At the conclusion of the service, the acolyte bears the light out into the world, where we are called to follow Christ and serve others in his name. Today s acolytes are Brandon Schnurr (8:30) and Sydney Flook (10:30). 3 EASTER SUNDAY G A T H E R I N G WORDS of WELCOME PRELUDE Chorale Joseph Jongen INTROIT Festival Introit Pastor Rhodes Geoffrey Shoffstall Chancel Choir, Organ and Brass *CALL to WORSHIP Trustee Mark Schnurr (8:30) Trustee Kathy Foster (10:30) One: Beloved church, behold the victory of our God: Jesus, our Lord, has conquered the grave. All: Christ is risen! Alleluia! One: Sin and death shall reign no more. All: Christ is risen! Alleluia! One: Let this place resound with joy! All: Christ is risen! Alleluia! Thanks be to God. *HYMN 232 Jesus Christ Is Risen Today EASTER HYMN *PRAYER of CONFESSION Unison Pastor Heffernan Lord Jesus, through the power of the Holy Spirit we have been raised from the waters of baptism to share in your glorious resurrection. Yet we have not lived as Easter people. We are unsure of your promise, confused about your will, and afraid in the face of danger. Like Mary, we weep at the tomb, but do not recognize your presence. Call us by name, risen Lord, that we may know you with confidence. Whenever we are tempted to fear death, give us courage to confess your Easter victory. Whenever we are distracted by petty conflicts, keep our minds on your reconciling love. Forgive us our sin and let our lives be a testimony to your salvation through the love of God and by the power of the Holy Spirit. *SILENT PRAYERS of CONFESSION *RESPONSE 601 Amen (DANISH) Here each worshiper may offer silent prayers of confession. Congregation 3

4 *PROMISE of FORGIVENESS One: Listen, beloved church: God who raised Jesus from the dead has not given us over to death. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. All: Thanks be to God! Alleluia! Amen. *RESPONSE to GOD S PARDON (back cover of hymnal) Glory to the Father GLORIA PATRI *THE PEACE One: The Peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you. One: Let us greet one another with the Peace of Christ. As a sign of their reconciliation in Christ, the people share the peace of Christ, greeting one another with these or similar words: The peace of Christ be with you, Peace be with you, or simply, Peace. PRAYER for ILLUMINATION L I T U R G Y o f t h e W O R D PSALTER READING Psalm 118:1-2, (Old Testament, page 534) One: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. ANTHEM Christ Is the World s Redeemer - arr. John Ferguson Christ is the world s Redeemer, the lover of the pure, The fount of heav'nly wisdom, our trust and hope secure, The armor of His soldiers, the Lord of earth and sky; Our health while we are living, our life when we shall die. Christ has our host surrounded with clouds of martyrs bright, Who wave their palms in triumph and fire us for the fight. This Christ the cross ascended to save a world undone, And, suff'ring for the sinful, our full redemption won. Down in the realms of darkness he lay a captive bound, But at the hour appointed he rose a victor crowned, And now, to heav'n ascended, he sits upon the throne In glorious dominion, His Father's and His own. Glory to God the Father, the unbegotten One; All honor be to Jesus, His sole begotten Son, And to the Holy Spirit-- the perfect Trinity. Let all the worlds give answer: Amen! So let it be. --St. Columba/ trans. Duncan McGregor, alt. 4

5 Time for YOUNG DISCIPLES Children are welcome to remain with their parents. (8:30) Children in grades K-5 may leave for music time with Mr. Carpenter. (10:30) GOSPEL READING John 20:1-18 (New Testament, page 108) One: This is the Gospel of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. SERMON Come and See Pastor Rhodes *HYMN 233 The Day of Resurrection! LANCASHIRE *AFFIRMATION of FAITH - from A Brief Statement of Faith (Unison) We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal. With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen. PRAYERS of THANKSGIVING and SUPPLICATION THE LORD S PRAYER (debts and debtors) OFFERING Invitation to Give Presentation of Gifts Offertory Music Good Christian Friends, Rejoice and Sing! - arr. All people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; Him serve with mirth, his praise forth tell. Come ye before him and rejoice. 2. Choir 3. Choir OLD HUNDREDTH 5
