1 The Parish Beacon Volume 39 No. 10 November 2018 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ Yesterday, Vicar and I were visiting with a shut-in member. I came to serve communion, but I always spend time getting caught up. As we visited I would ask questions open ended questions and would receive simple answers, and it wasn t long and silence filled the air. All of the conventional conversations weather, health, etc. were gone. So I told Vicar more about who we were visiting, and an old memory popped into my mind. I was visiting this member many years ago at Mercy Hospital. They were lying in a hospital bed and I was talking with her. Out of the blue she said, You have the nicest teeth. Looking up and listening, she noticed my teeth. I have never really thought I have nice teeth, although I never needed braces, I have taken good care of them, go decades without cavities, but they are not Hollywood white if you know what I mean. That day she made me feel good by sharing that simple compliment, and in that darkened nursing home room I shared that memory with her. She didn t remember it, but I told how good it made me feel. God uses people like us to impact one another and the world. None of us is worthy to be used by God, but He wants to use us. God uses imperfect and unlikely people. His grace is greater than our sin. In Scripture, we find many unusual choices of people God used to fulfill His plans. He called Moses, who had killed an Egyptian, to lead His people from bondage. He chose David, who was a shepherd boy, to become a king. Most of the disciples that Jesus called were merely fishermen. He called ordinary people to do extraordinary things and he also calls ordinary people to do ordinary things. Are you ready to be used by God in ordinary and extraordinary ways? God wants us to have the attitude of Isaiah who said, Here am I! Send me. (Isaiah 6:8). When God calls, our lives are in His hands. We are equipped by His grace and embrace His mission on earth. He wants us to be totally committed and available. We are to use more than our money and our prayers. God wants us to be His vehicles and channels through which He works. May each of us ask the question, What can I do for my church and for God that will make a difference in the lives of others? God will show you opportunities for service. God bless, Pastor Hartwig OUR REDEEMER LUTHERAN CHURCH AND PRESCHOOL 2301 East Court Street Iowa City, IA Phone: redeemer@ourredeemer.org 1

5 Stephen Ministry Submitted by Marcia Hulse We care, Christ cures. On Saturday, September 29 Our Redeemer Lutheran Church hosted a regional Stephen Ministry Introductory Workshop. Our Redeemer was selected for this honor because of our strong support of the Stephen Ministry program and our location in a medium sized city. The workshop attracted over 50 participants representing nine congregations from three different states. Recently Our Redeemer received a letter of sincere thanks from Stephen Ministry St. Louis, for hosting this workshop. Your efforts were a real blessing to others. You made it possible for people from other congregations to gain practical caregiving skills, to learn more about the Stephen Series, and to return home with a vision for caring ministry. More than 13,000 congregations have enrolled in the Stephen Series and trained over 600,000 Stephen Ministers. One of the biggest reasons for this is that congregations like yours are excited to tell others about this ministry to bear witness to the work of God in their midst. The end result is that the love of God in Christ Jesus is extended to countless people in crisis each year. Our Redeemer has been part of this group since attending this same workshop in Would you like to be part of this group? Our next training class begins after the first of the year. 6 Erica Davisson, Committee Chair WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ENTEROVIRUS D68 Every year, millions of children in the United States catch enteroviruses that can cause coughing, sneezing, and fever. These viruses most often spread in the summer and fall. Enterovirus D68 is one of many enteroviruses that can make people sick. Take basic steps to protect your child and others. Infants, children, and teenagers are at higher risk than adults for getting infected and sick with enteroviruses like enterovirus D68 (EV-D68). That s because they may not have been exposed to these types of viruses before, and they may not yet have immunity (protection) built up to fight the disease. If your child has asthma, he or she may be at greater risk for severe respiratory illness from EV-D68. In August 2014, a couple of states started seeing more children in hospitals with severe respiratory illness caused by EV-D68. In the months following this discovery, CDC and states did more testing and found that EV-D68 was making people sick in almost all states. Most of the cases were among children, many who had asthma or a history of wheezing. EV-D68 is not new, but activity varies from year to year. Better lab testing has led to easier detection of EV-D68. Know the Symptoms of EV-D68 EV-D68 can cause mild to severe respiratory illness. Mild symptoms may include: fever runny nose sneezing cough body and muscle aches Severe symptoms may include: wheezing difficulty breathing Call your child s doctor if he or she is having difficulty breathing, if you feel you are unable to control symptoms, or if symptoms are getting worse. Your child may need to be hospitalized if he or she develops severe illness. Help Protect Your Family from EV-D68 To help avoid catching and spreading EV-D68, parents and children should always follow these basic steps to stay healthy: 6

7 Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Washing hands correctly is the most important thing you can do to stay healthy. Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Avoid close contact, such as kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or eating utensils, with people who are sick. Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or shirt sleeve, not your hands. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick. Stay home when you are sick and keep sick children out of school. EV-D68 Treatment There is no specific treatment for EV-D68. Talk to your child s doctor about the best way to control his or her symptoms. If Your Child Has Asthma Children with asthma are particularly at risk for severe symptoms from EV-D68 infection. Children with asthma are particularly at risk for severe symptoms from EV-D68 infection. If your child has asthma, take some steps to prepare in case he or she catches EV-D68. CDC recommends you do the following to help maintain control of your child s asthma during enterovirus season, which occurs each year in the U.S. during summer and fall: Discuss and update your child s asthma action plan with his or her doctor. Make sure your child takes his or her prescribed asthma medications as directed, especially long-term control medication(s). Make sure your child knows to keep asthma reliever medication with him or her or has access to it at all times. Get your child a flu vaccine, since flu and other respiratory infections can trigger an asthma attack. Follow your child s asthma action plan and call your child s doctor if he or she is having difficulty breathing, unable to control symptoms, or if symptoms are getting worse. Make sure caregiver(s) and/or teacher(s) are aware of the child s condition, and that they know how to help if the child experiences any symptoms related to asthma. 9 Gary Thies shared a mission update in every service and spoke further during the Bible study time, stressing that each individual is called to take action as a follower of Christ. That is how Gary started Mission Central in Mapleton, Iowa. Mission Central is the largest mission supporting agency as a part of LCMS World Mission global Gospel outreach. It has been blessed by God to be the conduit helping to raise millions of dollars every year to send and keep missionaries in the mission field. The Lord has provided this place for missionaries to stay when on home service, offices where some of the 98 volunteers work to support their missionaries, facilities for mission events and worship space for more than 300. A new addition in 2017 includes a creation theater. Meet Edgar Allan Crow (named by Vicar Otterman and Kevin Sellers). He has become somewhat of a phenomenon as he repeatedly pecks at and flies into both the board room windows and the ones over the main doors. He has been doing this over a period of several weeks. 10 Opening large group welcome and song session With the goal of helping other congregations most effectively use their God-given gifts to the fullest, Christ Lutheran Church in Phoenix, Arizona, started the Best Practices for Ministry Conference. The conference was presented free of charge to all who attended. Special designated funds covered travel, housing, and a few meals. Participants were greeted with warm hospitality, great speakers, and practical workshops. Two years ago, Carmel Lutheran (now Cornerstone Lutheran) brought the concept of the conference to Indiana to make it more easily accessible to more congregations "in the Heartland". St. Peter's Lutheran in Columbus assumed the leadership of the Best Practices for Ministry: Heartland conference for 2018 on October Our Redeemer took several staff members: Pastor Hartwig Vicar Otterman Kara Hartwig, Youth Coordinator Denise Holida, Adult Coordinator Marnie Schrader, Children s Coordinator Kevin Sellers, Director of Technology Laurel Sellers, Office Coordinator and Myrl Holida, congregational vice-president, to this conference where workshops were offered relevant to each area. Two Keynotes, five breakout sessions, an exhibit hall, and Classical Worship filled the days. Bloomington, IN being directly in line with the route home, the roaming Hawkeyes delayed departure for a little tailgating and Hawkeye cheering on Saturday, October 13. They were joined by Denny Schrader. Exhibitors in the gym Prayer Garden One of many practical breakout workshops An area was set aside to mingle 10 East Fork White River in Columbus, IN

11 October 24, 2018 Grace to you and peace from God, our Father, and from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Thank you. Your generous prayers and support during my seminary adventure have been a true blessing to my family and myself. Please continue to pray for us as we step closer and closer to entering the full -time ministry. I ve completed my first quarter back at seminary and I m onto my second quarter of academics. In between the seminary placed what they call reading week to allow for professors to assign larger papers or reading assignments. However, since I started under the old curriculum and they are transitioning us into the new curriculum, I didn t have any classes that went the whole semester. This meant that I didn t have any commitments during reading week. To celebrate, my wife, Hope, decided to take a vacation with her Mom and sister to Colorado Springs. She s been planning this vacation for over a year and finally got to enjoy some time away from kids while I played Daddy taxi. Hope enjoyed afternoon tea at Glen Eyrie Castle, went on several architectural and historical tours, and stayed at a nice resort and a historic Bed and Breakfast. The whole trip took 5 days and got her home just in time to go on a family camping trip to Johnson s Shut-ins State Park in southern Missouri. For our camping trip, we spent two nights and 24 hours of rain, toughing it out, as a family. The first night was in the upper 30 s and Hope and the kids were pretty cold, but the second night was in the lower 50 s and everyone was much more comfortable. Being the heater that I am, I was warm both nights, but still got little sleep thanks to Levi and Isaac waking up multiple times. On Friday afternoon we went on a hike along the shut-ins a place where the river runs through some really neat rock cliffs, boulders, and other channels. During the summer this is a favorite swimming spot for a lot of people. However, instead of swimming, we did a short two-mile (two hour) hike. The kids did great and the adults are still sore a week later. What an adventure! As I begin my classes on the Gospel of John, Sermon Structures, and Practical Theology; I am excited to see everything coming together and getting closer to call day. The kids have all been enjoying their activities of school and extracurriculars. While Hope is still enjoying playing bells and flute at church. It is amazing how God has worked in our lives to bring so many different things together to prepare us for His work. Thanks be to God! If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:31 32). Your Servant in Christ, 11 Luke Scheele 355 Brackleigh Ln. 12 Dear Partners in Christ, Not long ago, several of my Grandkids and I had the great joy of finding a durdle slowly making his way through the forest under his patterned shell. Remarkably, we saw him three times over several days. He never made much progress, but enough that it was thrilling for the kids to find him in his new hiding spot each time. Since those enchanting days, we tried to locate the durdle, again, but sadly, it has not happened. I can t say I really know what a turtle feels, but I related to him, nonetheless, as I traveled about the US, toting my essentials with me. Slow moving, not making much visible progress thru the entanglements of getting back to Papua New Guinea; yet, safe, and never in the same place. I had shelter and protection along the journey and here s a difference from the turtle not because of what I hauled along, but because of the homes you opened to me. I might not have had my own address, but wherever I was has been home. Not just a home for food and shelter, but for friendship and love. THANK YOU to all of you who offered the gift of home to me. And, thanks be to God -- my Roaming Days may be done! I have a visa to return to Papua New Guinea! I look forward to working side by side with my LCMS and PNG colleagues and not just from a distance. I confess, I am also quite eager to unpack my suitcase for a spell. In the past months, I ve helped to clear several flats in Hong Kong and empty our mother s house in Virginia (which sold this week!). It seems time to put a few things back into place. Being in PNG won t automatically be easy. The Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one. I have experienced God s faithfulness while in the US. That faithfulness will continue. And I know God will strengthen me all of us and protect us from sin and evil which seek to ensnare us. + Please pray that my return to PNG will be a blessing that healthy relationships will be forged and ministry will flourish to the glory of God that people will know Christ as their Savior more dearly because of our mutual service that any potential opposition will dissipate before it is even known Papua New Guinea recently held a National Day of Repentance. Our LCMS mission team and leaders of the Gutnius Lutheran Church respected the day and sponsored an event to gather and call people to Christ, in repentance. + Please pray for the nation of Papua New Guinea that leaders will work for the well-being of the nation and not other interests that civil authorities would act diligently and with justice so citizens do not take matters into their own hands to protect themselves or pay back injustice. Pray that repentance is not merely a public show, but a turning of the heart aw ay from sin and by the power of the Holy Spirit, turning to Christ in faith. During the National Day of Repentance event, our mission team dedicated and distributed a small booklet called, Against False Sanguma Beliefs. The inhumane torture of those accused of sanguma a belief that a person has used sorcery or witchcraft to cause the death of someone continues unabated in Papua New Guinea. The statement was prepared by our team to clearly state that the beliefs surrounding sanguma are false and the violence perpetrated on those accused of sanguma is criminal. In it, we point to our Triune God who controls life and death. He is the One who protects, provides for our needs, and calms our fears. In Christ, we know love and are forgiven, and by the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to love others as we are loved by Christ. + We pray that the statement on sanguma will guide members of the Gutnius Lutheran Church and other Christians to think clearly about Who God is, in the face of sanguma. Pray that accusations and torture will cease that Christ s love will be evident in our acts towards others and that His forgiveness will mark our relationships with others. + With thanks to God the incredible gift of family and friends with grateful thanks to God for those of you who faithfully support the work I do in His name thru the Lutheran Church Office of International Mission. May God strengthen and protect you. With His peace, Julie Lutz Julie Lutz with The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Office of International Mission Papua New Guinea 12

13 Wordsearch 268, Solution page 15 BIBLEWORDGAMES Used with Permission I want to thank you all for supporting me and my family with your generous encouragements and gifts. Being a vicar and training for the ministry is a process that can, more often than not, be filled with anxiety. The care of souls is a heavy task that cannot be gone into lightly, and it would certainly be overwhelming without the support of the members of the church. I feel incredibly blessed to be here at Our Redeemer, where I do receive the continual encouragement of such a loving congregation, which strengthens me to learn and grow in the pastoral ministry. Thank you for supporting me, and thank you for supporting my family as they follow me along on this crazy, but wonderful journey. God s Blessings, Vicar Otterman I wanted to take this opportunity to Thank You for your generous expression of love and support for my ministry and my family this past week in the many Pastor Appreciation notes and cards. Many of you gave examples of how the Lord has blessed you and there is no doubt I feel blessed to be here at Our Redeemer. As I watch Vicar Otterman go through his Vicarage, I reminisce and remember my Vicarage here 10 years ago. In the time since, I have been able to journey with many of you through major life milestones births, baptisms, confirmation, weddings, retirements, anniversaries, and funerals. I thank you for sharing your life with me and sharing your kinds notes and gifts. May the good Lord continue to equip us as disciples so that we can make disciples for Jesus. God bless, Pastor 13

14 Blessings of Loving Someone with Special Needs In the Fall issue of Life Date published by the Lutherans for Life, Michael Salemink, Executive Director of Lutherans for Life, wrote an interesting article illustrating some of the blessings of loving someone with special needs. When looking at this topic with eyes of faith, love and compassion, God reflects Himself in interesting ways through individuals with special needs. 1. They prove that God sustains. Persons with disabilities enjoy their lives and appreciate life s opportunities and gifts as God sustains them. 2. They embody Grace. No matter what type of disability a person has, God gives them Grace with which they live their lives. 3. They model community. Learning how to depend upon others when we cannot do some things ourselves reflects how we depend on God the Father and within our congregation of faith, we find community. 4. They invite servanthood. We are by the very nature of disabilities present, being invited by others to love and to serve outside ourselves. 5. They underscore the promises of Paradise. When people struggle with brokenness of some sort, it highlights the comfort that comes with our hope of resurrection to eternal life with God. During 35 years of Professional Portrait photography I have seen many touching moments within families that were startling intimate. I have worked in our studio with families who sang worship songs to their quadriplegic sibling to bring a smile to her face just as I tripped the shutter. I will forever remember a father who brought his 13 year old, quadriplegic daughter for her portrait session. He carried her in his arms, out of the wheel chair to pose her, held her steady until the moment I captured just the right image for them. Mothers brought their autistic child to have portraits taken and we did that despite the child pulling the Mother s hair viciously between takes. I have been fortunate to have seen and been part of the love of Christ reflected by parents and families to their children with disabilities. God creates and Values every life. Jesus loves me, this I know; for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong; we are weak, but He is strong. 14
