2 Blessed Are the Focused Each of you has received a gift to use to serve others. 1 Peter 4:10 There is only so much sand in the hourglass. Who gets it? You know what I m talking about, don t you?... The PTA needs a new treasure. With your background and experience and talent and wisdom and love for kids and degree in accounting. YOU are the perfect one for the job... It s tug-of-war, and you are the rope... Blessed are the meek, Jesus said. The word meek does not mean weak. It means focused. It is a word used to describe a domesticated stallion. Power under control... Blessed are those who recognize their God given responsibilities. Blessed are those who acknowledge that there is only one God and have quit applying for his position. Blessed are those who know what on earth they are on earth to do and set themselves about the business of doing it. - by Max Lucado in Grace for the Moment Deacons Corner OCTOBER OFFERING SCHEDULE October 5: CRC Race Relations The Ministry of Race Relations is mandated by synod to design, organize, and implement programs that will assist the denomination, churches, and members in eliminating the causes and effects of racism within the body of believers and throughout the world. Because there is a need for leaders and their congregations to have more effective ministry in the diverse communities they serve, there is also a need to have assistance in becoming culturally intelligent. The Office of Race Relations offers the resources and tools to develop this capacity. October 12: MorningStar Mission MorningStar Mission relieves the spiritual and physical hunger of the poor by providing food for the hungry, clothing for the needy, shelter for the homeless and the Gospel of Jesus Christ for all. Since 1909, MorningStar Mission has served men, women, children and entire families in Joliet and Will County, offering hope for the hurting through one-time meals and long-term recovery programs. Their East Side Cafe program serves three meals a day and two meals on Sunday, serving more than 186,973 meals to men, women and families. By sharing your blessings, you can help feed the hungry and homeless in the Joliet and Will County. October 19: CRCNA Disability Concerns www2.crcna.org/pages/disability.cfm Disability Concerns helps churches become healthier communities that intentionally seek to end the isolation and disconnectedness of persons with disabilities and their families, nurture the spiritual lives of people with disabilities so that they become professing and active members of their churches, and encourage the gifts of people with disabilities so that they can serve God fully in their churches. October 26: CRC Home Missions Christian Reformed Home Missions follows God s lead in the movement of the gospel in North America. Working through regional teams, Home Missions supports a diverse group of church planters, pastors, campus ministers, and others who are called to renew communities together. 2

3 Preschool News A New Year at Preschool Begins -Ruth Baas, Director Forty-three excited three- to five-year-old children are off to an excellent start in a new year of growing in faith and learning at Orland Park Christian Preschool! The themes we have used to plan our stories, lessons, and activities during this first month of school have been leading each child to understand and appreciate that God Made Me, God Made My Family, and God Made My Friends! We are thankful for each unique and special child that God has brought to our classrooms. We are also thankful for their families and we pray that the children and their families will be introduced to the love of Jesus as it is modeled and taught in our daily activities. The children are having so much fun sharing and learning with the new friends they have met at school! Everyone is busy learning names and getting to know how to treat each other with respect and kindness. Hearing Bible stories from God s Word is a very special part of our learning at Orland Park Christian Preschool. We have started with stories from the beginning of the Bible. The children love to see the Bible stories through flannel board pictures as well as hear the teachers tell the narrative in their own words. Another way they have experienced the story of God s creation is by painting a wall mural of the many things that God made. (See accompanying photo.) Thank you for supporting the ministry at Orland Park Christian Preschool with your prayers and your encouragement. We appreciate the generous support from all who came out to the Family Classics Car Show and donated to the preschool through dinner donations and mums purchases. We are also grateful to those of you who supported us with gifts even if you were unable to attend. The Family of God at Orland Church is a blessing to the preschool ministry. Please continue to pray that God will bless the children and their families as they grow in Him. 3

4 Crossroad Bible Institute Christmas Send-a-Card Program will you provide a blessing to a prisoner during the holidays this year? -Ruth Baas, CBI Coordinator for Orland Park Church ach year in the fall season we have the opportunity to donate Christmas cards that are sent to prisoners who are enrolled in the Cross- E road Bible Institute study program. For some prisoners, this is the only Christmas greeting or celebration that they will have. Even if you are not an instructor at this time, you can provide a blessing to many prisoners by participating in this Christmas Send-a-Card Program. Crossroad needs to receive these Christmas cards from our church during the week of November 9. So if you are willing to purchase or gather some Christmas greeting cards and address them according to the guidelines that follow, please make sure to have them at church on or before Sunday, November 9. All cards will be boxed and sent to the Grand Rapids headquarters of Crossroad Bible Institute. They will take care of mailing the cards to prisoners around the nation. The following guidelines***must be followed in order to successfully participate in this program: 1. Select an appropriate English or Spanish Christmas card. 2. The card must be able to fit into a 6 x 9 (or smaller) envelope. 3. Cards and envelopes must not have foil, stickers, glitter, glue, pop-up parts, or paint. No homemade-layered cards can be accepted. 4. You may add a special greeting, word of encouragement, or Bible verse. 6. No unsigned cards will be accepted. 7. Place the card in its blank envelope, but DO NOT seal. (The Crossroad Bible ministry will personalize the envelope with a student s name.) 8. Do not put postage stamps on the envelopes. 9. Place the card(s) with their blank envelope(s) in Ruth Baas mailbox slot at church or if you have more than will fit, place them in the Christmas gift bag that is set up near the mailbox slots. 5. Sign only your first name or a brother/sister in Christ, a fellow-believer, etc. ***Cards that do not comply with these guidelines cannot be used because most correctional facilities will not accept them. Let s be a blessing to those in prison who need encouragement, especially at Christmastime! I was in prison and you came to visit me. Matthew 25:36 Remember those in prison, as if you were their fellow prisoners Hebrews 13:3 3 4
