1 First Avenue and Court Street Iowa City, IA Phone: Weekly Newsletter - January 19/20, 2019 ~ Second Sunday after the Epiphany ~ WHY SHOULD I TRUST THE BIBLE? Through March 3 Sunday Mornings (9 sessions) 9:30 am-10:15 am You have got tough questions about the Bible. Maybe you ve even heard things like, The Bible is racist. Or, The Bible has too many errors and edits. Or, The Bible is merely a mythological story like Homer s Odyssey. This book tackles accusations like those head-on. Pastor Sutton compares the Bible to writings that have been deemed more credible than the Bible, like the Book of Mormon, encyclopedias, and even Shakespeare s works. He tests the Bible using the same rigorous standards that have been used to test those other writings. He examines historical evidence, witness accounts, and translation concerns. By the end, you ll be able to better defend your faith when its very foundation is attacked. You ll get many of your tough questions answered. And you ll see that when all other texts fall, the Bible still stands as completely, undeniably trustworthy. If you ordered a book, it is in your mailbox. UKANDU Summer Servant Opportunity Initial Meeting Come hear more about this one-of-a-kind servant opportunity offered for adults and youth (8 th grade and older). Open to the entire congregation. Sunday, January 20 Following late service Starting around 12 pm Room 208/210 9:15 am Music Preschool B 4 th Grade 5 th -8 th Grade Sunday School 9:30 am Sunday School Preschool A-4 th Grade 10:00 am Music 5 th -8 th Grades 10:15 am Sunday School/Music Ends Mary Visits Elizabeth Luke 1:39-56 God remembered Mary, filling her womb with the world s Savior. God remembers us and, through His Word and Sacraments, fills us with Christ Jesus, granting us full salvation. Like Mary, we offer our humble praise.

2 If you were to call the police from a church classroom or other church room would you know the room number from inside that room? How do we best protect our church family and those meeting in our church while maintaining the openness and inclusivity unique to a Christian church? A committee on safety and security has been formed at Our Redeemer to help address these questions and many others. With the uptick in church violence we are considering locking all church doors 10 minutes after church begins with someone at the main church doors to let in late arrivals. Look for more on church safety and security coming in the future. If you have any questions, you can contact Martin Wenck. The kitchen is in need of some cleaning. The high school youth have scrubbed the cupboards-thank YOU! Volunteers needed to clean: Ovens and stove tops. You can use self cleaning mode. Remove the racks. Manuals are in the drawer under the microwave. Dishwasher area Sinks Refrigerators Freezer You can me or text what you or your group will be cleaning. There are cleaning supplies located in the kitchen and storage areas. This would be nice to finish before all the spring events start happening. Dianna Reuter d.reuter@mchsi.com BASICS OF THE FAITH February 8/9, 2019 Friday 7 9 pm Saturday 9:30 3:30 pm During the month of February Appropriately titled, this course begins a six unit examination of the basics of the Christian faith. Taken from the Bible and as understood by the Lutheran Church, we will explore the role of the Triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The revelation of God through the Bible and the role of the catechism will be discussed first. The Biblical message of Law and Gospel will be detailed. Finally, we will end with discussing the victorious and sanctified life of the Christian. Let the office know if you are interested in attending or put your name on the sign up sheet by the nametags, either as a review or in preparation for becoming a member of Our Redeemer.

3 JOIN OUR REDEEMER KIDS-MAKE A NOISY OFFERING! Noisy offerings will be collected during the Saturday, January 26 and Sunday, January 27 services. The children of the congregation are asked to bring their offerings that they have collected in the banks that they were given during the Immeasurably More campaign. Big kids are encouraged to throw their loose change in the buckets as well during this second offering to help the Immeasurably More receipts grow. As the banks are emptied and coins put in the bucket, it makes a clanging noise and that is why it is called the Noisy Offering. Yes, we are making a joyful noise unto the Lord! (Psalm 66:1) You provide the labor, the church provides the mowers. Sign up today under the Blessed You are Here sign to help with the summer lawn mowing. Teams of two will take a week at a time the more that sign up, the fewer times you have to mow. CHALLENGE Fun Fellowship February 10 Following Late Service Want to have lots of laughs, smiles, fun fellowship, and great food? Come join us for Trivia Challenge in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, February 10 th after the 10:30 worship service. Bring an appetizer to share. This event is for Our Redeemer members and any friends or family you want to invite. If you want to invite friends or family to sit at a table for 8, or just come by yourself and we will have you sit at a table with others; you are more than welcome. Sign up under the Bless You are Here sign to reserve your place, or just come the day of the event. Young and old are welcome to participate. Child care will be provided. One does not need to be a whiz at trivia. This event is just for fun. Come join us. You'll be glad you did. CHALLENGE: Are you pressed for time but looking for a quick way to be helpful here at church? SOLUTION: Seize the opportunity to provide snacks and make coffee after one of the 8:00 church services. Get others to help you and the task becomes even easier! We ll assist you if you ve never made the church coffee before or need information on what snacks to provide. You can choose a Sunday that works best for you. Just contact Sharon Hintze at /d.hintze@mchsi.com or Pam Wilson at / markpamwilson@msn.com. We need your help! If no one signs up on the available dates, we won t be able to have coffee and snacks. The Coffee/Snack Committee

Barbara Barrows Director of Marketing & Development Iowa City Hospice Adding Life to Each Day office: fax: Building Healthy Families: Depression is associated with many things, but a weak faith is not one of them. Martin Luther himself struggled with depression as did many of our other church leaders. If you are feeling depressed, don t suffer alone. Luther had the right idea 500 years ago when he said, Solitude produces melancholy. When we are alone the worst and saddest things come to mind. We reflect in detail upon all sorts of evils. And if we have encountered adversity in our lives, we dwell upon it as much as possible, magnify it, think that no one is so unhappy as we are, and imagine the worse possible consequences. Talk to an LFS counselor, or someone you trust. They are built of blocks of snow in a circular form in which the walls curve inward toward the top to form a snow vault in which the arched ceiling is selfsupporting. A skilled igloo maker can build one in 30 minutes. The Inuit, better known to many as Eskimos, invented the igloo centuries ago. The best snow to use is wind packed snow. Some igloos can have windows built from a block of ice. An igloo could be any size, but normally, they are built just big enough for the family. A properly built igloo can withstand hurricane force wind on the open snow. YouTube Video in Class We will be watching this video in class on how a young boy and his father make their igloo.
