3 Sept. 23, 2018 EYE ON THE PRIZE Year B FROM THE PASTOR S CORNER CON LOS OJOS PUESTOS EN EL PREMIO Año B Today s second reading is part of a letter from James the Apostle to a community of Christians who are living in conflict. James offers advice and counsel by contrasting human wisdom and heavenly wisdom. Human wisdom is limited and intertwined with our tendency to sinfulness; hence we fall into strife, jealousy, immorality, and worse, all resulting from our self-centered desires. Heavenly wisdom, on the other hand, originates with God, so it is pure, peaceable, merciful, and expressed in good deeds. Following heavenly wisdom can lead to the perfect happiness God desires for all of us. None of us even Jesus own disciples are immune to the temptations of this world, such as status, wealth, and power. In today s Gospel, Jesus urgently tells them about his impending suffering and death; yet they ignore him and continue squabbling about who is the greatest among them! We are sometimes like the disciples and the early Christians James is writing to when we indulge in behavior that contradicts who we say we are. When we reproach the pastor, complain about the parish staff or ministries, bicker and gossip, or withhold money or service from our parish, we harm the community of faith. Yet every person in a parish who freely gives their time to a ministry, who regularly prays for fellow parishioners, who brings help and comfort in times of need, who welcomes the poor and forgotten, and who gives generously to the offertory collection, is responding to heavenly wisdom. It is these continuing and cumulative acts of generosity and goodness that build up faith and strengthen the community. To follow Christ is hard work, requiring commitment, perseverance, and courage. Success in the Christian life is achieved by becoming not the greatest, but the servant of all. The prize is life eternal. Algunas veces, cuando nos encaprichamos en comportarnos de una manera que contradice lo que decimos ser, somos como los discípulos y los primeros cristianos sobre los cuales escribe Santiago. Cuando reprochamos al párroco, nos quejamos del personal de la parroquia o de los ministerios; cuando discutimos y chismorreamos, o cuando evitamos dar dinero o un servicio a nuestra parroquia le hacemos daño a la comunidad de fe. Más sin embargo, toda persona que da gratuitamente su tiempo a un ministerio, que ora regularmente por sus compañeros parroquianos, que brinda ayuda y consuelo en los momentos de necesidad, que acoge a los pobres y desamparados, y que da generosamente en la colecta del ofertorio es una persona guiada por la sabiduría divina. Cuando estas acciones generosas y dadivosas son también constantes y acumulativas tienen como resultado una fe más edificante y una comunidad fortalecida. Seguir a Cristo conlleva empeño, requiere compromiso, perseverancia y valor. En la vida cristiana el éxito no se mide por la grandeza, sino por estar al servicio de todos. El premio es la vida eterna. 6 All Souls Catholic Church 23 de septiembre del 2018 NOTICIAS PARROQUIALES CÓMO TRATAMOS AL MENSAJERO No debemos precipitarnos a definir quiénes son los malvados y quiénes (es decir nosotros) son los justos. Tendemos a clasificar rápidamente a los demás como malos, porque solemos considerarnos buenas personas. No nos gusta que una voz profética nos critique con malas noticias sobre nuestro propio comportamiento. No nos gusta que nos reprochen que hemos transgredido la ley ni que nos acusen de no haber actuado acorde a nuestra formación. Puede que condenemos e insultemos a quienes nos enfrentan a estas verdades sobre nosotros mismos, pero si fuéramos realmente buenos, les agradeceríamos por ayudarnos a permanecer en el camino correcto. Los padres de familia, miembros de la familia, profesores, sacerdotes y todos aquellos que trabajan con niños o son responsables del cuidado de niños, necesitan recordar que elevar la voz puede ayudar a proteger no sólo a sus propios hijos, sino a todos los niños. 8 September 23, 2018 All Souls Catholic Church P ARISH N EWS Remembering our Faithful Departed In preparation for All Souls Day, November 2nd, the Parish Environment Committee invites you to write the names of those loved ones that make up our faithful departed to be used as part of our Parish Liturgical Environment. A basket containing colorful paper cut in the shape of FALL LEAFS will be located at the entrance of the church. You are invited to take leafs to write multiple names of loved ones on one side of each leaf. A second basket is available at the entrance of the church from October 4 24 for filled-in leafs. Please write several names per leaf and feel free to decorate as well! Every leaf will allow our parish to recall and pray for those who have gone before us and renew our faith in the promise of eternal life that is made ours by the death and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Also, remember to submit your parish envelopes for All Souls Day as they, too, will be incorporated in our prayer space. En preparación para la celebración del Día de Todas Las Almas, [All Souls Day] 2 de noviembre, el Comité de Ambiente Parroquial los invita a que escriban los nombres de sus familiares que han muerto y que son parte de los difuntos fieles. Los nombres serán parte de nuestro ambiente litúrgico. En la entrada de la iglesia el principio de octubre se encontrara una canasta que contiene papel de varios colores cortado en forma de HOJAS de OTONO. Los invitamos a que tomen unas hojitas y escriban los nombres de sus seres queridos que han fallecido. Si gusta decorar sus hojas agallo. Al llenar sus hojas con los nombres por favor de poner las hojas en la canasta ubicada al entrar a la iglesia durante octubre 4 hasta el 24. En cada hoja por favor de utilizar la hojita para varios nombres de solo un lado. Las hojas nos permitirán orar y recordar a todos quienes se han ido antes de nosotros, y también renueva nuestra fe en la promesa de la vida eterna que se nos ha dado por medio de la muerte y resurrección de nuestro Señor. También, acuérdense de entregar su sobre parroquial para el Día de Todos los Difuntos Fieles que también serán incorporados en el ambiente litúrgico! All Souls Feast Day Festival 2018! You, your family and friends are invited to the All Souls Day Parish Festival on Sunday, November 4, 2018! The festivities will start at 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Our festival this year will feature a variety of delicious foods, live entertainment, boutiques, children s games, and, of course, the opportunity to win extra spending money for the holidays. FESTIVAL RAFFLE ticket books will not be mailed to your home but instead will be made available for pick-up after every Mass on Sunday, Sept. 23rd and Sept. 30th. Individual raffle ticket sales will be starting October 7th after each Mass. This year we encourage all parishioners to NOT stop at buying or selling only 2 books; every increment of 5 books sold or bought by you will entitle you to be entered into a special BO- NUS drawing! Each book of raffle tickets will again contain 10 tickets for the low, low price of $ Raffle tickets will also be available at the Pastoral Center. Everyone s participation is requested and much appreciated!!!
