Visual Arts This Sunday As we move toward the Lenten Season: Many years ago, when in graduate school and studying art education, I created this work, which reflects my background appreciation for quilts. The black circle represents my life, which has taken me in many directions as seen in the brown star and the background, which reflects the bright times, the ordinary times, and the more stressful times of life. Goshen College Parables Parables, a worship ensemble from Goshen College, combines music, original drama, and personal stories to create an engaging worship experience designed to inspire, comfort, and challenge. The program for is developed by the eight student members, with direction and leadership from Debra Detwiler and administrative support from Dan Koop Liechty and Marcia Yost. Student members include: Rebecca Choi, Aidan Friesen, Julian Harnish, Yejin Kim, Lauren Myers, Matthew Smucker, Sharada Weaver, and Jonah Yoder. Office Hours Phil Pastor Phil Waite will keep hours at Goshen College Java Junction from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Feb. 22, for anyone who wants to stop by and visit. All are welcome. Health Updates Richard Hostetler underwent surgery on Feb. 13 at Goshen Hospital for a broken elbow. He will be recovering further and undergoing rehab at Greencroft Healthcare. Betty Hochstetler underwent shoulder surgery at Elkhart General Hospital on Feb. 12. She is now recovering at home. CMC Death Kent Gunden, brother/brother-in-law of Sher and Del King, died on Feb. 8 at Goshen Hospital. His memorial service was held here at CMC on Friday, Feb

6 Thank You Dear CMC, In the months since Adrian was born, we have experienced more support from all of you than we could have anticipated! We have received cards, gifts, meals, visits, words of encouragement, and excellent care for Adrian in the crib room. There is no doubt that we have felt your love. Thanks, Dick Oyer $5,000 for Feeding the Multitudes at CMC College students are coming to our fellowship hall every Wednesday evening. Jesus said, Give them something to eat. We reply, There are so many, and we have far exceeded our budget for this ministry. Jesus replied, "Bring me $5 and 2 coins." Then he ordered us all to sit down. Taking the $5 and 2 coins, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the $5, and gave it to the crowds. All ate and were filled. Now it is time to collect the leftovers so that we can fill 12 baskets with $5 bills. Please give your leftovers so that our Wednesday night activity fund can be replenished. (inspired by Matthew 14:13-21). Men s Fellowship: Gordon Yoder On Wednesday, Feb. 21, Gordon Yoder, will present Faith/Life Story. 7 Mennonite Mission Network Appreciation Thank you, College Mennonite Church, for giving $6,800 to Mennonite Mission Network in 2017! Your donations, prayers, and enthusiastic participation play a vital role in our global church. Together, we were able to share a message of hope in a broken world. Karla Minter GRID Volunteers Needed Center for Healing and Hope is looking for additional volunteers to help with Goshen Resident ID (GRID) card registration sessions. Spanish language skills are not required. If interested, contact the Center for Healing and Hope at or at hope@cchclinics.org. The Mennonite Subscription Renewals Due The church office is collecting renewals and new subscriptions to The Mennonite. A renewal form will be in your literature box on Sunday, Feb. 25. Stop by the church office on Sunday mornings, March 4 or 11, to sign up and make your payment. Or deliver your payment to the church office during weekday office hours by Thursday, March 15. Checks for $35 must be made out to College Mennonite Church and designated for The Mennonite. Do not include your payment in your offering envelope. Stop by the office with your check as soon as possible if you wish to subscribe this year. Feb. 6 Church Board Meeting The Board spent much time considering feedback received from the Jan. 28 congregational discussion and from the recent survey on Spanishspeaking ministry. We hope to have a proposal to the congregation in early March for how CMC might invest new ministry resources pledged as part of the current Vision Campaign in ways that further CMC s strategic priorities. The Board also received recommendations from the Bylaws Review Committee (John Yordy, Lovina Rutt, and George Smucker). Having now completed its work, the committee joined the board for discussion and review of its report. The Board is deeply grateful for the committee's good work and plans to bring bylaws recommendations for congregational consideration later this spring. There were reports and updates on various other matters, including authorizing CMC s participation in an Amity solar installation (50/50 with GC) on the Rec-Fitness roof. Exhibit Opening Reception Voices of Conscience: Peace Witness in the Great War, Sunday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m. in the Goshen College Library basement gallery. This traveling exhibit, prepared by the Kauffman Museum (North Newton, Kans.), lifts up the prophetic insights and the personal courage of World War I peace protesters and suggests parallels to the culture of war and violence in our world today. The exhibit runs Feb. 16-April 8. 7

This musical is about ordinary people and their jobs: the trucker, the teacher, the delivery boy, the retiree, and many others get a voice and a song. While Stephen Schwartz created the show, there are musical contributions by many artists, including James Taylor and Lin Manuel-Miranda, making the music style varied and vibrant. Tickets are $9 for adults and $7 for students. You may purchase tickets online beginning Feb. 12 at bethanycs.net/tickets. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
