2 Deacons Corner JULY OFFERING SCHEDULE July 3: Dordt College Located in Sioux Center Iowa, and associated with the Christian Reformed Church, Dordt College was founded in 1955 and welcomes all students who are interested in a biblical, Christ-centered education. With more than 1,400 students for 30 States and seven Provinces, Dordt s curriculum is designed to give each student a complete comprehensive education from a solid Reformed, Christian perspective. There are more than 30 majors and 11 preprofessional programs of study. July 10: Elim Christian Services Elim is a Christ-centered community that recognizes the God-given value and purpose of each person, and is committed to learning and to sharing its expertise wherever God calls. Through Elim Christian School, adult services, and outreach programming, individuals with disabilities are equipped to achieve their highest God-given potential, living their lives glorifying Him! Each day over 900 individuals with disabilities turn to Elim for life-changing programs on one of Elim s two campuses, within 20 Discovery Centers in Christian schools, and through partnerships in five other countries. July 17: Christian Schools International Founded in 1920, Christian Schools International (CSI) was the first educational services organization to be established in North America and has been the leader in Christian education for almost a century. Their worldview is firmly rooted in scripture and in a reformed tradition of Christian theology. July 24: Children s Hunger Fund Children s Hunger Fund (CHF) has practiced Gospel-centered mercy ministry for more than 20 years. Since 1991, 99% of CHF s total contributions over 1 billion dollars in food and other aid have been distributed through programs serving more than 20 million children across America and around the world. They declare the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ as their first priority. It is the only source of true hope, the ultimate remedy for mankind s suffering, and the power of God to those who are being saved. CHF unites their God-given gifts and resources for gospel proclamation. July 31: PASS Pregnancy Aid South Suburbs (PASS) has served women and men in unplanned pregnancy situations since For over, PASS has served thousands of women and men facing the traumas of unplanned pregnancies. Beyond services and care, PASS has provided tangible items such as diapers, car seats, formula, baby food, infant and maternity clothing, and other items to thousands of families in need. PASS annually teaches abstinence before marriage and faithfulness in marriage to over 15,000 students and provides a highly effective post-abortion healing program. I recently heard Ron Blue on the radio sharing a story about a trip to Africa. On the trip, he met with a local pastor and asked him what the greatest barrier to the spread of the gospel was in that part of Africa. Expecting the pastor to mention lack of resources, transportation, communication, tribalism, etc; Ron was surprised to hear the pastor say materialism. The pastor explained, If a man has a mud hut, he wants a stone hut; if he has a thatched roof he wants a metal roof; if he has one cow, he wants two cows. The rest of the radio program went on to talk about our relationship with money. This thinking is prevalent in our culture and even our church. How easy it is for us to say, If I just had a bigger house I would be happy, or If I just had more money I would give more, or If I had the gift of hospitality I would invite people in? God has blessed us with specific gifts including money but also our time and talents. He expects us to reflect the generosity He has shown to us. Let s find contentment and generosity in God s blessing and trust Him to multiply. Use the link below to take the New Money Mindset Assessment to see what your current relationship with money is. content/your-new-money-mindset/assessment/ 2

3 Graduation Day at OPC Preschool -Ruth Baas, Director he preschool year at Orland Park Christian T Preschool came to a close on May 18. Many family members and friends gathered in the church sanctuary at OPCRC to celebrate all 45 of our preschoolers as they performed a spring program titled Celebrate God s Creation! After the main program, a graduation ceremony was held for 30 children from the four-year-old class. The children did a wonderful job of performing songs they learned throughout the year, highlighting the various parts of our world that God created in the six days listed in the first chapter of the Bible, Genesis 1. The narrator of the program explained what God made on each day, and ended each day with the words God saw the things that He made and He said The children then answered as a group, shouting, IT IS GOOD! Near the end of the program, the narrator said, God saw everything that He had made, and He said Then the children responded with the words, IT IS VERY GOOD! The students from our M/W/F class were proud to participate in the graduation ceremony by taking a turn walking down the center aisle of the church to the music of Pomp and Circumstance. When they arrived at the front, they each received a diploma congratulating them for their performance in preschool. We were proud to present the following graduates to their family and friends: Aubrey Ahern, Zachary Artista, Hunter Assink, Lexie Assink, Elizabeth Bielski, Joshua Colton, Isabella Cuevas, Ava Dykstra, Jack Erickson, Nolan Evenhouse, Breanna Flores, Emma Garcia, Tessa Garcia, Molly Rose Hyland, Benjamin Kane, Madison Konior, Lillian Kroese, Luke Lautner, Caleb Leary, Kaitlyn Livingston, Ethan Loughry, Grace Marcus, Jake Misura, Celia Schipma, Jack Schipma, Caroline Solle, Bristol Vander Veer, Bridget Welter, Ava Zantingh, and Jennifer Zumot. Please join us in praying that the seeds of God s love and the seeds of the love of learning that were planted in their hearts will grow and mature through the years. We also pray that their families will continue to remember the love of Jesus that was introduced to them as their children attended Orland Park Christian Preschool. Thank you to Denise Vander Plaats, Ryan Brouwer, and Josh Siegers for their help with our audio/visual needs at the program. Each family received a DVD of the program to take home that same day. We also appreciate our custodian, Rick Schultz, for his extra help with everything. We were blessed to work with a wonderful staff at preschool this year. Our dedicated teachers were Ruth Baas, Janna Kuyvenhoven, Brenda Harms, Lisa Cavanaugh, and Barb Vree. Mary Vos was our wonderful teacher aide. God provided just what we needed through the love that these gifted ladies shared with the children. We give all the glory to God for the opportunity to serve in His Kingdom work at Orland Park Christian Preschool. hunter Lexie tessa lillian grace celia jack caroline 3

4 Kids Konnections Wrap-Up We had a great year in Kids Konnections once again! There were 13 classes for our K-12th graders with a staff of 19 teachers! We were also overjoyed to bring back the Friendship Class, which was coordinated by Lisa Cavanaugh. Katie Vree assisted with PowerPoint during singing time, and we welcomed Lisa Boersma as our new superintendent in January! Some of the special things we did either as classes or as a group were singing at Providence for the residents in April; learning about communion and baptism; hearing from some that served in Honduras; putting on the Christmas Program, Follow the Star; singing at the Palm Sunday Choir Cantata, participating in the CRWM Poster Contest, singing on Celebration Sunday, and so much more! MEMORY WORK: During Kids Konnections this year, we learned about a different missionary each month and memorized their favorite Bible verse! It was so neat to learn about all the different places that our missionaries serve, to hear about the culture they are a part of, as well as the unique way God is using each of them in those countries. Here is a rundown of what we learned: Kids Konnections Celebration Sunday Celebration Sunday was held on Sunday, May 1 this year. Kindergarten through 4th grade students celebrated the end of another season and sang a couple songs. Perfect attendance awards were given to Matt Belstra and Catelyn Novak. Participation awards were given to the Friendship Class: Ira McKeever, Fred Van Zelt, Howard Hoekstra, David Hardenberg, Karen Smith, Darrell Bingham, Clare Considine, Wayne Decker, Rusty Hook, Eddy Lefils, Megan McLaughlin, Tom Mulder, Tony Perkins, Timothy De Ruiter, and Cher Tom. Bibles were given to the following students in first and fourth grade: FIRST GRADE: September ~ Cliff and Christine Weiner from Youth With a Mission, Australia: They were able to come visit us and talk about their work in Australia! Their favorite verse is Deuteronomy 31:6. October ~ Chris and Naomi Langkamp from Lampstand Ministries in Chicago: Their favorite verse is Phillippians 4:13. November ~ Roger and Carey Basick from Reach Beyond in Ireland: The verse we learned is Psalm 126:3. Elizabeth Hospes Levi Ipema Anna Keane Lily Loerop Nolan Loerop Jacob Rynberk James Rynberk Lauris Thomson Macie Vande Kamp Samuel Verhagen Ainsley Weidenaar Harrison Yonker January ~ Rev. Larry and Ruth Spalink are missionaries for CRC World Missions in Tokyo, Japan: Larry s favorite verse is Isaiah 43:1 and 3. FOURTH GRADE: February ~ Dan Swets works with the Chicagoland Prison Outreach in Chicago: His favorite verse is Isaiah 41:10. March ~ Dave and Blanca Gifford: We learned about the work they are doing in Mexico City with CRC World Missions. Their favorite verse is Romans 15:16. Austin Cavanaugh Holly Clevering Hannah Cook Torree Garcia Austin Huizenga Catelyn Novak Connor Schaafsma Weston Weidenaar We are so thankful for another great year of growing in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! A special Thank You to all the teachers that so faithfully taught our students each week. 4
