1 The Olive Branch April 2012 Published Monthly Volume 8 Issue Tieton Drive Yakima, WA (509) Web Address: mountoliveyakima.org Info4me@qwestoffice.net Interim Pastor Craig Patterson Sunday Worship 8:00 A.M. & 10:30 A.M. Sunday School 9:15 A.M. Adult Bible Study 9:15 A.M. THE OLIVE BRANCH April 2011 Published monthly Volume 8 Issue 4 From the Pastor: Be Not Unbelieving, But Believing. (Read John 20:26-29) As people get older they recall the past (the past reality) with phrases like, I ll never forget what it was like, It seems like only yesterday, It s as if I can still smell Mom s cinnamon rolls, Oh, the nation was so frightened and tense back then, I remember the excitement in the stands because I was there I was there Memory takes us from the reality of NOW to the reality of the PAST. Both are real. Just because time has passed, reality has not changed. Reality is still real. How important it is to have eye witnesses to give testimony of what is and what was real. We rely upon people who were there, who saw and experienced the event to inform us of what was. We need witnesses today in order to make record of reality now for the people of the future to know. The devil loves to create doubts in the minds of people, especially, when it comes to the facts, the realities, of Jesus the Messiah s life. One of his tools is the passage of time with which he loves to introduce false stories with which to dim the accuracy of the facts. The facts that God became human (in Christ Jesus), suffered on the cross, bore our sins, and then was raised on the third day are realities that, from the devil s point of view, best be forgotten. Knowing the schemes of the devil, the sinful human flesh, and the enemies of Christ, God took great care in producing a reliable account of the past, especially the reality of Jesus coming in the flesh, dying on the cross to pay for sins, and rising again. When Jesus told Thomas, who doubted Jesus resurrection, to place his fingers in His hands and in His side He was creating a strong eye-witness of the truth of the resurrection. Be not unbelieving, but believing, said Jesus to Thomas. Doubting Thomas became a solid witness of the resurrected Jesus Christ! John, who wrote these words in his gospel, and Peter were, also, eye-witnesses of the reality of Jesus, his life, death, and resurrection. Jesus has risen and He has won forgiveness of sins for us all! Cont d pg. 2 1

2 Cont d from pg. 1 Because these eye-witnesses have spoken, written, and declared the reality of the past, you and I can know for certain. We can remember with the other saints what truly happened. We can tell others today of what God has done in the life, suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Truly, salvation has been secured by Jesus for all people. Now, the word goes out! The reality of Jesus life on earth over 2000 years ago still gives eternal life to people walking the earth today, tomorrow, and in the future! Blessed Easter-tide to you and yours. Pastor Craig A. Patterson FEEDING April 14th Come Join Us For Packaging! 4 LWML RESOURCE CENTER WHATS NEW IN THE RESOURCE CENTER? The book of the month is Joy That Lasts by renowned family counselor, seminar speaker, and author Gary Smalley. Joy That Lasts shows what it means to truly trust God and how a deep relationship with him can bring the life and joy you long for in your marriage. Also in the LWML Resource Center are Easter greeting cards, Easter and other occasion dinner napkins, plus cross-shaped bookmarks. Thank you for your support with recycling the following- lasers, inkjets, cellphones, MP3 players, GPS devices, and digital cameras. These can be put in the box in Resource Center. THE DEMOGRAPHY OF MT OLIVE Plan to attend an important presentation of the demography of Mt Olive on Sunday, April 15 th, 2012, following the 10:30 AM Worship Service and a Potluck Lunch. Demography is the science of vital and social statistics and as we reconsider the ministry priorities of Mt Olive as part of our Transition Process, it is important for us to know the makeup of the people living in our neighborhood. Leading the discussion will be Gene and Susan Olson of the Northwest District office of the Lutheran Church Extension Fund. The Olson's will help us to understand the lifestyles and needs of the people in our neighborhood using state of the art tools to include MissionInsite, an online resource for community population data and trends. The information is of value for each and every member and friend of Mt Olive and not just its leadership. So this is an invitation for You and Your Family members and friends to attend this unique opportunity to get to know our neighborhood better towards the goal of better serving it in the Name of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. For questions, call or contact any member of the Transition Committee or Gary Treece ( or glt528@charter.net) Childcare is getting ready for spring. If anyone would like to help weed the planter boxes or help the children plant a garden, please see Patty or Darcy. The children really enjoy watching their garden grow!!! 4
