and then use a smart phone and other references to read what the Bible says about the issues. BLUE JEANS SUNDAY IS COMING The Board of Trustees will be holding the annual MPC Blue Jeans Sunday work day on Sunday, November 12, Everyone is welcome to wear blue jeans and work shirts to worship and then stay to help in the annual clean-up effort! A pizza lunch will be provided for all workers after worship. Last year we were able to remove 3 tons of old wood, setpieces and other material from the attic in the Christian Education wing of the church, and to complete a number of other projects as well. This year we hope to replicate the effort and continue the ongoing maintenance and beautification of our buildings and grounds begun over the summer. Please join us by adding your name(s) to the sign-up sheets in the Communication Center on Sunday, October 29 and November 5, or call the church office to let us know that you will join the fun. We would like to know in advance who is coming, so we can plan projects and have equipment and supplies ready for you. Thank you for your support as we seek to make MPC a warmer and more welcoming place to be!
