The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it. (Matthew 13:44-46) What have you given up this Lent? For many Lent is an opportunity to exercise a little bit of self control on an area of our lives that needs attention, though often it is to control the amount of chocolate, biscuits and coffee we consume. But is this all that there is to Lent, giving up on the things we enjoy? Actually no. Lent is about spending quality time with God in order to focus on our relationship with Him and to sort out those things that come in between. God has so much more to give us and wants to do more in ours lives, but only if we give Him more of ourselves, our time, our talents and our money. Lent enables to really focus on what is really important in our lives and to reprioritise God and His Kingdom! That in essence is what the above parable is about. Recognising the goodness of God and giving our all to acquire it. I would like to leave you with this story to ponder on over the remaining weeks of Lent; 4

In a dream a man was told where there was treasure hidden in a nearby castle under a blue stone. The dream was quite clear and he could remember every bit of it. Yet he did not bother even to see if the stone was there in the castle. He told his dream to a friend. His friend went immediately and found a great treasure under the blue stone. He became very rich and although he was generous toward his friend, his friend realised that because he had not bothered when an opportunity was offered him he had missed out in a big way. How often do we miss out on the fullness of life because we do not take up the promises of our God? Yours in Christ. Dave Bishop (Revd) St James Church is open every Tuesday 9.00am 11.00am for free coffee/tea private prayer and quiet time or just a friendly chat 5

Readings for March The following readings will be used in the St James Services this month: 6th March 2016 Evening Service - 2 Corinthians 5 v 16 end & Luke 15 v 1 3, 11b 32 13th March 2016 Morning Service - 1 Corinthians 2 v 12, 13, 16, 1 Corinthians 14 v 1, Ephesians 4 v 4 6, & John 12 v th March 2016 Evening Service - Philippians 2 v 5 11 & Luke 23 v th March 2016 Morning Service - Acts 10 v & Luke 24 v th March 2016 Evening Service - TBA The outlook for churches in 2016 During 2016 some 400 churches are likely to be started or planted in the UK, offset by perhaps 340 closing (many such due to small, non-viable congregations). About a quarter of the new churches could be Fresh Expressions. While four-fifths of the new churches will probably be in England, the other three countries of the UK will see new church beginnings also, especially among immigrant and independent churches. Many new groupings of churches have started in recent years, like Network Churches and the Filling Station in Scotland, which start new churches or encourage existing ones. There is also likely to be a net increase of some 200 new ministers this year, many of them women, the growth being seen especially among the black Pentecostal churches. So 2016 promises to be a year of gains and losses, as all years are, but there is no decrease in the extent of fields white for harvest. 7

Laughter Lines Snoring A clergyman consulted his doctor about his wife s snoring. It has to STOP, he insisted. The doctor was intrigued: Does it really bother you that much? Well, it s not just me, explained the minister. She is bothering the whole congregation. Beware of these contagious diseases in church Frontophobia: A morbid fear of the front seats in church. The sufferer is struck by an attack just inside the church door, and collapses in the nearest back seat. Ear Frequency Destruction: Caused by sitting near the loudspeaker when the minister is singing full volume, off-key, etc., into the microphone. Sermonic Throat: A dreaded choking caused by the start of the sermon. The sufferer unwraps a sweet very slowly and noisily, which seems to effect a complete cure. Double Auricular Clearance: A condition due to the simultaneous opening of both ear ducts, which allows sound to enter one ear and leave the other without any absorption thereof. Condition is acute during Bible reading and sermon. Accelerate Vocal Response: A condition which causes the sufferer to try to sing faster than the organ. Retarded Vocal Response: A condition which causes the sufferer to try to sing slower than the organ. Theexits: A condition where the sufferer rushes for the exit before the minister gets there. Church Meeting Paralysis: This can strike suddenly, when a post in the church needs filling. A good dose of enthusiasm works wonders with this sad affliction. The bump A man who had just undergone a very complicated operation kept complaining about a bump on his head and a terrible headache. Since his operation had been an intestinal one, the nurse was concerned. Finally she spoke to the doctor about it. The doctor assured her, Don t worry, he really does have a bump on his head. About halfway through the operation, we ran out of anesthetic. 11

Historically, the Church of England has had its share of eccentric clergy. Even nowadays, hiding away in remote parishes, there are still some colourful clergy about. Clergy such as the elderly, Anglo-Catholic Uncle Eustace, who is incumbent in the small parish of St James-the-Least-of All, somewhere in Very Rural England. Eustace despairs of his nephew, Darren, who has become an Evangelical curate in a busy urban parish and so he writes letters, to try and properly 'educate' Darren in parish life. On how to run a church council meeting The Rectory St. James the Least My dear Nephew Darren Clearly, the sight of your Vicar running out of the room half way through your last church council meeting, saying he should have stayed as a traffic warden, where he was universally liked, has unnerved you. It would have unnerved me too, since a universally popular traffic warden is an exceptional creature. But perhaps it is necessary to give you some advice for the day when you do chair your first church council meeting. 1. Consider every agenda issue carefully beforehand and decide what you would like to do. Then, at the meeting, consult widely, listen to every opinion, weigh all the arguments, and then do precisely what you had decided before the meeting ever took place. 2. Never, ever, let council members discuss hymns, which avoids getting blood on the carpets. 14

3. Arrange the seating in rows, all facing the front, so that everyone has to respond directly to you. The last thing you want is for council members to be able to discuss matters freely with one another. 4. Start smoking a pipe. At those times when you are faced with an issue when you really are unsure of how to respond, taking out your pipe, dismantling it, searching for a pipe cleaner, squinting down the stem to see if it is clean, mopping out the goo in the bowl, searching for your tobacco pouch, filling the pipe, tamping it down, asking if you can borrow matches and attempting to light it several times over, will give you more than sufficient time to formulate a reply. Once you have perfected the routine, the silence will have been so protracted, that most of the committee will have long forgotten what the question was anyway. 5. If someone is talking too long, consult your diary, noisily and obsessively, about next month s appointments, or write a note to a committee member who is at the back of the room and get it passed to him. The speaker should soon get the message. These are the simpler techniques of committee management. The advanced procedures must wait until you are strong enough to bear them. Your loving uncle, Eustace Always remember... Church should be a place where Jesus feels at home 15

The world at its worst and the world at its best At the very time Christians celebrate the great Easter Festival commemorating Christ s victory over evil, we are confronted by news of death, barbarity and terror across the world. Unless we choose to live in fantasyland, we must look for the connection between the daily news and the Bible. First, Jesus Christ did not escape death. Nor did He promise His followers a trouble-free world. Actually they themselves can expect an above average share of suffering. Secondly, we believe that Christ s death was no accident. The Crucifixion was a calculated risk: God s costly and unexpected intervention in human affairs. The Christian claim that God s Son was put to death is deeply offensive to religious groups who cannot believe that a remote and all-powerful deity to whom human beings should yield has Himself submitted to our brutality. Yet it is in this way that God perseveres with his creation without violating it. Thirdly, Christ s way of sacrifice, forgiveness and reconciliation is God s ultimate offer to the human race. We are going to learn it, if necessary the hard way, however long it takes. The first reaction of the people who witnessed the resurrection of Jesus Christ was of fear. Incredulity, too, but fear. In the last book of the Bible, an encounter with the Risen Christ is described like this: I saw one like the Son of Man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash across his chest. His head and his hair were white as white wool, white as snow; his eyes were like a flame of fire, his feet were like burnished bronze refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of many waters When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. That is the natural response to a heavenly vision. Only then can we hear the words spoken by this terrifying figure: Do not be afraid: I am the first and the last, and the living one. I was dead, and see I am alive forever and ever; and I have the keys of death and the world of the dead. God s rule over the world the world at its worst and the world at its best was reasserted at the first Easter. This is no domestic, ecclesiastical event. It is God s glorious yet solemn challenge to his rebellious creation: the grip of evil and death is terminally weakened. Christ is Risen! He is Risen indeed! 16

Captivated by the Easter message Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed (1 Corinthians 15:11) I They We You Here, in this famous fifteenth chapter on Christ s resurrection, the apostle Paul stresses the uncompromisingly unanimous message of the New Testament believers preachers and listeners alike. 1. Who were the preachers? Answer: It didn t matter! They might have been Paul, Barnabas, Timothy or Silas but there was no compromise or deviation in the convictions of those first century Christian leaders. We preached! Certainly those earliest churches would have developed different orders and customs. Some had elders to govern their affairs; others had overseers or Bishops. Differences would have arisen over matters like Baptism. No worries! For the true hallmark of an authentic Gospel church is that its preachers always come across as resurrection people of conviction and courage. Courage, certainly because such preaching nearly always brings persecution. But as the historian T.R. Glover has written, It was worth martyrdom. 2. What did they preach? Ah, that s easy! Move from the four pronouns of verse 11 to the four verbs earlier in the passage in v. 3-5, that Christ died, was buried, was raised and appeared. Four historic affirmations all in one sentence, and all as confirmation of what had been earlier prophesied in the Scriptures. In that one sentence is compressed the vibrant, historic message as of first importance. Some fatuously argue that, while Christ indeed died and was buried, He only rose in the imaginations and memories of the early Church. They will hold that Christ rose not bodily, but symbolically. as a kind of metaphor. Forget that. All four verbs occur in the one sentence. And always that mention of the third day. What was raised was what was buried! 3. Have you believed? We preach. you believed. Undoubtedly there would have been some wobblers, but there is no doubting that there was a bedrock, a standard of agreement that bonded preachers and believers into a force that would eventually prove more durable than any other message in the world. Nothing else would last. And nothing else WILL last. 21

PRAYERS & POEMS... Resurrection (John 20:1-18) Even in the darkness Still she went, Stumbling, longing for light, Finding a stone-moved emptiness. Then her running And the running and out-running of the men, The believing whilst not understanding, The tears and the angels with questions and messages. Death transformed to Life In the turning, And revelation in a name, Mary! Lord, sometimes I don't understand And the world seems dark, But I choose to turn from darkness to you. Speak my name Lord, Hold me safe In your resurrection power and light. By Daphne Kitching He died He died that we might be forgiven, He died to make us good, That we might go at last to heaven, Saved by his precious blood. By Cecil Frances Alexander The way When Jesus bowed his head, And dying took our place, The veil was rent, a way was found To that pure home of grace. 23 Looking for the Resurrection An older couple were driving down the motorway when the wife got a frantic call from their daughter. Mum, watch out! Some lunatic is driving a car the wrong way down your motorway! The wife warns her husband, who is driving. He replies tensely: One lunatic? There are hundreds of them! What we see is determined by our perspective on life. In the Nicene Creed we say We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. In the gospel accounts of the Resurrection there is a lot of looking and seeing. Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome went early to the tomb. They saw the stone rolled aside and inside the tomb a young man dressed in white said to them: Don t be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him (Mark 16: 6,7). Like the women we would probably have been left trembling and bewildered by what we saw that morning. Had the body been taken? Was the young man an angel or deceiver? Was Jesus raised to life again, or was this an elaborate hoax? Easter gives us a choice. We can approach life looking for disappointment, fear and despair. Or we look for Resurrection and find not just an empty tomb, but encounter the living Christ. He continues to meet people in their daily lives bringing new hope, forgiveness of sin, healing and wholeness and the assurance of his presence through the darkest of times. God invites us to see our lives differently and look for Christ s Resurrection life at work in our lives and the people around us. MAGAZINE ARTICLES If you would like to submit an article for publication in this Parish Magazine, please note that the closing date is the third Sunday of each month. 24 Some hints about prayer, as Easter approaches Acknowledgments are always appreciated. Parents enjoy giving to their children, but they also teach them to say thank-you. When Jesus healed ten lepers, only one bothered to express his thanks. For a couple of weeks, try saying just thank you' prayers. If you are out of the habit, you may find gratitude needs fresh effort, but makes a big difference to the day. Why is prayer needed? Think of yourself as one of God s agents in your neighbourhood. He wants you as a conduit; when you pray, you are opening up a means of collaborating with God s will. C. S. Lewis suggested that God passes on to human beings any responsibility which they can take. Work and prayer are two ways of accomplishing what God wants. Dealing with doubt. You may find yourself asking if it s all an illusion. A group of Rabbis met after the Holocaust to put God on trial. How could He have let his people suffer in that way? They considered the evidence, then pronounced a guilty verdict, or more precisely said, He owes us something. Then they went to pray as they had always done. Prayer is instinctive. Try doubting your doubts. Is prayer superstition? There s a joke about a driver who was desperate for a parking place and promised God he would go to church next Sunday and put 10 in the plate if God found him one. Nothing happened. He increased the offer to 100, but without success. Finally, he offered 1,000 and immediately found a space. The deal s off, said the driver, I found one anyway. A former Archbishop of Canterbury, William Temple, was asked if answers to prayer were just coincidences. He replied, the more often I pray, the more often coincidences happen. By the way, bribing God doesn t work! You are not alone. Not only is Jesus alongside you when you pray, so are billions of others, even if you can t see them. We join with angels and archangels and the whole company of heaven as well as the Church across the world, every time we pray. The pattern prayer taught by Jesus begins Our Father, so it s for all of us. 24
