3 July 22, 2018 FROM THE PASTOR S CORNER 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year "A" - God of the Poor This is a caregiver s story It started in 2003 when I put my life on hold to take care of my mother. I didn't think in a million years that my life will change drastically. But hey!! You only get one mother right? Gorgeous Gwen (nickname) usually bounced back from her health issues, but since 2012 it s been a long journey (diabetes, kidney cancer, major back surgery, kidney removal, gall bladder removal, left leg amputation, right foot toe amputation). It just seems when you knock one out the way here comes another one. The Dollymomma writes I was sitting with my mom, in the final stages of vascular dementia, when suddenly she looked me straight in the eyes and said tenderly, "I love you." I was so touched and replied, "I love you, too." She smirked and asked, "Now, who are you?!" We both laughed. When I told her I was her daughter, Mom got teary and exclaimed, "You are mine?" She was visibly grateful and thrilled. As was I! Momma always used to tell me..."it is one of the most beautiful compensations of life that no one can sincerely try to help another without helping themselves too." Thinking about this really helps me get through the times that I feel discouraged, because I know that through helping her, I'm also making changes in my life and helping myself! - Strawberry4601. Today, God reminds us that caring for others, especially the poor and needy in our midst, is not simply a mandate but the best expression of our love for God. But, there came a time in Israel s history when their quest for power and control of their neighbors led to a sequence of wars which resulted in the neglect of the weak, the poor and the needy in their midst. Whenever the love of power trumps the power of love, the widow and the orphan are always the victim. They are a group that no one likes to identify with, yet, Scripture did not make light of how very dear they are to God s heart hence a refusal to help them is nothing but a sign of Israel s failure in her vocation as the chosen people of God. Since it is the moral responsibility of those who are strong to care for the weak, today, God indicts the leaders of Israel for neglecting the widow and the orphan in their midst. Neglect is a sad thing but unfortunately it is widespread in our society today. Ours is a world where dogs and cats care more than human beings. This human neglect of their fellow beings gets worse when people who claim to be religious see the poor as a problem to be avoided and not as an opportunity to be appreciated. Instead of caring for the poor and the needy, we blame them for all the political and economic problems in the world. Our politics are at their best when it comes to blaming the poor and our desired solution to poverty is eliminating the poor the same way we incarcerate criminals to reduce their number in our cities. In a world ruled by lawyers and technocrats, the poor who have no lobbyist to influence laws and decisions, are always taken for granted. There are many people in the world today who are like sheep without shepherd. We often hear and yet ignore the cry of these fatherless, motherless, poor, homeless and lonely people in our midst. There are families who have no money to care for their children; there are children who in their search for greener pasture have abandoned their aged and sick parents in the hands of care-givers. We are blessed to live in a nation that cares for her own citizens. There are governments who do not care for the welfare of their citizens but would rather provide the poor with enough drugs, abortion and birth control pills to limit their population. We often think that eliminating the poor is the best way of getting rid of poverty, yet, we do know that the poor will always be in our midst. Even when material poverty is taken care of, there is still the problem of psychological, social and spiritual poverty that continues to haunt the people of our time. Our world is filled with people who are only for themselves and this is the value that is daily promoted in our society. Selfishness is presented as a virtue while self-sacrifice and other forms of altruistic behaviors are being regarded as weakness or a form of ignorance. But, in this lies the beauty of our religion; we have within us the power to do the same thing as Jesus our Good Shepherd has done. As children of God, created in the image and likeness of God, we should not hesitate to go an extra mile in helping the widow and the orphan in our midst. Our God is the God of the poor (Ps 68:5-6) and the cry of the poor reaches up to heaven. Caring for others is a sign of strength. People who do not care, do not grow. It is by caring for others that we develop those hidden energies in us which money cannot buy. Caring humanizes us and makes the world a better place for all, especially when we reach out to others who may not be members of our immediate family. Today s readings invite us to care to become good shepherds. God is a Father who cares for all, especially the poor and needy even when they are as stubborn and ignorant as the sheep. In the incarnation, God assumes flesh in Jesus the Good Shepherd to lay down His life for His sheep. We see in Jesus the protection of a father and the compassion of a mother who is ever ready to give her life for her children without counting the cost. Like Jesus, who seeing the people who were helpless and forlorn like sheep without a shepherd felt compassion for them because they were distressed and dispirited (Matt 9:36), coming to the aid of the poor and the needy becomes the most certain prayer that reaches up to God.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a spiritual path in preparation for baptism and a commitment to reflect and partake in Catholic practices. Adults in the R.C.I.A. join in special rites during the Sunday liturgies at various times of the year. In addition, they get acquainted with parishioners by servicing the parish or wider community. In return, the community joins in prayer as the rites are celebrated, hospitality as new members join, and in ministries like sponsor, team member, and dismissal leader. 7 All Souls Catholic Church 22 de julio del 2018 NOTICIAS PARROQUIALES Durante varias semanas hemos escuchado lecturas que relatan la difícil tarea de los profetas y discípulos. En el Evangelio de hoy, el Señor Jesús escucha lo que le cuentan los discípulos enviados de dos en dos a servir a la gente. Jesús, comprendiendo que están fatigados, les dice: Vengan conmigo a un lugar solitario, para que descansen un poco (Marcos 6:31). Quizás esto también es lo que el Señor les dice a sus discípulos del año Debemos hacer un alto en nuestro camino de discípulos y simplemente descansar en el Señor. La Misa del domingo brinda muchas oportunidades para la reflexión, en especial durante los períodos de silencio luego de las lecturas. Por qué no dedicar algo de tiempo hoy a permitir que la palabra salvadora del Señor penetre tu corazón en esos silencios?
