1 May 2018 Vol. 23 No. 5 Connections A Publication of Calvary Baptist Church NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER Thursday, May 3, 2018 The 67 th annual observance of the National Day of Prayer will take place on Thursday, May 3. Millions of people will unite in prayer at thousands of events from coast to coast. Serve the City will sponsor a community prayer gathering led by area pastors and other Christian leaders from noon to 1:00 on May s Island (50 2 nd Avenue Bridge, Cedar Rapids). The theme for 2018 is Pray for America Unity. It is based on Ephesians 4:3, which challenges believers to mobilize unified public prayer for America, Making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Scripture tells us that our fervent prayer is effective and that our loving God responds to His children s earnest pleas in mighty ways that avail much. Mark Mittelberg, one of the featured speakers at the conference, will help you develop spiritual strength through his book Confident Faith: Building a Firm Foundation for Your Beliefs. After helping you deepen your understanding of the concepts of faith and truth, he offers reasons from science, logic, history, archaeology, experience, and facts about the Bible that will bolster your confidence in the claims of Christianity. He also looks at barriers to belief, issues that can keep us or others from trusting Jesus Christ. Another book from Mittelberg is The Questions Christians Hope No One Will Ask (with Answers). Through a national poll conducted by the Barna Research, he uncovered the questions Christians most fear being asked. Then with this book he provided solid answers to help us respond to the real questions people are asking, equipping us to meet today s hotbutton issues head on. Read this book to increase your skill in sharing your faith with others. Check out these and many other helpful resources in our church library!
