6 From the Chase the Lion! I m reading the book, Chase the Lion, by pastor and author, Mark Batterson. The subtopic rightly sums up the gist of his message: If Your Dream Doesn t Scare You, It s Too Small! How good it is for an aging pastor/preacher like me to read and hear about dreams that scare the dickens out of you! Here is an example from this 40+ something pastor: We start dying the day we stop dreaming and, ironically, we start living the day we discover a dream worth dying for. My question for me and for us at Wesley is: Do we still dream dreams for our church or have we packed it in? This has been a remarkable summer for our youth (middle and high school) and for our dual Minister of Music and Youth, Joe Clark. Joe has had little or no down time and has served faithfully our community, our conference, and of course, our church. Youth have been on mission, in Methodist and other camps, and have faithfully served this past week as helpers, crew leaders, and assistants for our Vacation Bible School. Under the very capable and energetic leadership of our Children s Minister, Marieke dewitte, we switched from a morning VBS to an evening VBS and also from the first week in August to the last week in July. It has been a good change starting with a meal for all followed by an exciting and upbeat music/skits/bible lessons/games/crafts and even snacks. We have had almost as many adults working as children attending and that has made our VBS a very pleasant, learning experience for all. As an old African proverb goes: It takes a village to raise a child, so it takes a church to train a child in the Christian faith. As Pastor, a HUGE thank you! to all-youth and adults-who ve made VBS, and the whole summer, a great place to work and serve as growing disciples at Wesley UMC! Now--back to Chase the Lion. I challenged each of us to dream dreams to build a stronger, loving and serving Wesley UMC. There is no bad dream or idea. For example, could we put together a group of folk to dream about how we can teach our youth specific trades, how to interview for a job, or the importance of volunteerism in their church and community? Can some of our senior adults adopt some of our children and youth and become a mentor or big brother or sister? Or, have most of us just packed it in? You will find the idea of Chasing the Lion in II Samuel 23:20: There was also Benaish, son of Jehoiada, a valiant warrior from Kabzeel. He did many heroic deeds, which included killing two champions of Moab (Israel s arch-enemy). Another time, on a snowy day, he chased a lion down into a pit and killed it. How would you feel suddenly being surprised on a snowy day by a 500 pound lion who is looking for dinner (you)? But get this: Instead of running away from that lion, Benaiah ran after the lion and then the lion feel into a pit. Now most of us would breath a sign of relief that the lion had trapped itself in a pit and be done with it! But not this fierce warrior. Instead he took a running start, jumped down in the pit with his spear, and hilled it. Now that takes courage! The lesson: Instead of letting our fears rule our emotions, may be summon up the courage, with God s help, to face our fears and dream our dreams. Kingdom work depends on God s strength and not our strength. So, with God s help, FEAR NOT AND DREAM ON, Wesley folk! As we learned again in VBS, God is with us! WOW, GOD! PRAYERS AND CONCERNS Rev.
