1 The Beacon Shines with Grace Lutheran Church News November, 2013 Give a smile, Get one back, Give a hug And see the smile... It s Happening at Grace Lutheran! From the Pastor s Desk Come n Get it! Whenever I sit down for dinner, these words echo through my mind. They are the words of my grandmother, whom some of you met the weekend of my ordination. Whenever we gather at my grandparents house for dinner, this is how my grandma calls us to the table. She s been doing it for as long as I can remember. For her, I m sure it s just something that she s always done, but for us, her grandkids, it holds special meaning. No one says it quite the way she does, and once those words have come out, we know we finally get to dig in to whatever delicious food we ve been smelling all afternoon as it wafts into the living room from the kitchen. It also means that it is time for all of us to come together. She often would call it out because some of us would be downstairs together, while others stayed upstairs. Some would be out at the pond or walking around the backyard, but once those words echoed through the house, we knew it was time for all of us to come back together. It was called to share a meal that was lovingly prepared, as well as a lot of laughter which usually centered around the stories my grandparents would tell. We gathered to the table, which was by no means large, and so often we would be crammed in together, elbow to elbow, as we ate. I, being the youngest, was usually sitting, not on a chair, but on a large stepstool, wedged in between my mom and my middle sister. We all knew our places at the table, we never deviated, even if one of us wasn t there, we didn t take their seats, they still had their place. We all have some sort of memory around family dinners. Maybe they happened often, maybe only around holidays, but regardless when you hear the term, family dinner, some sort of image is conjured in the mind. This is particularly true as we enter into November and Thanksgiving begins speeding towards us. We all have Thanksgiving traditions, whether big or small. It s a time for family, friends, and to share memories, all around a table laden with turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. There is a sacredness to Thanksgiving, for it s a time for us to intentionally stop and give thanks for the lives we are leading, for the people that love us, and for the multitude of ways in which God has blessed us. However, often we don t think about the fact that Thanksgiving should be celebrated by all those we call family, and that includes our church family. We at Grace, are indeed a family. We laugh together, we cry together, we celebrate together, we work together, so why shouldn t we share Thanksgiving together? This year, in lieu of a mid-week Thanksgiving Eve service, we will be joining together for a Thanksgiving potluck dinner. The Sunday evening before Thanksgiving, which is November 24, at 5:00 p.m., all are invited to bring a dish to pass (maybe it s your favorite dish) to share with your family, and come share a meal together in the social hall. We ll crowd around tables and share stories; we ll share what we re thankful for here at Grace; we ll simply be a family together. So bring yourselves, your kids, your loved ones, and come be with your church family as we prepare for Thanksgiving. Wherever you are, wherever you find yourself, hopefully on November 24 you ll hear the words, come n get it! echo across the heavens and bring you to dinner with those who love you. It includes Anna Mae Lauer, Dee Kerr, Germar Rudolf, and Scott Hildebrand. Donations Needed: Welcome Center Furniture Project in Progress Thank you for the first donations to restore the Welcome Center furniture! Keith McCleary and Janet Murphy have been busy working on having the welcome area refurbished. In order to continue this important project, we are counting on more donations from the congregation. Please consider supporting this first impression of the church. There is now an opportunity to make a contribution In Honor Of or In Memory Of a loved one. Contact Keith or Janet with any questions or to make a donation. The written report from Parish Education was reviewed. The council discussed which organization to use for background checks of Sunday School teachers. They decided on the State Police. Eight teens, plus parents, met for Youth Group on September 22. The youth have named themselves the TOGS (Tributes of God). The Stewardship Committee is changing its name to Mission and Discipleship. The committee met on September 16 and October 1. They plan to update records of church members. Their next meeting will be November 12. All committee reports were reviewed and accepted by the council. A job description for the Organist/Music Director is in progress. Organist coverage is filled through November 24. Pastor Tina s Blog Debuts on GraceLutheran.com Pastor Tina s first blog post for Grace Lutheran has been published on our website: com. Her post revolves around the Bible verse of Luke 11.9, (NRSV): So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. Her message ties in the youth group outing to a corn maze and gives us assurance that God is with us, even when we seem to be lost. Keep checking in, because Pastor Tina intends to update her blog weekly or as the Spirit moves her. 2 We Need Your Help Updating Member Records The Mission and Discipleship Committee is in the process of updating the church database, and we need everyone s help to ensure accuracy. Update forms are located where Sunday bulletins can be found. We have also sent out an to all of those who subscribe to The Beacon online. Please pick one up and complete for your family. We are requesting your mailing address and information on each member of your family, including any immediate family members who are deceased. If you have family members living away from home (college, for example), or if you are a snow bird and seek a warmer climate in the winter, please also include your alternate mailing address with an approximate start and stop date. Please return your completed form to Grace via the offering plate, , or the office mailbox in the entrance hallway, or by giving it to a Mission and Discipleship Committee member (Beth Kollosch, Cindy Strobeck, Scott Hildebrand and Carole Wagner. 4 Strangers in Kenya It's been a crazy nine weeks around here, but the school year is off to a riproaring start. The new staff and students seem to be over the worst of homesickness, despite the extra stress and trauma of the Westgate Mall terrorist attack in nearby Nairobi. Last week we had our annual multicultural day--an amazing day of color and celebration over the diverse cultures of our school and the relentless love of God as he reaches into each one. The day was again overseen by Heather herself, and it was bigger and better than ever! We also wrapped up our Spiritual Emphasis Week, and over 100 students made a new commitment to Jesus or re-affirmed their relationship to Him. It was amazing to watch God dig into so many hearts and turn them from their sin and turn them to their loving and glorious Savior. Heather's outreach from September had great results. She and a crew of students artfully painted rooms at a women's prison near our school. Some also received manicures (like a baby daughter of one of the inmates). What a beautiful picture of how God sees each one of as beautiful despite our sin and shame! He redeems us and makes beauty of ashes. One last thing...will you take a moment to pray for the Central African Republic (CAR)? Some details about the terrible and escalating chaos in that country are included here. A few current students and staff lived and worked in CAR in the past, although all had been evacuated long ago. Our family joined in the fasting and prayer for CAR on October 27, but the prayers need to continue until God's glory breaks through. That's it for this quick update! Ryan for Heather, Micah, Asher, and Claire Check out the Bulletin Board Did you know there is a bulletin board beside the elevator doors outside the office hallway? It has lots of information posted, including many events sponsored by other churches and organizations. Check out this board for the monthly calendar as well. Anna Mae posts any flyers she gets there, and there are also notes from parishioners posted as well. 4 Prayer Requests for the Central African Republic The Situation: The Central African Republic (CAR) is in the midst of a political, humanitarian and spiritual crisis. Since March 2013 when a powerful and violent group of rebels, the Seleka, a Muslim backed unity of five rebel factions, overthrew the president and took over the country, CAR has been in chaos and the government essentially nonexistent. Some are describing it as a failed state. Painful stories are forthcoming from the Christians in CAR; stories of widespread looting by the rebels and of religiously targeted abductions and killings. Mixed with those horrific reports are stories of God s miraculous protection and bold declaration of the Gospel message. Prior to the Seleka rebel atrocities, the south and eastern part of CAR were under siege by the Lord s Resistance Army (LRA) since These LRA rebels have attacked villages and towns, capturing men, women and many children, stealing their meager possessions, burning their homes, raping, torturing and killing. Can you Help with the Power of Prayer? Pray for the restoration of order and peace in the country. Pray that religious freedom can be maintained. Christians are suffering greatly at the hands of Muslim terrorists. Pray that the Ugandan and U.S. forces, who have been protecting the eastern end of the country, will continue to do so even though the LRA threat seems to have decreased. Pray for the delivery of essential medicine to our church hospitals. We have been waiting six months for the flight permissions to deliver these medicines and praise to God, permission has just now been received through remarkable answers to prayer and the diligence and persistence of CAR church leaders! 'Tis the Season! For Giving Once again, we will be participating in Red Lion school district's gift giving program. The program is working a little differently this year, and we would like to get a head count of people who would be willing to receive a tag of a child who is in need of gifts this Christmas season. That way we can inform the district how many names we would like. Please speak with Pastor Tina or Ellen Warntz if you are interested in participating in this program.

5 Holiday Offerings Thanksgiving is quickly approaching, and this year our distribution is even earlier occurring on the 11th of November. We still need over one hundred turkeys for our clients so your donations are greatly appreciated. Donated turkeys should be between 8 and 12 pounds, but a turkey breast of this same weight is quite acceptable as well. We will be setting up the sanctuary for the yard sale ministry on Sunday the 10th beginning at noon. Lunch will be provided following traditional service for those who can volunteer to help with this very important ministry. Distribution begins at 9:00 a.m. on the 11th, and all are welcome to come to assist with handing out the boxes, serving our clients in the Welcome Center, or assisting them as they shop at the yard sale. Because of the short turn around between the two holidays, we will be working diligently to re-pack the boxes for the December 16 distribution for Christmas by packing on November 23 and December 7, beginning at 8:30 a.m. We appreciate the generosity of our congregation, for without your gifts of time, talent and money the food pantry would not exist. God has truly blessed us with willing and giving workers! FALL CLEANUP THANKYOU Chairman Jeff Arnold and the entire property committee want to thank all the volunteers who helped with the fall clean-up in October. Their hard work in the yard, cleaning flower beds, trimming trees and removing the damaged trellis from the church front, has made our outward appearance look spectacular to all who pass by. The kitchen sparkles, as the inside workers washed down cupboards, scoured the stove and ovens, and shined up the stainless steel appliances and carts. A special thanks to the members who dusted the entire sanctuary, including the books under the pews, and polished all of the woodwork surrounding the altar. As we welcomed over a hundred visitors for Pastor Tina's installation on the 27th of October, we all felt proud of our church and the volunteers who helped to make it look its very best. Women of Grace are being thankful at their next meeting, November 7 at 6:00 p.m. with a Pot Luck Dinner in the Welcome Center. All are invited. Food assignments were made by your last name: A-G is responsible for Main dishes, H-K Side dishes, L-T Dessert and U-Z Drinks. Final plans for the Holiday Craft Show on November 16 will be discussed. Holiday Craft Bazaar Needs Donations The annual Holiday Craft Bazaar is set to go, and is sponsored by the Graceful Women. It will take place on November 16 from 9:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. The proceeds go to paying down the debt, and is one of our biggest sources of event revenue. We are still in need of donation items to sell. We welcome handmade craft items, wood crafts, better collectibles, and/or baked goods. If you are crafty and looking for a good cause, you need look no further! We can sell items on a table as one-of-kind items or in the silent auction. For those of you having or making any of these items, please bring them to the church during office hours, Thursday, November 14, or Friday, November 15 between the hours of 9:30 a.m. to noon. You can place donations for the Craft Bazaar in the parish office or in the designated area outside the office. If you can t arrange to bring your items to the church during the selected hours, call Janet Murphy at or Dee Kerr at We can make plans to meet you at the church at your convenience. If you want to go the extra mile or you are not artistically gifted, then you can always volunteer to set up or help out. We also need help organizing and pricing items during the Thursday and Friday drop-off times. We will price the food items the day of the sale on November 16. If you are unable to help with any of the above, please come and support us by having coffee and lunch with us. Thank you in advance to those who are helping us raise money to pay down the debt. 5

6 Musical notes Mark your calendar for a piano concert by Mrs. Linda Kazmarek on Sunday, November 17 at 3:00 p.m. Mrs. Kazmarek is from Baltimore, MD, and is currently the Minister of Music at Halethorpe-Relay UMC. Her duties at the church include providing and playing music for the services, and directing two choirs, among other responsibilities. She has developed a Music Ministry, with specific intentions, which she wrote about on her Web site: Whether I am performing a concert in a church, playing in a retirement community, performing in a Christian bookstore or any other event, I want my audience to hear beauty, sense the love of Jesus, and my love for Him as they listen to the music. As always, concerts are free with refreshments following each performance. We ll see you there! Help Grace Lutheran Church see double! Participate in the Thrivent Choice Double Direction Church Campaign and help our congregation in a big way! During the campaign, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is giving up to $15 million to churches across the country through the Thrivent Choice program. Here s how you can help: Direct available Choice Dollars to Grace Lutheran Church between October 1 and November 30, Thrivent Financial will double all Choice Dollars directions made to churches during this time or until up to $15 million has been awarded, whichever comes first. The Thrivent Choice program allows eligible members of Thrivent Financial to recommend where some of its charitable grant funds go and strengthen the congregations of their choice. To direct Choice Dollars, simply: Go to Thrivent.com/thriventchoice, or Call 800-THRIVENT ( ) and say, "Thrivent Choice." It takes just minutes to do, so make your direction today and help Grace Lutheran Church continue to grow and thrive! 6 What s In the Showcase? The cabinet in the Welcome Center will feature a fall display in November. Take in the beauty of the season and get in the spirit of this time for Thanksgiving, inspired by Janet Murphy and Pat Mummert. These ladies sure do know how to decorate! Thanksgiving is the one holiday focused on gathering together and giving thanks for all we have. Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, is a holiday celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday in November. It has been an annual tradition since 1863, when, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens", to be celebrated on Thursday, November 26. As a federal and popular holiday in the U.S., Thanksgiving is one of the major holidays of the year. Together with Christmas and New Year, Thanksgiving is a part of the broader holiday season. The event that Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in This feast lasted three days, and was attended by about 53 Pilgrims and 90 American Indians. The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating "thanksgivings" days of prayer thanking God for blessings such as military victory or the end of a drought. The first documented thanksgiving feasts in territory currently belonging to the United States were conducted by Spaniards in the 16th century. Thanksgiving services were routine in what was to become the Commonwealth of Virginia as early as 1607 with the first permanent settlement of Jamestown, Virginia, holding a thanksgiving in Americans commonly trace the Thanksgiving holiday to a 1621 celebration at the Plymouth Plantation, where the Plymouth settlers held a harvest feast after a successful growing season. Autumn or early winter feasts continued sporadically in later years, first as an impromptu religious observance, and later as a civil tradition. Taken from: Thanksgiving_(United_States) on October 26, The Thrivent South York Chapter election is Sunday, November 3, 2013 at St. Paul s Lutheran, Hametown between the hours of 1:00 and 3:00 p.m., or at St. Mark s, Hanover from 4:00-6:00 p.m. (same date). There is always pizza, drinks and other treats at each polling place. There is also normally a thank you gift for every person who casts a ballot. If you are a Trivent member, turn out and vote.

7 What on earth is a TOG? It s probably the first question you asked when you heard the youth group s new name. When I asked the group what they wanted TOGS FAQs to be known by, we ended up with a whole dry-erase board full of possibilities, but what they really latched on to was naming themselves after something that they all loved. They came up with two things and married them together, The Hunger Games and God. In the popular book series, those chosen to participate in the Hunger Games are known as Tributes, and so the group decided that they wanted to be known as Tributes of God or TOGS for short. The idea being that no matter who they are or where they come from, they have been chosen by God, to be loved, cared for, and watched over. They have been chosen to participate in the kingdom of God, and they wanted to celebrate that. Who are the TOGS? TOGS are any and all youth in grades Most of our events will be chosen for that entire age range, but on occasion we will do separate events for 7-8 and 9-12 grades, that way each group gets a little bit of one-on-one time. Any and all are welcome at all of our meetings and events. Please bring along friends - the more the merrier. We aren t a youth group without youth! So what exactly are you going to be doing? The goal of the TOGS is to provide a place where the youth can be themselves, to feel a sense of ownership of their church identity, and to just be together to learn about each other and to learn about God. We ll typically hold one meeting a month, depending on frequency of events, and we will aim to have two events a month, one social event and one service event. If you ve peeked inside my office recently you ll have noticed a dry-erase board with the title Stuff To Do. On that board are all the events the youth want to do. Since it has a lot on it already, we ll be plenty busy. We want the youth to feel like this is a place where they have friends, where they have fun, where they are loved, and where they can serve God. What s coming up? We have a ton of stuff coming up, so there s plenty of opportunity for youth to jump right in and get involved: October 31 at 4:30p.m. is Halloween on the Street. The TOGS will be providing entertainment for the children and families who will be coming to Grace for hot dogs during trick-or-treating. We ll have a hay bale maze, a spooky, foggy cemetery, and a haunted house to go through. November 3, 6-7:30 p.m., a TOGS meeting will be held. We ll be setting up events for December and holding a small Bible study, as well as getting things finalized for November events. November 16 at 7:00 p.m. until Sunday morning is our Lock-In, followed by Youth Sunday. Bring friends, games, snacks, movies, all the things you need to have a night of fun. Dinner will be provided. What did I hear about Youth Sundays? Every third Sunday of the month will be Youth Sunday in the Spirit Cellar. TOGS will be reading the lessons, as well as helping with worship in other ways, (hopefully providing skits!), as well as special, What s in the Box? children s sermons. What if I have other questions? Feel free to contact Pastor Tina with any questions you have about the TOGS program! How to submit to the Newsletter We welcome all submissions to the newsletter. 9 THANKS FOR CARING FROM MICHAEL FARRELL First I would like to thank all those who have prayed for me. How could a good guy with 100's of people praying for him, not get better and do it ahead of schedule. This was a time when I could not pray for myself, but you made up for it 10-fold. Thanks. I would also like to thank all of you who did get a chance to visit, and those of you who respected my wishes for no visitors, during my two hospital stays. Thanks also for all the phone calls and cards. So many people showed me how much I am loved. I want to particularly thank Barb Taute for all her driving and care, Pastor Tina for all her visits and passing along to others how I was doing. Thanks also for all those who made food for me and all the others who wanted to. Now that I am doing well and am home, I would love visits. Call first to make sure I am going to be home, because I am still on the go.
