CONFESSION Private confession is available on Saturdays before a Sunday with Communion as a preparation for the Sacrament on those Saturdays between 1 and 2 pm or by request; just contact Pastor Long for an appointment. OFFICE HOURS Pastor Long is generally available at Mt. Calvary Tuesday through Friday mornings, or by appointment should you need or want to have conversation with him. HOSPITAL CALLS If you or a loved one have an illness or hospitalization that needs to be brought to the attention of Pastor Long, please call the office as soon as possible so that he may visit you. Note: Be sure the hospital knows that you are a member of Mt. Calvary and that you wish to have Pastor Long visit you. However, the hospitals do not always call the church it is best if you let the office know. You can call the office during the week ( ) or see Pastor Long or the elder for the day on Sundays if you are interested in using one. WEEKLY STEWARDSHIP UPDATE Our offering for the General Fund for July 30, 2017, was $2, Our weekly need for 2017 is $7, We started this fiscal year with a clean slate in terms of expenses vs. income. But we d still like to make up some of the ground we lost last year so please continue to give as generously as your means allow. WOMEN OF MT. CALVARY ARE COLLECTING MITE BOXES TODAY. 1 DEO GRATIAS (Thanks be to God) And thank you! Because of the generosity of many over the past two months, the extra needs of our Concordia families have been met for the school year! There s even $1,635 to spare! So on behalf of the families with the need for extra help, Thank you. And please remember, you can donate to the fund at any time in order to build up the reserves for next year s needs. CANCELLATIONS Remember, all midweek Bible Studies and the Thursday Evening Divine services are cancelled until week of August 13 th.

2 SPECIAL CHOIR REHEARSALS In order to prepare special music for the dedication service on Sunday, August 20 th, both the bell and adult choirs will rehearse on Thursdays, August 10 th and August 17 th at their regular times bell choir, 6:45 and adult choir (& Anchormen), 7:45 pm. We also invite anyone who would like to join us for this one time worship service to attend our rehearsals and sing with us. Who knows, you might like us enough to come back again. If you have any questions, or cannot make the rehearsals, call Bruce at BLESSING OF CONCORDIA AT BEGINNING OF NEW SCHOOL YEAR Next Sunday, August 13 th, in both services, Bibles will be given to our 2 nd grade students. Also during those services there will be a Rite of Blessing for Concordia Lutheran School, our board members, staff and faculty, students and parents. We encourage you to join us SAVE THE DATE The Dedication of the renovated Sanctuary will be August 20th. President Miller of the Central Illinois District will be here to preach, and we ll have a single service that morning at 9:00 am, followed by a brunchy reception and fellowship. YOUTHFUL MINDS Deaconess Gillian is back today, August 6 th and will be taking you all out to lunch at Jalapenos in Metro Center. So, invite a friend or two, and join her. Remember, this is open to all high school graduates, college students and beyond. Would like to see you before you head off to school or wherever life is taking you. We plan to meet around 12:30 pm. Watch the News & Announcements, your , & mailbox for details as the date gets closer. MEN S BIBLE STUDY TO BEGIN NEW TOPIC -- Galatians: Join us as we sprint through Paul s Letter to the Galatians. Ever wonder where Lutherans came up with all this Law-Gospel stuff, or wonder why we re so insistent that justification by faith is absolutely essential for a proper understanding of Christ and His work? It s all here. Turns out St. Paul was a Lutheran.We meet at the IHOP on Big Hollow Rd. (across from Target), Wednesdays at 6:30 am. (On hiatus until August 16 th ) FOOD PANTRY NEEDS During August our pantry will be in need of Mac & Cheese, Dried Beans, Manwich, and Baking Mixes. If you can help out by bringing some, your donation can be placed in the baskets in either the Narthex or the Parish Hall or on the table in the Pantry room and will be greatly appreciated. Help Our Food Pantry Schnuck s has chosen the Mt. Calvary Food Pantry as the August recipient of the Schnucks Bags 4 My Cause program featuring the "Hunger" Bag! (A Hunger Bag is a reusable shopping bag, which if used replaces eight disposable bags!) For every "Hunger" Bag sold during the month of August at the 4800 N. University location, our pantry will receive a $1 donation! REFORMATION BULLETIN BOARD Check out the mini-bulletin board in the parish hall titled, Tidbits of the Reformation. The 500 th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation will be October 31, Each week features a Luther quote based on the Three-Year Lectionary, the Reformation timeline, along with symbols, people, or Luther s hymns. So, remember each Sunday to stop by and check it out! Tidbits of the Reformation for Aug. 6 features a Luther quote for 9th Sunday after Pentecost, timeline date , and notable person, Thomas Müntzer. It is located on the table in the parish hall. FROM WOMEN OF MT. CALVARY Treats for Family House Family House offers a home away from home for the families of patients receiving medical treatment in Peoria. Women of Mt. Calvary have signed up to sponsor treats on the 4 th Monday of each month. These treats may be store bought or homemade, and do not have to be individually wrapped. Family House is also in need of laundry detergent and cleaning supplies. If you would like to donate, please sign the sheet on the bulletin board across from Pastor s office and bring your treats to church, leaving them in the kitchen marked Family House. Questions? Call LaVelle Borders, Postage Stamps The Women of Mt. Calvary are saving postage stamps for LWML. Please cut out your postage stamps from envelopes and place them in the striped box on the table in the parish hall. We will trim the stamps and send them to LWML to support their mission work. 3 Downstairs Nursery Staffing Women of Mt. Calvary are organizing the staffing of the downstairs nursery during the 10:45 am service. Anyone who would like to help staff the nursery (we need two people per Sunday) please sign up on the sheet on the bulletin board across from Pastor s office Sign-Up sheets are up through September. FROM CONCORDIA Assistant Volleyball Coaching Opportunity -- The Concordia Lutheran School Athletic Program is seeking volunteer assistant coaches to help during the 2017 Volleyball season. Concordia has a 5th and 6th grade and 7th and 8th grade volleyball team and is interested in finding individuals who have a passion for volleyball, enjoy teaching and training athletes all centered in a Christian environment. CALVARY CORE VALUES A booklet entitled Core Values was put in the mailboxes for each active, confirmed member of the congregation. The Board of Long Range Planning and the Administrative Council ask that you prayerfully consider how you might help the congregation advance these values. A response form is included in the booklet, and if you fill yours out you may leave it in the box in the fellowship hall, or drop it by the office. Thank You EARLY WARNING Our Property Board has scheduled a second Summer Work Day for September 16 th. At an earlier work day there was a lot of yard work that didn t get done. Therefore, they are planning to weed the beds (some of our ladies have been working to get things looking good for the dedication) and spread mulch. They also have a tree to take down and want to 3 work on the sign. So they need your help and lots of it. If you can t help on September 16 th, talk to Josh Joseph and see what you can do before or after that date. ISSUES ETC. PREMIER CONFERENCE FOR LUTHERAN LAITY -- You re invited to attend the Issues, Etc. Making the Case Conference November 10 and 11 at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, TX. INTERNET INFORMATION We re still actively collecting the addresses of members so that we can start communicating electronically. The long-term goal for this is three-fold. First, we d like to be able to get specific information of interest to particular people in the congregation rather than having folks wade through all the news and announcements (e.g. target an note to council members for upcoming meeting, target Sunday School families for updates on Sunday School happenings, and so forth). Second, we d like to be able to get time sensitive information out to all members quickly (e.g. closings or cancellations during bad weather, deaths in the congregation, or other items that everyone should have access to quickly). And finally, we d like to be able to reduce some of the paper communication we ve been doing as a way to economize. So, please help us! As I have noted in announcements, this is for internal use 4 only, and will not be published or shared (unless you want it published in the directory). Facebook: As we continue to look for ways to connect with folks outside the congregation, there is reason to believe that Facebook is still an effective tool. We have updated the Mt. Lutheran Hillside Village is hosting its annual Benevolent Care Brunch Extraordinaire on Sat., Oct. 7 from 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. New for 2017 we are featuring an all-you-can-eat upscale brunch buffet complete with personal chefs carving Illinois smoked hams and creating your favorite omelets right before your eyes! Come and enjoy a little of this or a little of that from this bountiful buffet prepared by our world class culinary team. The cost is $50 per person. Proceeds will benefit the Lutheran Hillside Village Benevolent Fund to support care center (nursing) residents who outlive their resources. Reservation forms will be available late August. A ONE DAY INSTITUTE ON REFORMATION REVERBERATIONS : -- The Lasting Impact of Martin Luther's Reforms" will be held on Saturday, September 9 from 9 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. This institute will be led by Dr. Erik Herrmann, Director of the Center for Reformation Research and chairman of the Department of Historical Theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. As we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation join us as we begin with the 95 Theses. Martin Luther's religious reforms have had tremendous and lasting effects upon the Western world, both in the church and in other secular arenas. This institute will examine the long term effects of Luther's influence in three areas: religion, politics, and society. The cost of $20 will include a noon meal. Therefore there will be no Thursday Divine Service this week, August 10 th. Thursday Divine Services will resume on August 17 th. If you are in need of pastoral care during the time he is away, please call the church office ( ) during office hours, or one of the elders, and a pastor will be located for you. Pastor Mark Drews will be preaching and leading the Bible Study hour while Pastor Long is away. Pr. Mark Drews has spent 25 years in ministry, 11 as a school teacher, and the last 14 as a pastor. He comes to us from North Dakota where he just finished some vacancy work. His wife of 16 years, Melanie, has just been called to serve as a kindergarten teacher at Bethel Lutheran School in Morton. they are blessed with three daughters, and he reports they are all Packer fans. Pr. Drews is actually returning to the Central Illinois District, as prior to his service in North Dakota, he served for four years at Zion in Mt. Pulaski. We are grateful to have Pr. Drews with us especially since he and his family are still unpacking boxes from their move back to our area. 5

Calvary+ Sunday: YOUTH: Summer Sunday School -- While Pastor s class will continue on Sunday mornings through the Summer, with construction and the summer schedules of our valiant, but tired, staff, the Board of Education has decided to go on break with the pre-k through Jr. High classes. We ll be off June, July, and August, and start up with classes the week after the Labor Day, September 3 rd. Adults: Adult Class Today the Rev. Mark Drews will be leading our Bible Study hour. Thursday: Afternoon Bible Study: Leviticus: (On hiatus until August 17 th ) Far from being a handbook for priests or manual on holiness, the book of Leviticus gives a powerful witness to how the Holy God gives His people access to His grace and blessing.
