So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. Greetings, he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshipped him. Then Jesus said to them, Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me. Matt 28 v 8-10 The resurrection is the greatest historical event ever. It was the event that changed everything. Sin and death were defeated, and along with them fear and hopelessness. I wonder how the women felt at that moment when they realised that the tomb was not just empty, but that Jesus was risen and no longer held by death. We had a great time during Experience Easter when we asked the children to suggest how the women must have felt in one word. Their imagination was fantastic and the most popular word was flabbergasted, but included words such as sad, happy, ecstatic and overjoyed. What is most remarkable about the story is not how the women felt but how they responded. They were spurred into action and ran to tell his disciples. They were so overjoyed, relieved, excited that they could not contain themselves and knew that they had to tell the others. And as we study the resurrection accounts and read the Book of Acts we see a group of people who were so moved by this earth-shattering event that they had to tell everybody. They knew that this was a moment that was not just for them, a small privileged group called together by Jesus, but for everyone; Jew and Gentile, male and female, rich and poor. The implications of Jesus resurrection would lead them to tell the whole world, with many travelling far and wide (not always by choice) and 4

many being martyred. Once they understood what His resurrection meant they knew they could not go back to the old ways, the old lifestyle and the old behaviour. His resurrection was just the beginning of a new life and a whole new of being. So, what does the resurrection mean to you? How do you, or how will you, respond? With joy and thanksgiving, knowing that everything has changed and you cannot go back to how things were? Are there areas of your life, attitude, behaviour that needs to change. It is acknowledging that the old ways have to die in order for the new life to grow and flourish. Easter is good news. Let s not just talk about it, but let s all live it. With every blessing for Easter, Dave & Sharon Bishop St James Church is open every Tuesday 9.00am 11.00am for free coffee/tea private prayer and quiet time or just a friendly chat 5

Services at Holy Trinity for May All are welcome at any of our services. If you would like to know more about Holy Trinity, please make yourself known to Graham or ring Sunday 7th May 10.30am Family Worship with Liz Corbett Sunday 21st May 10.30am Holy Communion with Dave Bishop Deadline for cashing in your old 1 coins and paper 5 notes Dig into the pockets of your coats, rummage down the backs of your chairs and couch, empty your piggy bank, look in your car do whatever it takes, but FIND all those old 1 coins that may lurk around your house before it is too late. Keep an eye open for the old paper 5 notes too, as they cease to become legal tender in May! For this autumn, the little round 1 we have known since 1983 will become worthless. The Treasury has just brought out a new 12-sided 1 coin. The change to the new silver and gold dodecagon is the largest to affect the UK s currency since 1998, when the old 50p coin was abandoned for a smaller, shiner version. The face side of the new 1 coin features the Queen, while the tail side features four emblems: the English rose, the leek for Wales, the Scottish thistle and the shamrock for Northern Ireland all emerging from a single stem within a crown. 6

Why the C of E is keeping its customs of reading the marriage banns The C of E has recently voted to keep its medieval tradition of reading the marriage banns. Not because it is worried about illegal marriages taking place, but because it hopes it will help to keep up congregation numbers among young people. Members of the General Synod, who met and voted on it in February, said that ditching the popular tradition would mean losing an important source of new worshippers. Just under 45,000 people got married in CofE churches in So, as one archdeacon explained, reading the banns gives us access to 90,000 people in the age group, which is the age group that we struggle to reach. 11 Laughter Lines Money There is the story of a minister who got up one Sunday and announced to his congregation: I have good news and bad news. The good news is, we have enough money to pay for our new building programme. The bad news is, it s still out there in your pockets. Windy Three elderly ministers, all hard of hearing, were playing golf one sunny spring morning. The Methodist minister observed, Windy, isn t it? No, the Baptist pastor said, It s Thursday. The Anglican vicar agreed: So am I! Let s go and get a pint. Nine I was meeting a friend in a restaurant and as I went in, I noticed two pretty girls looking carefully at me. Nine, I heard one whisper as I passed. Feeling pleased with myself, I swaggered over to my friend and told him a girl had just rated me a nine out of ten. I don t want to ruin it for you, he said, but when I walked in, they were speaking German. When technology goes wrong The father of a family - who was a big-time techie - got his oldest daughter an iphone for her birthday. He also got an ipad for his son. Later he bought an ipod for the youngest daughter. Then, when his wedding anniversary rolled around, he got his wife an iron. That s when the fight began. Graham Mason s Golf Column Graham to friend: Why didn t you watch where my ball went? Friend to Graham: I m so sorry. Your ball doesn t usually go anywhere, and this took me completely by surprise. 11

Historically, the Church of England has had its share of eccentric clergy. Even nowadays, hiding away in remote parishes, there are still some colourful clergy about. Clergy such as the elderly, Anglo-Catholic Uncle Eustace, who is incumbent in the small parish of St James-the-Least-of All, somewhere in Very Rural England. Eustace despairs of his nephew, Darren, who has become an Evangelical curate in a busy urban parish and so he writes letters, to try and properly 'educate' Darren in parish life. On the hazards of baptisms My dear Nephew Darren 14 The Rectory St. James the Least Your new thermostatically controlled, underwater illuminated baptismal tank with wave simulation, for total immersions, sounds rather intimidating. I am slightly surprised you don t have computer-generated doves flying overhead, in order to add that final touch of authenticity. I would imagine that to perform baptisms in your tank, you need a degree in electrical engineering as much as one in theology. I do, however, agree with your Vicar s decision to stop the practice of you performing these rituals in the river Mersey. It is one thing for your newly baptised to emerge from the waters filled with the Holy Spirit, and quite another to emerge filled with typhoid. Better to give them a baptismal certificate, rather than a free ride to the hospital for a stomach pump. The river Jordan may have been all very well for John the Baptist, but I expect that even he would hesitate at the river Mersey. Had I baptised dear Miss Pemberton in the Mersey last month at 93 years, taking the decision a little late in life (I did not attempt to hold her

in one arm) being a lady of such proportions, I suspect she would have constituted a shipping hazard. I appreciate your suggestion that such procedures would look charming on the banks of our local Cotswold stream, but irrespective of our differing theologies, I would not want to be seen by parishioners in my bathing costume. Such apparel may be all very well when I am on holiday somewhere where I am totally unknown, but it hardly seems fitting for an honorary Canon in his parish. I do concede that baptisms in medieval fonts can have their own particular problems. The plug in our own has never fitted properly, and so after filling it, I know I have precisely 16 minutes and 45 seconds to come to the actual baptism, otherwise the water has disappeared entirely. As I have discovered over the years, it is impossible to look dignified disappearing into the vestry half way through the Service in order to fetch a second bucket. For baptisms in winter, the presentation from Admiral Barnaby of the small silver hammer has been a great help in order to break the ice that slowly forms across the surface as the service proceeds. In future, as you and your own candidates luxuriate in this heated baptismal spa, do spare a thought for those of us who maintain the true faith. Your loving uncle, Eustace Always remember... Church should be a place where Jesus feels at home 15

A Strange Farewell One of the most extraordinary passages in the Bible tells the story of Christ s goodbye, which we call the Ascension: While He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven. And they, after worshipping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple praising God. It was the last time the apostles would see Jesus. They had experienced the utter catastrophe of His death, followed within days by the triumph of His resurrection. Later, He left them. Instead of the sadness we might expect after His final farewell, they were exuberant and went back to Jerusalem. What an extraordinary reaction. Jesus had gone, Jerusalem was fraught with danger, yet they seemed brimful with confidence. Ringing in their ears was His repeated teaching about the Kingdom of God and the commission to preach forgiveness of sins throughout the world, beginning at Jerusalem. They were to wait there until they were clothed with power from on high. Far from feeling abandoned, they were full of hope and eager to be equipped for their vocation. They and the Christian community would represent Christ on earth, as He represented them in heaven, seated at the right hand of the Father, in the words of the Creed. All this is temporary. God has not planned the world to remain in its present state in perpetuity. Our particular era may seem to be particularly grim, but it is but one strand in human history and we are no more distinctive than any other generation. Although the world as it is seems to be lasting a long time, we are living in what the writer of the Letter to the Hebrews calls the final age. We are to anticipate a finale, when Christ s rule will be apparent to all. There s an Old Testament proverb which is particularly apt: Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails. Isn t that exactly what we hope for every time we pray for God s will to be done on earth, as in heaven? The Archbishop of Canterbury and others are prompting us to join in a global wave of prayer between Ascension and Pentecost (25 May to 4 June), concentrating on Your Kingdom Come. That will make us usurpers, praying for God s Kingdom to displace all others! It will also make us one with Christ. 16

Acts for Everyone At the end of May comes Ascension Day (25th), a bit of a neglected festival in the Church. As Luke reminds us in Acts 1:1-11, it was the opportunity for Jesus to commission His disciples His witnesses in the world: But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. (Acts 1:8). What is a witness? a witness knows Jesus: A credible witness speaks of what they know personally. The disciples had spent 40 days with Jesus and now they were called to share that experience and relationship with others. What is my story of how Jesus is alive in my life? a witness grows in Jesus: Jesus told them to wait for the gift of the Spirit to empower them as witnesses. Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.. The Spirit equips us to display Jesus character (fruit) and enables us to witness (gifts). How does our life demonstrate the difference Jesus makes? a witness goes for Jesus: They were called to witness for Jesus in ever-increasing circles of influence. For us, this means family and friends, workplace and community, and the wider world. Where is God calling us to serve Him? The story is told of Jesus arriving in heaven after the Ascension, being welcomed by the angels. Gabriel asked Jesus, what is your plan for everyone to know your love? Jesus replied, I have given my disciples the task of carrying the message into all the world. Gabriel s face dropped, These are unpredictable men, what if they fail? After a pause Jesus answered, There is no other plan! 21

Prayers & Poems Waiting (Acts1:1-11) He told us to wait, then went away. After all the excitement, all the joy of having Him back, He has gone again. Yet this time there is hope, This time there is His promise Of power, of His Spirit, Of a new dimension of His presence. This leaving is different Now we know He's forever alive. And we wait in confidence and anticipation to witness to the world and we wait for His Spirit to come By Daphne Kitching Presence Prayer Heavenly Father, Parting from our loved ones is difficult. We long to be together, but sometimes it isn't possible and we don't always understand. The disciples must have wanted Jesus to stay with them, after the joy of the resurrection and those wonderful reunions. And yet you knew that it was better for them - and for us - that Jesus returned to you so that He could send His Spirit to live in us, to comfort and strengthen us and to work through us. Thank you that even though human parting is inevitable, because of Jesus eternal life is freely offered to those who trust in Him. And while we are here on earth you promise never to leave us or forsake us. Thank you, Father, for your love - and your bigger picture! In Jesus name. Amen. 23 The power of the Man Ascended You will be His witness to all men of what you have seen and heard. (Acts 22:15) What power! The apostle Paul has just been physically attacked by the crowd, then rescued by the Romans and is now, not on a counselling couch, but preaching a sermon! He tells the crowd of his support in Stephen s death; then of his Damascus Road experience and his subsequent commission to the Gentile world. 1. Staying power. Paul is near the end, but he can still face riots, beatings and prison and come up running. It was the knowledge that he had been SENT by One risen, ascended and one day returning that kept him on the road. As preacher Alexander Maclaren once commented, The world has not seen its last of Jesus Christ. Such an Ascension, after such a life, cannot be the end of Him. 2. Winsome power. Paul loved his fellow-jews and this came across in his speaking to them all in their mother tongue (22:1); also in his clear demonstration that he was one of them. If we messengers don t love those to whom we witness, it will be evident and we might as well pack it in. 3. Cutting power. When Paul told of his part in the murder of Stephen, and that Christ was now sending him to the Gentiles, the riot started again (22:19-23). At some point we too have to put the knife in about what it is to defy the rule of God. 4. Moral power. Paul is then about to be beaten by the Romans, but being a Roman citizen himself he challenges them. Er. Is this legal? It wasn t, and they back down. Through it all, one man sent by God was in control. Lesson: Learn to take the Ascension of Christ as your emboldenment! 24 Fake news Fake news has received much media attention lately. The spread of disinformation, propaganda, and fabrication of fact is hardly new: humans have been spreading mistruths through trusted sources for years. What has taken it to a new level, however, is the way it is now spread: social media. Fake news items can pop up on our social media stream at any time and, being one of myriad other pieces of information passing before our eyes, they are easily read without care for checking the source. Add to this the fact that they are usually sensational in content, can be shared or liked in just one click, and you have the ingredients for gossip and lies on a global scale. Some media organisations are taking measures to fight back by hiring companies to check facts, or design algorithms to stop the spread of fake stories. Yet even the best software is never 100% successful. Human wisdom, or just basic common sense, will always need to be applied. In this age of information overload and like buttons, it can be so easy to accept things without proper thought, to forward or like things that may be inaccurate or heavily biased. Even beyond social media, though, news has become increasingly concise, presented in bite-sized portions for us to easily digest as we rush from one task to another. Nuances and truths get lost in the sound-bites of news headlines and our personal updates. So how are we to respond to this as Christians seeking to engage with contemporary culture? How do we maintain integrity, authenticity and honesty in our speech and relationships both online and offline? And what false news might we be presenting about our own lives? We re called to be salt and light, to be wise as serpents but innocent as doves. When reading the news, whatever form that takes, how often do we check the source, find out what other news sites are saying, and critically weigh up agendas? 24
