1 The Parish Beacon Volume 35 No. 9 October 2014 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ The third date has been set. Third date?! Yes, the third date for the Trivia Challenge has been set for October 19 th. That is a just a few weeks away. If you know me well, you know I don t like changing my plans. (Although these changes were good and proper.) King Solomon, the wisest of all people, tells us, Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established (Proverbs 16:3). God s Word makes it clear that wise people make plans. Why, then, are we often reluctant to plan? Is it because we don t like to have our plans changed? Is it because we don t like taking the time to plan? Is it because we don t feel like we have enough assets to bother with planning? Is it because we don t like facing unpleasant topics? We may not want to plan because it could involve considering unpleasant topics such as debt, unemployment, disability, cost of schooling or retirement, and death. Examining how we ve spent God s money can bring feelings of guilt when we think of our past mistakes. The amount of money doesn t matter. We can misuse our God-given financial gifts whatever their size. We may not want to plan because a plan places limits on us and makes us accountable. In the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30), Jesus reminds us that the master held his three slaves accountable for what they did with the talents he gave them. As caretakers of God s property, we are accountable to Him for all we have. As caretakers of everything, because everything is God s, we are accountable to Him. As the old saying goes, People don t plan to fail, they fail to plan. So what are you planning? Faithfully serve God. Regularly read the Word of God. Weekly attend God s Divine Service. Daily pray to God. Consistently give tithes and offerings to God. May God bless you with your plans! 5 NEWS Anita Nicholson WHAT IS PARISH NURSING? Our Redeemer Lutheran Church is need of a parish nurse. As you read this information, and think of a nurse that would be wonderful in filling this role, please ask them to consider applying. If you are a nurse reading this information, please prayerfully consider this role as a way to serve the spiritual and health needs of our congregation. According to International Parish Nurse Resource Center (IPNRC): Parish nurses are licensed, registered nurses who practice wholistic health for self, individuals, and the community, using nursing knowledge combined with spiritual care. They function as members of the pastoral team. The focus of their work is on the intentional care of the spirit, assisting the members of the church community to maintain and/or regain wholeness in body, mind, and spirit. The mission of parish nursing is the intentional integration of the practices of faith and nursing so that people can achieve wholeness in, with, and through the church in which they serve. In order to be a parish nurse, one: must have an active Iowa Nursing license. should plan to complete a parish nurse training course to prepare for this ministry. (Note: A course is offered twice a year in Eastern Iowa) should be organized, flexible, and a good communicator. History of Parish Nursing: Granger E. Westberg ( ) was a pioneer who, over the course of a long and rich career, broke new ground in the areas of theology, clinical pastoral education, and whole person healthcare. Westberg was a Lutheran clergyman who had been a parish pastor, hospital chaplain, professor of practical theology and teacher of medical students. His work was based on his belief that healthcare transcends physical care, because true healing involves the whole person in the context of their community. One of Westberg s most significant contributions to the church and the community at large was the founding of the parish nurse movement. Originally developed in 1984 as a partnership between Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois and six area congregations, this new ecumenical movement soon grew to encompass nurses and churches around the country. 6 Year to date negative cash flow $40, Concerns about the sanctuary air conditioning were discussed. It needs a valve control system to balance cool air & humidity. Randy Staab from Mechanical Services, Inc. will prepare and present options. The Lutheran Church Extension Fund Capital Funding Services has devised a Stewardship Campaign for Our Redeemer. Though the Board discussion was favorable, discussion suggested that before accepting it, a second option regarding capital campaign costs would be appropriate for comparison. KUDOS Our Redeemer s Board of Directors recognizes MIKE APPLEGARTH MIRIAM MEYER JEFF NICHOLSON for strenuous work in deck-building and cleanup on the Arkansas Tornado Recovery Mission Thank you all! 6

7 Motion made and carried to accept the nominations for 2015 officers (see page 8) Concern was expressed that the sculpture on the sanctuary wall is darker or blacker than desired, either because of dirt/dust accumulation, natural aging process, or indirect lighting. A motion was made and carried that the Board of Directors investigate a proper method of refurbishment to restore its normal color. Pastor Hartwig complimented the preschool teachers, Kaja Mueller and Kate Ramsey, for a high level of professionalism, strong lesson plans, and a caring and loving atmosphere. Stephen Ministry: Pastor mentioned that the pairing of Ministers with congregation members is in process. He explained the role and function of the Ministry and encouraged all of us to spread the word about its purpose and effectiveness. Vision 2020: Pastor commented that much work has been done via committees with dozens of people involved, thus solid planning is underway and information will be shared soon with the congregation. Discussion took place about the pros and cons of early first communion. 9 Small Group Ministry Mission Statement: To grow in grace using our spiritual gifts, through good stewardship for the benefit of the group so that the body of Christ may be built up. Updates from Small Group Ministry. Financial Peace University Updates The small group attending FPU has just completed session 2. This week they focused on relating with money. Be sure to check out the Financial Peace University to learn more. Remember the song that starts with, "One of these things is not like the other"? That's pretty much how men and women and Nerds and Free Spirits interact when it comes to money. With men, money tends to be a scorecard. The better they do with it, the better they feel. With women, money generally means security. The more they have, the better they feel. Nerds want to know how much, when, where and why. Free Spirits have this thing called a "life" and like to use money to enjoy it every once in a while. No matter what combo you have in your marriage, there's happy news. The easiest and best way to line up your goals and improve communication is to sit down and make a budget together. Nerds: Don't go playing cash commando and insist that everything be your way. Free Spirits: Make sure you give your input! Talk to your spouse and agree about what you both want. Get on it and get it done! The way we handle money impacts every part of our lives. This week you've learned how to work together with your spouse, even if you're the Nerd and your spouse is the Free Spirit! You've also started learning how to teach your kids about money and how to find accountability if you're single. Thoughts for the Week "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:21 There's nothing wrong with building wealth, but never let that passion take the place of the relationships in your life. Remember, getting out of debt is all about changing your family tree! 10 Stephen Ministry By Bill Benson Our Redeemer is blessed to have 11 commissioned Stephen Ministers. While they are prayerfully and expectantly waiting for their care receiver assignments, they have been busy. One of the facets of the Stephen ministry training is that you are never done. So after 50 hours of training there still is much to learn and practice. Continuing education is a cornerstone on which Stephen Ministry is built. Over the summer months our Stephen ministers have covered the topics: Ministry for the dying, their families and friends and Caring for people during and after hospitalization. These topics generated interest and introspection. That interest was further enhanced by a presentation by Pastor Scheer. Pastor Scheer has retired after years of serving the Lord and His Church as a hospital chaplain. I had asked Pastor to present for about 30 minutes. We ended up using our entire 2 and a half hours learning from him and asking wonderful insightful questions. Pastor s presentation again affirmed the importance of the care we will provide. There will be many joys and also challenges. We are in the process of planning another Stephen Ministry training class to begin in January. Please pray to see if God can use you in this ministry. If you have the following qualities concerning Christian care God can use you to minister and care for His people. Christian caring is: genuine, patient, available, present, empathetic, dependable, accepting, unpretentious, selfless, and assertive. Please prayerfully consider becoming a Stephen Minister. Any Stephen leader will be happy to talk with you. Remember our motto: We care, Christ cures.. Please keep the Stephen Ministry in your prayers. The leadership team is: Pastor Hartwig Kevin Sellers Marvel Titone Kathy Schweer Bill Benson. LWML National Convention Save the dates! 11 Family Ministry Matters Equipping You to Be a Faith Leader in Your Home Inspire a Love of Reading Now that school is in full swing, book lists, reading logs, homework, and journals are everywhere. There s no doubt that reading has many benefits. Studies have shown that kids who read regularly gain confidence, increase their vocabulary, and improve their test scores. Here are some everyday ways to instill a love of reading. Read together. Consider reading the same book your child is reading. Or have your child read to you. As you read, stop and talk about the book. Ask questions. Not only will it help your child with reading comprehension, but you'll also have special time together. If they can't read yet, read to them. It's never too early to start! Family devotions. Kids and adults take turns reading different parts of the Bible story and devotion books and talk about what God has done, is doing, and will do for His beloved children. Books before bedtime. If your children are engrossed in a good book, can bedtime slide a little later? Simply reading one more chapter sends a positive message and reinforces a love of reading. Be an example. Let your kids catch you reading and meditating on God s Word and turning to Him in prayer. Consider placing your personal devotion materials your Bible, devotion book, and prayer journal in a place that is visible to your kids. Encourage them with their very own devotional books. 12 Dear friends and loved ones, August 2014 We'll another school year finished and I guess I blinked and we're now into the 2nd week of the brand new school year. I think I missed something! WOW!! It's amazing how quickly time flies. The Lord is so good and blesses us in so many ways and yet I still always feel like I'm missing a large portion of events and life. I know that's not true, but never-the-less, I continue in my quest to find a solution for slooowwinggg dddddooowwnnn ttttiiime. Maybe that's the solution, just use lots of extra letters!?! Anyway, we had a wonderful, if not extremely short, time to reconnect with many people in the US this summer. It was great visiting on the east coast and then basically spending 1 week in 3 different places. Petersen family (Indiana), Springfield, IL (where our home is), and Kristin's mom (Kansas). We still made plenty of presentations, in each area, about the great work the Lord is doing and also got our normal checkups taken care of. The Lord is really awesome at blessings us with good health. Our last week in the US was kind of the "work-horse" for us. In the last 7 days, we were in 6 hotels in 5 cities and ended with a couple days of sight-seeing in Chicago with the kids. We were able to show them our (Kristin and Enoch s) stomping grounds during college days, including places in downtown Chicago where we used to go like Gino's East, Ed Debevic's and other great places. With the new school year, we've now come to the startling realization that we are now parents of a JUNIOR in high school. Sydney, our little baby girl, will be leaving for college by our next "home reconnect". WHAT!!! I can't believe that, and yet, I'm amazed at the way in which the Lord has worked in her life and I see the incredible young lady she has turned into. Lucas, is close on her heals and we know he will become (is becoming) a fine young man also. We just want him to slow down a little for us [back to my original quest - see above]. As soon as we arrived back in Ankara, we were back into the thick of things with preparations for the VBS program that we are a part of every year for the Ankara community. This year was "Weird Animals", which we were pleased to see being used in a number of our US stops. It was a great time for everyone as we learned of Jesus' one-of-a-kind love. Kristin was the Director over the whole program, Sydney was a crew leader for 3 rd & 4 th grades, Lucas was the Techno Man and Enoch ran the opening and closing programs each day. [pictures below] There were over 80 kids attending, plus another 20 teen helpers and another 20 volunteers. We had 6 Turkish families send their kids along with a number of embassy/military families where this was their first exposure to the Gospel. Our celebration service on Sunday had a packed house (as usual) with 6-8 new families and lots of excitement that only the love of God can bring to people's lives. We were also excited to have our new LCMS pastor - Rev. Joe Asher with us for the 10 days during and after VBS. He was helping us with the program, but also looking into where he and his wife Jennie would be staying, studying Turkish and meeting with many people in the community. They will be in our midst within the next few months, we pray. Blessings on your week, The Petersens 12

15 Message received from Ed Mell, Lutheran Disaster Response in Arkansas to Our Redeemer Mission trip participants who helped build decks to access new homes for those who lost their homes in the tornado: Thank you so much for making a difference in the lives of the families recovering from the tornado in Central Arkansas. The sharing of your time, abilities and all your hard work was very much appreciated. A lady driver from Little Rock to Conway each day to work watched us build the deck in Mayflower from I-40. She stopped by to see the homeowner to take a look after it was finished & said she wanted her sister (whose home was also destroyed by the tornado) to be able to have a deck just like this one. She and the homeowner loved it! God s blessings on your ministry. In Christ, Ed October 5 th is Mission Sunday. Would you like to help provide the Word of God to men and women in the armed services? We will be accepting free-will donations to purchase Military Bible Sticks for US Troops. 20 Night Drive Ephesians 5: 8-14 Each vehicle gropes its way through the night surrounded by a small aura of light dimming its lights when meeting another permitting the driver to see only a constricted view of the landscape-each awaits the dawn. We Christians journey on our way through life surrounded by His light not dimming our lights when meeting another but permitting others to see past this constricted view called earth to heaven-we await the Second Dawn.
